OFFICERS BELIEVED THEY HAD AN IMPAIRED DRIVER ON THEIR HANDS AND CHASED HIM FOR SEVERAL MILES AT SPEEDS NEARLY TWICE THE POSTED LIMITS. THE DRIVER EVENTUALLY CRASHED AND A PASSENGER IN HIS CAR DIED . THERE ARE QUESTIONS ABOUT WHETHER THE OFFICERS SHOULD HAVE PURSUED THE CAR BECAUSE IT WAS NOT INVOLVED IN A FELONY. IT IS THE SUBJECT OF AN INTERNAL REVIEW. IN THESE DOCUMENTS RELEASED ON THURSDAY, WE ARE LEARNING MORE ABOUT WHY THREE OF THE OFFICERS INVOLVED IN THIS CHASE WERE PUNISHED FOR A SIMILAR CHASE IN 2016. IN THAT CASE, OFFICER CHRISTOPHER LEWIS PURSUED A CAR AFTER THE DRIVER SPED OFF DURING A TRAFFIC STOP. THE LIEUTENANT ON DUTY TOLD LEWIS NOT TO PURSUE. ACCORDING TO DOCUMENTS, DESPITE THE ORDER, LEWIS CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THAT VEHICLE AT SPEEDS IN EXCESS OF 95 MILES PER HOUR. HE SOMETIMES DID NOT UTILIZE EMERGENCY LIGHTS AND SIRENS WHICH IS AGAINST POLICY. THEY UNDERSTAND REMEDIAL TRAINING FOR POLICE PURSUIT. IN MARCH OF THIS YEAR, MORALES WAS ALSO SPENT — SUSPENDED A DAY WITHOUT PAY FOR ANOTHER HIGH-SPEED SITUATION. INVESTIGATORS SAID HE ACTED IN AN UNSAFE MANNER AND WAS OBSERVED TRAVELING IN EXCESSIVE SPEED AND ALSO NEGLECTED TO CALL OUT THE STOP. THIS IS A VIOLATION AND HINDERS OFFICER SAFETY.
