2014 Quicken Loans 400 – NASCAR Inspection Process 2014

McREYNOLDS. WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEK AT THE TOYOTA CAMRY TEST CAR?>>EACH WEEKEND THE FOCUS IS ON THE RACETRACK, BUT THERE’S ALSO A LOT GOING ON BEHIND THE SCENES. LARRY, WHEN YOU WERE A CREW CHIEF, YOU PROBABLY WENT THROUGH TECHNICAL INSPECTION THOUSANDS OF TIMES. IT’S BEEN 14 YEARS SINCE YOU WENT THROUGH THAT INSPECTION. LAST WEEK YOU TOOK OUR TOYOTA CAMRY THROUGH. WERE YOU A LITTLE NERVOUS?>>I’M NOT NERVOUS UNTIL IT COMES TO POST-RACE INSPECTION. THAT’S WHEN I GET A LITTLE BIT UP ON THE EDGE. I STARTED BEING A CREW CHIEF IN 1985. AND TO ME THE EVOLUTION OF THE NASCAR INSPECTION PROCESS HAS BEEN TRULY AMAZING. FOR SO MANY YEARS, THE DECISIONS OF HOW A CAR WAS INSPECTED BY A NASCAR OFFICIAL WAS BASED ON HIS DISCRETION, PLMAINLY USING A MEASURING TAPE. TODAY WHEN YOU GO THROUGH THE PROCESS, NO HUMAN DECISIONS ARE MADE. AND THE TECHNOLOGY THEY ARE USING IS VERY ADVANCED. IN FACT, WHY DON’T YOU TAKE THE TRIP THROUGH INSPECTION WITH OUR TOYOTA CAMRY TEST CAR. NOW, THE FIRST INSPECTION STATION THAT NASCAR PUTS THE CAR THROUGH, THEY SEE HOW THE BODY IS CONFIGURED. NOW, THAT GRID THEY LOWER ON THE CAR, THAT’S WHAT WE CALL THE CLAW. OLD-STYLE TEMPLATES WHEN I WAS A CREW CHIEF, THEY WERE ONE-DIMENSIONAL. TODAY THESE TEMPLATES ARE THREE-DIMENSIONAL. THE SILVER TEMPLATES IS UNIVERSAL TO ALL THREE MANUFACTURERS. THE COLORED ARE SWING-DOWN TEMPLATES. THEY’RE SPECIFIC TO EACH MANUFACTURER. EACH ONE HAS A COLOR ON IT TO INDICATE THE TOLERANCES THAT NASCAR WILL ALLOW. THEY USE A BLOCK THAT HAS FOUR DIFFERENT THICKNESSES. RED WHICH IS .070, BLUE IS A QUARTER INCH AND THE GREEN IS A HALF INCH. AFTER THEY LEAVE THE CLAW, THEY GO ON TO THE NEXT INSPECTION STATION WHERE THEY CHECK THE FRONT END OF THE RACE CAR WITH A FRONT END MODULE. THEY USE THAT SAME INSPECTION BLOCK TO GIVE TOLERANCES ON THE FRONT END MODULE. THIS ALSO CHECKS THE HEIGHT OF THE FRONT SPLITTER AS WELL. NOW, THE NEXT INSPECTION STATION IS WHAT WE CALL THE LASER PLATFORM. THIS IS THE SECOND YEAR IT HAS BEEN USED IN THE SPRINT CUP SERIES. NOW, I KNOW YOU’VE HEARD ME SAY ALL YEAR LONG THERE’S A NO RIDE HEIGHT THROUGH OF 2014, BUT NASCAR THEY HAVE TO HAVE INSPECTION HEIGHTS. THE HEIGHT STICKS MUST BE IN THE GREEN AREA BEFORE THE CAR CAN MOVE ON TO THE LASER PLATFORM. THERE’S ACTUALLY A RADIO FREQUENCY I.D. TAG UNDER THE FUEL CELL AREA. AND THIS TELLS THE COMPUTER WHICH CHASSIS IS COMING ACROSS. THEY INSTALL FRAME REEL PROBES, OUR OF THEM. THESE WHEEL PLATES THAT LOOK LIKE WHITE HUBCAPS, THEY HAVE MACHINE SURFACES. AND THEY ALSO HAVE STEEL PENDULUMS IN THE CENTER. THE LASER PLATFORM HAS 32 DIFFERENT LASERS AND WE’RE MEASURING OVER 30 DIFFERENT THINGS AS FAR AS THE LOCATION. THEY’LL MEASURE THINGS LIKE CAMBER, TREAD WIDTH, TOW, OFFSET AND SKEW. THIS WHOLE PROCESS ONLY TAKES ABOUT 70 TO 80 SECONDS. AND THEN ONCE THE LASERS ARE FINISHED, GREEN IS PASSED. RED IS FAILED.>>OKAY. SO NOW WE’VE GOT OUR CAR THROUGH TECH INSPECTION, AND WE’RE AT MICHIGAN READY TO GO RACING. WE’VE GOT A LOT OF RPM, SPEEDS OVER 250 MILES AN HOUR. WHAT ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT TODAY?>>WELL, I’M REALLY NOT CONCERNED ABOUT ANYTHING ABOUT THAT INSPECTION JUST YET, BUT I DO WANT TO ADD THIS. I WANT TO TRULY THANK RICHARD BUCK AND ALL THE NASCAR OFFICIALS THAT HELPED US WITH THAT PROCESS AND ALL THE PARTS AND PIECES YOU SAW IN THAT INSPECTION PROCESS FOR THE MOST PART, THEY’RE AMERICAN MADE. BUT WHAT I’M CONCERNED ABOUT TODAY GOES ALONG WITH THE SPEED WHICH GOES ALONG WITH RPM. WE’RE SEEING CORNER ENTRANCE SPEED EVEN IN RACE TRIM OVER 210 MILES PER HOUR. AND THE THING ABOUT IT, THEY’RE NOT OFF THE THROTTLE MUCH. THE SPEED DOES NOT GO DOWN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CORNER. SO IWHAT I’M CONCERNED ABOUT HAPPENS TO BE VALVE INC. SUPERS. TOO MANY SUSTAINED RPM WHICH IS WHAT YOU HAVE HERE. YOU CAN TURN THIS GOOD-LOOKING VALVE SPRING INTO WHAT LOOKS LIKE THIS. I THINK THAT’S A REASON THERE WERE A LOT OF THESE BEING CHANGED IN THE GARAGE AREA THIS MORNING.>>LOTS OF SPEED, LOTS O O
