Eric Church – Mixed Drinks About Feelings (Behind The Song)

I USED TO DO A LOT MORE
WRITING BY MYSELF. WHEN I FIRST CAME TO TOWN IT WAS IMPORTANT TO
ME ON THIS ALBUM TO AT LEAST TRY TO
DO MORE OF THAT A COUPLE THINGS FOR
THIS ALBUM STAND OUT AT LEAST IN THE
RECORDING PART ONE IS JAY USED A
LITTLE TOY PIANO LOOKED LIKE LITTLE
CHARLIE BROWN PIANO SPLINKY THING (RIGHT) WHAT DOES IT GOT,
TWELVE KEYS, OR? A, YEAH ITS A LITTLE MINIATURE OUT OF TUNE TOY PIANO AND THAT’S WHAT YOU
WERE GOING FOR, THE MINIATURE ATTITUDE. WELL YOU DIDN’T
PARTICULARLY CARE FOR IT. I DIDN’T (LAUGHTER) I GOT OVER IT KINDA LIKE CRAIG KINDA LIKE CRAIG GOT
OVER KICKING HE SNUCK IT BACK IN THERE LATER I HEARD IT I STILL HEAR IT ITS COOL, IT GIVES
IT KIND OF UPRIGHT. I UNDERSTAND WHAT
YOU WERE GOING FOR A LITTLE BIT OF A WARBLE YEP, WHEN YOU SOLO THAT
THING THOUGH ON ITS OWN ITS ON, VERY
INTERESTING. YEAH, YEAH VERY INTERESTING AND THAT WAS JUST WHAT.. THAT WAS UM, FOUR OR
FIVE US RIGHT? SITTING AROUND THAT WAS LIVE MAN IT WAS LIVE, YEAH MAN, THAT WAS, I WASN’T SURE
THAT PIANO PART WAS GOING TO WORK REMEBER WE WERE KINDA LIKE WE TOOK A BREAK OUTSIDE I WAS EXPLAINING IT AND WE CAME IN AND JUST
STARTED BLOWING TOGETHER. WE HAD THE IDEA,
ACTUALLY I GOT TO GIVE MY WIFE SOME HUGE
FAN OF SUSAN TEDESCHI SHE ALWAYS HAS BEEN. I CAN REMEMBER BEING
IN OUR FIRST PLACE WE EVER LIVED TOGETHER,
AN APARTMENT. SHE USED TO LISTEN TO
SUSAN ALL THE TIME. SHE’S A BIG FAN OF
HER VOCAL. AND WHEN CATHERINE FIRST
EVEN HEARD THE SONG SHE SAID THAT SHE WOULD
BE GREAT FOR THAT PART AND I COULD HEAR IT
IN MY HEAD ITS FUNNY WHEN I
SANG IT THAT DAY WE HADN’T EVEN GAVE
IT TO SUSAN YET. AND I WAS TRYING TO SING
THE SECOND VERSE THINKING OF HER IN MIND. AND UH, IT JUST MADE IT REALLY THERE ARE
CERTAIN TIMES THAT A SONG BECOMES A SONG AND IT WAS A SONG
WHEN WE DID IT BUT IT BECAME A SONG WHEN
SHE WAS ON IT (YEAH) AND IT BECAME A MOMENT. AND AGAIN ANOTHER
ONE OF MY FAVORITES THAT WE’VE EVER DONE
IN MY ENTIRE CAREER. AND UM, IT JUST HAS A MOOD AND A HONESTY THAT’S COOL TO ME. ♪ HAVIN’ MIXED DRINKS
ABOUT FEELINGS AND YOU ♪

  • I been a huge fan for many years. There isn't a better artist out there right now. It's awesome seeing these vids where your talking about some of the creative process in putting these songs together. Eric seems to push himself more and more creatively with each album. Everyone is better than the previous IMO. Also one of the few artists that puts a real entire album together. The blending together of the tracks with almost the entire album telling a story. Props to Eric for not following the template now days of just throwing a bunch of possible singles together for radio play and the album just going all over the place in all different directions. His albums are best when listened to from start to finish because of like I said the overarching of the songs setting a certain mood for you while taking you through the stories and emotions. Keep doing your thing, Eric, whatever and wherever it takes you. Because thus far it's taking you straight to Legendary Hall Of Fame status. 🤘🏻🎤🎸

  • Exactly, when I heard this all I could think of was how honest this was!! Married 23 years and gosh I know these nights. ❤️

  • They lyrics confuse me. To me, it makes more sense as "having mixed drinks AND feelings ABOUT you" instead of the other way around. He's having mixed drinks and mixed feelings. Am I not understanding the meaning correctly?

  • "I can tell by the heavy in my heart, I'm going down soon"……just keeps running through my head, for months now. Still evokes the same emotion.

  • Eric Church is such an amazing artist and has my utmost respect the way he approaches his music and tries to connect with fans through his lyrics.

  • Eric church NRA is not involved in the shooting in las Vegas that man shooting his guns was the blame what made him snap an shoot everyone. But you can make a statement like that you need to griw up instead of through shit around

  • Never been a church fan but much respect ✊ for the respect toward my favorite female singer Susan tedeschi it turned out a great song
