Miamis Freedom Tower Will Light Up Pink This Weekend The Womens Breast and Heart Initiative is calling on all South Florida residents to wear pink on Sunday to support the cause. “As part of the nationally recognized day, Miami Dade College will illuminate the Freedom Tower in pink,” said local organizers, noting that the prognosis is best when the disease is detected early. Each year, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. “Despite remarkable advances in treatment and a greater focus on prevention, breast cancer remains one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers among American women, and it remains one of the leading causes of cancer related deaths,” said local organizers of the event. “Women whose breast cancer is detected at an early stage have a 93 percent or higher survival rate in the first five years.” The Womens Breast and Heart Initiative is a non profit organization based in South Florida, with a mission to educate women about the importance of breast and heart health through door to door outreach campaigns. “Through the support of the community, donations and volunteerism, the Womens Breast and Heart Initiative reaches an average of 11,000 homes annually,” local organizers said. The South Florida group provides breast and heart health education, access to mammograms and screenings for heart disease in women.
