Gov. DeSantis Nominates Hispanic Woman To Supreme Court


ISRAEL IN THE PAST FEW DAYS AND WEEKS BUT WE ARE TOLD HE IS NOT COMMENTING. THE SHERIFF DOES HAVE SUPPORTERS. I SPOKE WITH A MEMBER OF THE SHERIFF’S FOUNDATION WHO SAID THEY BELIEVE REMOVING THE SHERIFF WOULD BE PREMATURE AND A MISTAKE AND THAT THE SHERIFF SHOULD HAVE A CHANCE TO WRITE THE SHIFT HERE. MIAMI’S FREEDOM SETS THE SCENE FOR A HISTORIC ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE NEW GOVERNOR. I AM DEEPLY HUMBLED AND HONORED BY THE ANNOUNCEMENT. CUBAN-AMERICAN JUDGE BARBARA LAGOA IS THE FIRST HISPANIC WOMAN TO SERVE ON THE FLORIDA SUPREME COURT. THE JUDGE GREW UP IN HIALEAH. HER APPOINTMENT COMES THE DAY AFTER THE GOVERNOR WAS SWORN IN. THE GOVERNOR SAYS HER CREDENTIALS ARE IMPECCABLE. IT WILL BE MY HONOR AND PRIVILEGE TO ANNOUNCE THAT I’M GOING TO APPOINT JUDGE BARBARA LAGOA TO THE FLORIDA SUPREME COURT. ON HIS FIRST FULL DAY THE GOVERNOR. MIAMI NATIVE BARBARA LAGOA TO FILL ONE OF THREE VACANCIES ON THE FLORIDA SUPREME COURT. I WAS GIVEN 11 NAMES FROM THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE. I HAD ALL 11 CANDIDATES BE INTERVIEWED BY A CADRE OF VERY SOPHISTICATED ATTORNEYS AND I WAS NOT PRESENT FOR THOSE INTERVIEWS BUT THEY REALLY PUT THEM THROUGH THE RINGER AND BRIEFED ME ON THAT PROCESS AND I SUBSEQUENTLY PERSONALLY SAT DOWN 101 WITH EACH OF THE 11 CANDIDATES. BARBARA LAGOA GREW UP IN HIALEAH AND WENT ON TO GRADUATE FROM COLUMBIA SCHOOL OF UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW IN NEW YORK. OVER 50 YEARS AGO MY PARENTS LIKE SO MANY OTHERS CAME TO THE COUNTRY FROM CUBA TO START REBUILDING THEIR LIVES IN A LAND AT THE OFFERED THEM OPPORTUNITY BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY FREEDOM. WITH HER PARENTS BEAMING AT HER SIDE, SHE SAID HER NOMINATION IS EXTREMELY PERSONAL. HER FATHER ABANDONED HIS DREAM OF THE LAW FLEEING CUBA AND SHE INDICATED HER JUDICIAL PHILOSOPHY. I AM MINDFUL OF THE FACT THAT UNDER OUR CONSTITUTIONAL SYSTEM IS FOR THE LEGISLATURE AND NOT THE COURTS TO MAKE THE LAW. FROM THAT STATEMENT IT IS
