[ CHEERS AND APPLAUSE ]>>>IT’S GOING TO BE AN AWE
SYSTEM DAY FOR THE FINAL RACE OF THE SEASON.
AND IT’S A PLEASURE TO TURN IT OVER TO THE LEADER OF OUR GROUP.
A COUPLE OF CLASSY GUYS. WE ALWAYS BET WHO WILL HAVE THE
CLASSIEST ATTIRE. YOU WIN THIS WEEK.
ALLEN BESTWICK, AND THE GUYS.>>IT’S AN HONOR TO BE HERE WITH
YOU ON CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAY IN NASCAR.
WHAT A RACE. AND IN THIS CHASE SO FAR, WHAT
KIND OF ACTION DO YOU EXPECT THIS AFTERNOON?
>>WELL, IT’S GOING TO BE DIVVIED UP INTO SECTIONS.
FOUR DRIVERS BATTLING, YOU CAN’T TAKE A CHANCE EARLY IN THE RACE,
UP AROUND THE WALL. YOU CAN’T PUT YOURSELF AND YOUR
TEAM IN THAT POSITION TO MAKE A MISTAKE.
IT’S HOT, GOING TO BE SLICK OUT HERE.
YOU WANT A CAR AFTER 267 LAPS. SO, THE CARS ARE GOING TO BE
CONSERVATIVE. WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN, THE
SPEED IS GOING TO PICK UP. YOU WANT A CAR AND A DRIVER.
>>THIS IS A FAST TRACK. YOU WILL SEE THE GUYS FIGHTING
THE TRACK, CARS OUT OF CONTROL. IT’S GOING TO BE FUN TO WATCH.
AND THEY’RE GOING TO HAVE TO HEDGE THEIR BETS SO THEY HAVE A
CAR CAPABLE OF GETTING TO WHERE THEY’RE GOING TO BE.
>>SUNSET, 5:33 P.M. AND BASED ON WHAT WE’VE SEEN
THROUGHOUT THIS CHASE, AND WITH THE LAST LAP AT PHOENIX LAST
WEEK, WHAT MIGHT WE SEE IN THE FINAL LAPS OF THIS ONE?
>>I THINK WE’LL SEE SOMETHING VERY SIMILAR TO WHAT RYAN NEWMAN
DID LAST WEEK. HE WAS KIND OF OUT OF IT.
NO WAY WAS HE GOING TO BE ABLE TO PASS KYLE LARSON.
BUT HE WILLED THAT CAR PAST THE 42.
I THINK WE’RE GOING TO SEE THE “WANT-TO” FROM THE DRIVERS.
>>AND THE PERFECT TRACK FOR SOMETHING LIKE THAT TO BE TWO OR
THREE WIDE COMING OUT OF TURN FOUR.
THESE DRIVERS ARE WILLING TO DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO HOLD THE
TROPHY. AND IT’S NO-HOLDS BARRED.
>>WATCHING THESE GUYS BUCKLE IN, WATCHING THE CREW CHIEFS
WALK AROUND THE CAR WITH THE FINAL LOOKAROUND.
WHAT ARE THEY GOING THROUGH RIGHT NOW?
>>TRYING TO DEFLECT THE PRESSURE, SMILING.
IT’S A HUGE AMOUNT OF PRESSURE. TALKING TO THE DRIVERS, WITH
THIS FORMAT, THE FIRST TIME EVER.
IT’S HUGE PRESSURE.>>WELL, THE PRESSURE WASN’T
THAT GREAT LEADING UP TO IT, THE PRESSURE IS ON RIGHT NOW, MAKING
THE PIT STOPS, HOW MUCH IT COUNTS.
SEEING THE DRIVERS MAKE MOVES THAT WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN
THEIR WHOLE SEASON. I’VE NEVER EXPERIENCED ANYTHING
LIKE THIS.>>GOING TO BE A FUN
CHAMPIONSHIP-DECIDING RACE. WHO HOLDS THE BIG TROPHY AT THE
END OF 400 MILES. WE’LL FIND OUT WHEN THE ENGINES
FIRE IN SOUTH FLORIDA, NEXT.>>>SPECTACULAR.
