Detroit Free Press writer Drew Sharp passes away

TO ONE OF THE ENTRANCES TO THE BUILDING AND SO FAR NO REPORTS OF INJURIES.>>BERNIE IS HERE FOR WHAT IS A SAD DAY ON DETROIT SPORTS.>>A SURPRISE TO A LOT OF US. WE LOST LONG TIME SPORTS COLUMNIST DREW SHARP.>>ONE OF THE TERRIFIC PEOPLE IN THE WORLD OF SPORTS. A TREMENDOUS SENSE OF HUMOR, ALWAYS A SMILE WHEN YOU SAW HIM IN THE PRESS BOX OR AT A PRACTICE. THIS MORNING HE PASSED AWAY AT THE VERY YOUNG AGE OF 56. STANDING BY AT THE PASSING OF DREW SHARP IS OUR OWN GUY GORDON.>>THAT’S GOING TO BE MISSED HERE AND CERTAINLY AT THE PALACE. A FIXTURE FOR 30 YEARS, THAT UPBEAT PERSONALITY, THE GUY, THEY LIKED TO KIND OF STIR THINGS UP AND STRANDS IN CONTRAST IT THE SOMETIMES CRITICAL PERSONA ON THE PRINTED PAGE. IN MANY WAYS, HE WAS OUR VOICE, THE VOICE OF THE FAN AND FREQUENTLY THE FRUSTRATED FAN.>>FEW WRITERS HAD A SHARPER PEN OR A SHARPER TONGUE. THEY FAILED MISERABLY.>>HE WAS PAID FOR HIS OPINION AND FANS GOT THEIR MONEY’S WORTH.>>ALWAYS HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO LOOK FROM ANOTHER PERSPECTIVE. RATHER THAN THE FREE PRESS.>>FRIENDS AND FAMILY CALLED HIM THE PRINCE OF DARKNESS, DIRECT, UNAPOLOGETIC, USUALLY CONTRARIAN AND SOMETIMES UNPOPULAR.>>HE TRULY DID NOT CARE ABOUT BEING POPULAR. HE DID NOT. AS A MATTER OF FACT, I THINK HE ENJOYED NOT BEING POPULAR. HE WAS FUNNY AND EASY GOING, HAD A GREAT LAUGH AND HE WASN’T ACERBIC AND IT WASN’T–>>I THINK HE LAUGHED.>>DREW SHARP AT THE ASYLUM.>>STAN VANGUNDY SHARED A RADIO STATION WITH HIM AND WARNED WHEN HE GOT TO TOWN THAT DREW HAD SHARP ELBOWS.>>I DIDN’T EXPERIENCE THAT AND I DIDN’T EXPERIENCE THAT AS A SPORTS FAN READING HIS COLUMNS EITHER.>>I’M GOING TO MISS HIM BECAUSE HE’S A GREAT JOURNALIST. I LOVED HIS OPINION.>>HE DID NOT PLAY ORGANIZED SPORTS. HE HAD A DEBILITATING STUTTER. SOMEHOW I MIXED IT ON THE RAY YO.>>SAY GOODBYE TO THEM AND THIS IS THE LAST TIME I GOT TO SAY GOODBYE TO HIM. I’M SORRY.>>INTEGRITY, HONESTY, FEARLESSNESS, A FAIR, ALL QUALITIES THAT WE CERTAINLY VALUE IN THIS BUSINESS ALL WORDS THAT WERE USED TO DESCRIBE DRI SHARP TODAY. AND STAN VANGUNDY SAID HE NEVER MADE IT PERSONAL. IT WAS ALWAYS ABOUT THINGS THAT HAD HAD BEEN DOB NOT THE PERSON DOING THEM AND THAT’S A KEY DISTURNING, BURNY. AS YOU SAID, MAINLY AN UPBEAT FUN GUY AND I WISH EVERYBODY COULD HAVE SEEN THAT SIDE OF HIM. GUY GORDON, LOCAL 4, BACK TO YOU.>>THANK YOU MUCH. HE WAS, HE HAD JUST A TERRIFIC– I DON’T THINK HE TOO HIMSELF VERY SERIOUSLY. HE JUST UNDERSTOOD WHAT HIS ROLE WAS A I MEAN, HE’S REALLY GOING TO BE MIXED.
