Mars Hydro TS 1000 PAR Testing & LED Grow Light Review


Hey everyone how are you doing me up
Mike here and today we’re looking at the Mars hydro ts 1000 quantum board. Very
impressive right off the bat. I’m gonna say that this is a pretty impressive
light. it’s actually made of 342 SMD LEDs so that is surface mounted device LEDs
it’s a newer technology and it is very efficient. Now we’re going to get into
that a little bit later. But as you can see from the spectrum
here up on the screen it does have a nice peak at about 440 nanometers which
is going to be your blues and you’ll see also add up with 660 nanometers where we
also have these deep red LEDs in there as well which makes up a pretty nice
spectrum not gonna lie. It is a sun-like spectrum so it’s not going to be you
know purple like some of the other lights that you see. It’s going to be
bright like the Sun and it’s gonna have a nice spectrum to it. So the benefits of
using these SMD LEDs are actually pretty awesome because the whole light here is
actually the heat sink. As you can see it’s just this I think like an aluminum
here and basically what it is is it’s using the whole light as the heat sink
it doesn’t get hot enough that isn’t going to need any active cooling. So it’ has no need for any big fans or anything like that on here. I think the hottest part of
this whole entire thing is going to be the individual LEDs. We’re gonna test
that after but it doesn’t really get that hot. You can see that they have done
a pretty smart move here and put a space between the actual heat sink or frame of
the light and the driver. So another cool thing too is that this driver can
actually be removed and used outside of the tent. So you don’t have to have this heat anyway inside the tent with this light which is pretty cool.
Now it does have a dimmer on it as well it’s a little bit difficult to use as you
screwdriver to actually get in there. But if you take off this little
piece here… Sorry I’ve got no fingernails If you take off this plug here at
the top you can stick a screwdriver in there and you can adjust the brightness of your light, so it does have a dimmer which is
pretty cool. For coverage on this light you’re gonna get a 3×3 max
coverage and preferably you’re looking for probably around 2.5 it’s gonna give
you a nice spray at that and we’ll show you that further on on the par map where
you can see where it really kind of drops down near the edges. So let’s get
into the testing once we get the testing done we’ll come back and we’ll recap
and talk about a little bit more. Alright guys so we have done some tests
on our light. So what we’re gonna do now is go over everything that we found out
during this test and I have quite a bit to cover here so bear with me.
Now power consumption was pretty cool now that came in only 147 to 148 watts
which is pretty awesome I’m gonna say. So with the power reading that we have now so we
find out how much they used, it allows us to calculate some of the ppfd per watt so
at 18 inches 3 by 3 that gives us at 147 watts 1.29 ppfd per watt. Now keep in
mind that we’re doing our tests without any sort of reflective mylar walls or
anything like that, we’re just more concerned about what the light is
putting out on our floor. So that is why our numbers are a lot lower than
probably what you see elsewhere. So at that 18 inches the 4 Center results
we took to get the average of that and that brought us into the 470
range. So that would be all right for veg no problem. Now we look over at the 12
inches height by 3 by 3 and we noticed that the ppfd per watt went up a little bit.
that’s 1.51 so that’s that’s pretty impressive.
Now directly under the light the average at 12 inches is 920 umoles so that is
way too close to your plants. If you’re gonna use that like you would need to be
running like co2 and even then they’re probably maybe still a little bit
high. So definitely would want to have them a little bit higher.
For an example I took a couple more readings where I took four readings at
the different heights to get the average. So at 14 inches you were about 788 which is still pretty high. At 15 inches you would’ve
got 704 and at 16 inches you would have got about 630. So probably about 16 to 16
and a half inches is where I would keep my lights, just as a as a rough ballpark
figure. So yeah okay. So now where going move on to the temperature. So the ambient
temperature in our room that we did the test was at 22.9C We had the driver get up to 53 degrees Celsius that turns into 127
Fahrenheit. We also had the top of the heat sink get up to 41 to 42 at
106 degrees Fahrenheit. I believe at the top to probably get a little bit
hotter than that too we did have it running for about two two-and-a-half
hours when did the test, but I have seen some people say that it does get a
little bit hotter. Now one thing that I do have is even where I did my test is air circulation. I think that some people aren’t taking into
consideration that you’re still supposed to have air circulation in with these
with these lights. Just because there’s no active cooling…. if you’re gonna
have it inside of a grow tent you’re probably still going to have circulation
with ventilation going out or fans inside blowing around some air so that’s
something to to consider right? Okay so at the bottom I did get 56 degrees
Celsius and 134 degrees Fahrenheit but then again I still imagine that it’s
going to be higher, this is just like a rough estimate because even though my
quick laser gun is there, I couldn’t see the laser actually on a specific LEDs
it’s just too bright right? So I just went with the hottest temperature I
could find on the bottom so that was once again 56 degrees and 134 degrees
Fahrenheit. So now I just want to talk a little bit
about a couple things about the light. A couple of things that I thought were
just worth to note out. So yeah there’s a couple of
things here that I just wanted to point out with the light.Nnow for this
I’m gonna put up the power map for the twelve inches above the light as it
really helps to show something. Now I wanted to make a point here
because you can see how the fin is reflecting out on the lengthwise of the
light but it’s not on the ends and that’s that’s really unfortunate. It
really shows on the par map too. So we pulled the par map you can see the
inside. The inside … if you actually just pretend this is
par map for a minute on the inside you’re gonna see the inside square. Now
if you look once is 534 and then you got the other corner or the other above
angle it’s 533 and then right on the corner 340. Once again look at all those
inner corners 263 compared to 475 and 414 and and you just keep looking at all
these corners and it’s and is really killing the light so that that is
unfortunate. only would it costs at a couple more
cents, even if that just to give it a little lip on both sides. But
then again this is $189 light. This is a this is a pretty awesome price. So you
can’t really complain about little details like that.
Another thing I was gonna say there’s nothing really to protect the the LEDs. I
know I havet grabbed this light a couple of times and like I’ve hit them with my
fingertips and you know like you do have oil and stuff in your fingers so that’s
not good to get stuff at that on the LEDs or at least what I’ve been told.
anyway so there’s just there’s nothing there to protect it is kind of….. well maybe I’m just worried some maybe that it might cause is just down the
road, but I do get their point because if they did have something
here then maybe the heat wouldn’t dissipate as easy or as quickly
or as quick and maybe it would cause issues down the road but other than that this
is a pretty awesome light and I’m pretty happy with it. So um I do have a