82 DEGREE AFTERNOON IN SOUTH FLORIDA, AT THE HOMESTEAD-MIAMI
SPEEDWAY. WHERE THE FORD ECOBOOST 400 IS
ABOUT TO GET UNDER WAY. THE FINAL RACE OF THE SPRINT CUP
SERIES SEASON OF 2014. AND HERE’S THE STARTING LINEUP
FOR TODAY’S RACE, JEFF GORDON IN POLE POSITION.
>>WELL, WHAT A GREAT STORY FOR OUR SPORT.
SO DIFFERENT THAN THE OTHERS. WE TALK ABOUT THE PLAYOFF
SYSTEM. EVERYBODY ELSE IS INVOLVED THAT
COULD BE CHASING TODAY.>>A LOT OF HUNGRY DRIVERS
LOOKING FOR THEIR FIRST WIN.>>JIMMIE JOHNSON, A LOT OF
PEOPLE THOUGHT HE HAD A RACE-CAPABLE WINNING CAR TODAY.
AND MARCOS AMBROSE, MAKING HIS FINAL START IN THE SPRINT CUP
SERIES.>>RYAN NEWMAN, SAYING HE GOT
HALF OF IT IN QUALIFYING, THE OTHER HALF IN THE RACE.
I LIKE THE ATTITUDE. AND THE REST OF THE OTHER 43
STARTERS IN TODAY’S FORD ECOBOOST 400.
>>THEY’VE BEEN HAVING THE NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES FINALE
HERE SINCE 2002. SOME REAL CLASSICS, BEGINNING IN
2004, AND WE EXPECT ANOTHER ONE HERE TODAY.
LET’S GO TRACKSIDE FOR THE COMMAND TO START ENGINES.
>>AND NOW FOR THE MOST FAMOUS WORDS IN MOTOR SPORTS.
PLEASE WELCOME THE GRAND MARSHAL, JOE HENRY!
>>NASCAR FANS, LET’S SAY TOGETHER.
DRIVERS, START YOUR ENGINES! [ CHEERS AND APPLAUSE ]
>>FIRED UP.>>FANS HAVE BEEN FILING IN HERE
SINCE EARLY THE MORNING, FILLING THE GRAND STANDS AT
HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY. NOW, A MOMENT AWAY FROM THE
BEGINNING OF THE 400-MILE JOURNEY THAT WILL DECIDE THE
NASCAR CHAMPIONSHIP. AND OUR IN-CAR REPORTER, DENNY
HAMLIN, LOOKING FOR A BIG SHINY TROPHY TO TAKE HOME WHEN THIS
DAY IS DONE.>>>THE CHASE FOR THE NASCAR
SPRINT CUP. THE FORD ECOBOOST 400 READY TO
BEGIN AT THE HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY IN SOUTH FLORIDA, THE
ENGINES ARE FIRED, THE DRIVERS SITTING ON PIT ROAD.
THE COMMAND IS ABOUT TO BE GIVEN FOR THEM TO ROLL OUT BEFORE THE
GREEN FLAG. I KNOW PAST PERFORMANCE IS NOT
AN INDICATION OF FUTURE RESULTS, BUT DENNY HAMLIN HAS A GOOD
RECORD HERE, WINNER OF TWO OF THE LAST FIVE.
A WIN TODAY WOULD GET HIM THE NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES
CHAMPIONSHIP. LET’S DIAL HIM UP.
>>DO YOU HAVE A COPY?>>10-4.
>>WE APPRECIATE YOU TALKING WITH US.
I KNOW YOU’VE BEEN SAYING ALL WEEK, IT’S A BONUS YOU’RE IN
THIS POSITION. CAN YOU GIVE US YOUR THOUGHTS
AND FEELINGS TODAY?>>THE TEAM HAS GIVEN ME A GREAT
CAR. WE HAVEN’T BEEN THE FASTEST CAR
ALL YEAR, BUT THIS TEAM HAS A LOT OF HEART.
