How Do We Know We Have Free Will?

Apart from the experience of free will
that we all have, I think that the best theological reason for affirming human
free will is the fact that salvation is not universal. Some people will not be
saved. I think that is as clear as anything in the New Testament
salvation will not be universal. Now given that the New Testament also
teaches that God’s will for salvation is universal, that God wants all people to
be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth, it seems to me that the only thing
that could explain why God’s universal salvific will is not accomplished is
human freedom. Human freedom gets in the way of God’s universal desire of
salvation, and therefore some people freely and irrevocably separate
themselves from God forever. And I think that that is the best explanation for
why universal salvation we’ll not obtain.
