Community Calling For Change As Gun Violence Plagues Philadelphia

BREAKING MY HEART. FIND OUT WHY THIS ICONIC SPIRE HAD TO COME DOWN AND WHAT WILL REPLACE IT. WE BEGIN WITH THE COMMUNITY CALLING FOR CHANGE AND INCREASED GUN VIOLENCE PLAGUES PHILADELPHIA. GOOD EVENING, EVERYONE. I’M UKEE WASHINGTON. AND I’M ALEXANDRIA HOFF IN FOR JESSICA KARTALIJA. RESIDENTS AND ELECTED OFFICIALS GATHERED WITH ONE GOAL IN MIND FINDING SOLUTIONS. EYEWITNESS NEWS REPORTER KIMBERLY DAVIS IS ALONG THE PARKWAY WITH MORE OF THE CONCERNS THAT WERE VOICED TONIGHT. KIMBERLY. UKEE AND ALEX, ABOUT 100 RESIDENTS CAME OUT TO TONIGHT’S TOWN HALL. CITY AND STATE OFFICIALS ARE HOPEFUL MEETINGS LIKE THIS WILL BRING ABOUT CHANGE BUT THOSE IN ATTENDANCE SAY MORE NEEDS TO BE DONE. WE’RE SUPPOSED TO BE THE CITY OF BROTHERLY LOVE AND SISTERLY AFFECTION, BUT THEY ARE JUST WORDS. Reporter: TUESDAY EVENING, DOZENS GATHERED TO ADDRESS AN EPIDEMIC CALLED GUN VIOLENCE. IT’S BEEN PLAGUING PHILADELPHIA FOR YEARS NOW, AND RESIDENTS CAME OUT WITH IDEAS THAT COMMUNITY LEADERS WERE EAGER TO HEAR. WE WANT TO HAIR FROM THE COMMUNITY. WE WANT TO HEAR PEOPLE’S IDEAS. WE WANT TO SEE WHERE YOU THINK WE NEED TO BE LEANING IN HARDER. BUT IF YOU TAKE A LOOK AT THE FACES IN THE CROWD, IT’S NOT EXACTLY REFLECTIVE OF THE PEOPLE WHO ARE IN NEED OF HELP, SOMETHING ONE 15 YEAR OLD IN THE CROWD TOOK NOTICE OF. WE NEED THE YOUTH TO COME AND SPEAK, IF WE’RE THE FUTURE THEN WHERE ARE WE AT? IT’S NOBODY HERE BUT MAYBE LIKE TWO OR THREE KIDS AND WHO’S REALLY HERE FOR THE YOUTH? WHO’S REALLY HERE TO SPEAK FOR US. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TOWN HALL MEETING CITY AND STATE OFFICIALS HAVE QUEENED TO FIND A SOLUTION, SO WE ASKED THOSE IN ATTENDANTS IF THIS MEETING WILL ACTUALLY BRING ABOUT CHANGE. JUST ONE TOWN HALL, IT SHOULD BE AN IMPACT MAYBE FOR PEOPLE TO KEEP IT ON THEIR MIND BUT WE NEED TO REALLY ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING THAT’S GOING TO CHANGE WHAT’S GOING ON. THE MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE WHO ARE HERE ARE PART OF THE SOLUTION, ARE WORKING AT IT. BUT THE PEOPLE WHO REALLY NEED TO HEAR IT AREN’T HERE. Reporter: AS THE CITY CONTINUES TO WORK TO FIX THE PROBLEM OF VIOLENCE, RESIDENTS ARE HOPING THAT CHANGE COMES SOONER RATHER THAN LATER. WE NEED TO TAKE THIS MESSAGE OUTSIDE OF THE SAFE CONFINES OF THE BUILDING, TAKE IT OUT INTO THE STREETS AND THE COMMUNITY. Reporter: AS OF YESTERDAY, THERE HAVE BEEN 202 HOMICIDES IN THE CITY THIS YEAR. THAT’S UP FIVE PERCENT FROM THIS TIME LAST YEAR.