WE SHOWED THAT LAST WEEK BATTLING THROUGH THAT ADVERSITY.
I JUST BELIEVE IT’S OUR DAY.>>WE JUST SHOWED A GRAPHIC, YOU
WON 2 OF THE LAST 5. DO YOU THINK IT WILL TAKE A WIN
TO BE THE CHAMPION AT THE END OF TONIGHT?
>>YEAH, MORE THAN LIKELY. NASCAR WANTED FOUR GUYS TO SHOOT
IT OUT FOR A WIN, AND THAT’S WHAT THEY’RE GOING TO GET TODAY.
>>DENNY, THANKS FOR TALKING TO US.
GOOD LUCK IN YOUR QUEST FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP TODAY.
>>10-4.>>GETTING READY TO GO FROM THE
EIGHTH POSITION ON
THE GRID. AND AGAIN THE RULES, JUST BY WAY
OF A REFRESHER. THE HIGHEST FINISHER OF THE FOUR
DRIVERS TODAY. THAT’S YOUR CHAMPION.
IT’S THAT SIMPLE.>>JUST FIGURE OUT WHERE THE
OTHER THREE ARE. AT THE END OF THE DAY, WITH THE
CHECKERED FLAG, YOU JUST HAVE TO BE IN FRONT OF THEM.
YOU DON’T NEED A CALCULATOR OR ANYTHING.
>>BEFORE THEY SEND THE CARS OUT, WE CHECKED OUT ON PIT ROAD.
HERE’S JAMIE.>>RODNEY, WHAT’S GOING THROUGH
YOUR MIND AS YOU START THE DAY KNOWING THIS IS GOING TO END
UNDER THE LIGHTS?>>I’M JUST THANKFUL TO BE HERE,
WITH ALL THE GUYS. IT’S BEEN A GOOD YEAR FOR US,
AND IT COMES DOWN TO ONE RACE. WE NEED TO GO OUT AND EXECUTE,
AND WHETHER IT’S GOOD OR BAD, WE’RE GOING TO WALK OUT WITH OUR
HEADS HIGH.>>WHAT’S THE KEY TO FINISHING
THIS RACE UP FRONT?>>WELL, YOU HAVE TO KEEP UP
WITH THE RACETRACK A LITTLE BIT. IT’S PROBABLY GOING TO FREE UP
INTO THE NIGHT. SO, HOPEFULLY WE’VE GOT ENOUGH
ADJUSTMENT TODAY.>>AND
KEVIN HARVICK ROLLING
WITH THE OTHER COMPETITORS. IN FIFTH POSITION, PURSUING HIS
FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP. AND WHOEVER WINS THIS TITLE, IT
WILL BE THEIR FIRST SPRINT CUP SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP.
NO ONE HAS DOMINATED MORE THAN JIMMIE JOHNSON, WINNER OF 6 OF
THE LAST 8. NO ONE KNOWS BETTER WHAT THESE
DRIVERS ARE GOING THROUGH. AND HE’S OUR IN-RACE REPORTER
PART TWO.>>JIMMIE, I APPRECIATE YOU
TALKING TO US. WE THOUGHT THERE WOULD BE
NOTHING BETTER THAN TO GET A SIX-TIME WINNER PERSPECTIVE ON
WHAT THESE DRIVERS HAVE TO DO TO WIN THIS TROPHY.
>>I APPRECIATE IT. I WISH I WAS IN THE BATTLE
TODAY. BUT THESE GUYS ARE STRESSED OUT,
TODAY IS A TOUGH DAY. BUT WHOEVER WINS, THEY’VE EARNED
IT. EVERYBODY IS GOING TO ENJOY THE
RACING, AND THANKS TO ALL THE FANS AND THANKS TO ESPN.
HOPEFULLY WE CAN GET THE SMALL TROPHY IN VICTORY LANE TODAY.
>>AND DOING THIS, ARE YOU GOING TO HAVE TO GIVE THE WALL A
LITTLE BIT MORE ROOM LATER IN THE RACE TODAY?
>>WELL, I’VE BEEN OUT HERE RACING FOR CHAMPIONSHIPS, I
DIDN’T WANT TO GET TOO CLOSE TO THE WALL.
IT’S GOING TO BE FASTER DURING THE SUNLIGHT HOURS.
>>THANKS FOR ALL YOU’VE DONE OVER OUR YEARS WITH ESPN, AND
BRINGING GREAT RACING TO US.>>GOT IT.
EVERYBODY HAVE FUN.>>AND JIMMIE JOHNSON, HE HAS
TWO OF THE VISORS. ONE IS CLEAR, ONE FOR SMOKE, FOR
THE CHANGING CONDITIONS.>>NEAT.
ONE OF THE THINGS THE DRIVERS WILL FACE, YOU’LL SEE SOME OF
THE SUN GLARE, FROM OUR HIGH DEFINITION CAMERAS WITH ALL FOUR
CHAMPIONSHIP CONTENDERS. HARVICK, WITH THE OUTBACK
STEAKHOUSE, AND RYAN NEWMAN WITH THE QUICKEN LOANS CAMERA.
AND JIMMIE JOHNSON WITH THE SUNOCO ON BOARD TODAY.
AND THE DRIVERS ARE OUT ON THE RACETRACK.
>>JOEY, SHOW US WHAT YOU’VE GOT TODAY.
LOOKING FOR A CHAMPIONSHIP HERE, FIVE WINS, JUST CAPPING IT OFF
TODAY, SMOOTH, SAFE, WE’LL BE THERE AT THE END.
GOOD LUCK.>>THANK YOU, SIR.
BEEN A HECK OF AN OPPORTUNITY SO FAR.
>>CAPTAIN ROGER PENSKE, COULD BE A THIRD RACING CHAMPIONSHIP
IF JOEY LOGANO WINS TODAY. AND DENNY HAMLIN’S RADIO TRAFFIC
BUZZING A LITTLE BIT ALSO.>>IT’S ALL ABOUT EXECUTION.
THE WORST WE CAN BE IS FOURTH, THE BEST WE CAN DO IS BRING HOME
A BIG, SHINY PIECE OF SILVER. SO, GOOD LUCK.
>>AND THE CREW CHIEF, HE WON BACK IN 2004.
>>WHAT A SPECTACULAR SIGHT THIS HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY IS.
AND OUR AERIAL VIEW SPONSORED BY GOODYEAR, THE OFFICIAL TIRE OF
NASCAR. WHAT A SIGHT.
SO, KEVIN HARVICK, THE HIGHEST-QUALIFIED OF THE
CHAMPIONSHIP DRIVERS, STARTING FIFTH.
>>LAST ONE OF THE YEAR. LET’S HAVE FUN TODAY.
JUST ANOTHER RACE, SAME THING WE’VE BEEN DOING ALL YEAR.
>>RODNEY CHILDERS, THE SOOTHING VOICE IN THE EAR OF KEVIN.
>>WELL, THERE’S A LOT OF STRESS OUT THERE.
>>YOU’RE TRYING TO KEEP YOURSELF CALM BY SAYING THAT.
>>YEAH, A LOT OF PRESSURE.>>AND PAUL MENARD AND MARCOS
HAVE TO START AT THE TAIL OF THE FIELD BECAUSE OF UNAPPROVED
ADJUSTMENTS. AND 267 LAPS, SUNSET, 5:33
EASTERN TIME. TWO HOURS FROM NOW, THE FINAL
THIRD OF THE RACE WILL BE RUN UNDER THE LIGHTS AFTER SUNSET.
JEFF GORDON HAS CHOSEN THE OUTSIDE LANE.
THE FINAL RACE OF THE SEASON, AND THE CHAMPIONSHIP ON THE LINE
IN THE FORD ECOBOOST 400 IN HOMESTEAD, FLORIDA.
WE’RE UNDER WAY.>>A LITTLE SLIP BY KESELOWSKI.
HARVICK WOULD REALLY LIKE TO GET INTO A SITUATION WHERE HE’S NOT
LOOKING AT TWO CARS SIDE-BY-SIDE IN FRONT OF HIM.
HE WANTS TO GET AHEAD OF BRAD RIGHT NOW.
>>KURT BUSCH, STRUGGLING ON THE SIDE OF THE RACETRACK.
HARVICK GOES BY HIM INTO THIRD PLACE.
KAHNE, NEWMAN, FOR 17th AND 18th.
>>I DON’T EXPECT TO SEE NEWMAN AND HIS TEAM DO ANYTHING
DIFFERENT THAN WHAT THEY’VE DONE ALL YEAR.
JUST WAIT IT OUT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.
>>AND THAT’S THEIR WHOLE DEAL, WE’RE NOT DOING ANYTHING
DIFFERENT. WE’RE NOT GOING TO CHANGE WHAT
WE’RE DOING TODAY. WHAT WE’VE DONE HAS GOTTEN US TO
THIS POINT.>>TO SECOND PLACE GOES KEVIN
HARVICK. HE LEADS A LOT OF LAPS AND HAS A
FAST RACE CAR.>>SEEMS LIKE EVERY WEEK, HE’S
THE STANDARD FOR SPEED. THEY’RE ABLE TO EXECUTE, AND
FINISH OFF SOME STRONG RUNS.>>AND THERE’S NO URGENCY FOR
HARVICK TO GO UP AND GET THE LEAD.
NO BONUS POINTS FOR LEADING LAPS OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT FOR THE
CONTENDERS.>>JIMMIE JOHNSON ON THE MOVE.
HE HAS A STRONG CAR FROM THE PRACTICES ON SATURDAY.
LOGANO, IN NINTH. ALL RACE LONG, YOU’LL SEE THE
THIRD LINE OF DATA. IT WILL TELL YOU WHERE THE FOUR
CONTENDERS ARE. IF YOU GET UP AND COME BACK,
YOU’LL HAVE THE PICTURE RIGHT AWAY.
>>I THINK WE’RE SEEING WHERE HARVICK IS RIGHT NOW.
HE’S GIVING HAMLIN PLENTY OF RESPECT.
>>AND NOW, THEY’RE STARTING TO MIGRATE, ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP.
>>IF YOU GET UP TO GO TO THE FRIDGE FOR A SNACK, BRING ME
SOMETHING.>>BOWYER, HE HAD A GOOD CAR ALL
WEEKEND. PROBABLY THE FASTEST I’VE SEEN
THE 15 CAR GO.>>IT’S BEEN A LONG DRY SPELL
FOR CLINT BOWYER. LAST WIN WAS IN OCTOBER OF 2012,
A COUPLE OF YEARS NOW FOR HIM. AND THERE’S SOMETHING TO, YOU
HEAR DRIVERS SAY IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
THERE’S SOMETHING TO THE FINAL RACE OF THE YEAR, THE FOCUS IS
ON THE CHAMPIONSHIP STAGE. UNLESS YOU WIN THE RACE AND THE
CHAMPIONSHIP, NO ONE REMEMBERS WHO WON.
BUT THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT CARRYING THE WINNER’S SWAG FOR A
FEW MONTHS UNTIL DAYTONA.>>EVEN IF IT’S OVERSHADOWED BY
SOMEONE ELSE WINNING THE CHAMPIONSHIP.
>>LOGANO JUST PASSING TRUEX JR. FOR EIGHTH PLACE.
TRYING TO MOVE CLOSER TO THE FRONT.
WE’RE JUST UNDER WAY HERE AT HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY.
>>>CAUTION, DEBRIS ON THE RACETRACK.
EVERYBODY IS ON PIT ROAD.>>HARVICK, GOING TO MAKE AN
ADJUSTMENT AND FOUR TIRES.>>LOGANO, SAYING IT’S A LITTLE
TIGHTER. FOUR TIRES.
>>AND YOU SEE THE STRATEGY PLAY BY KURT BUSCH’S TEAM AS WELL AS
TONY STEWART’S TO PICK UP POSITION.
NOW, THE YELLOW FLAG IS OUT FOR A CABLE THAT IS HANGING OUT FROM
THE CATCH FENCE AND COMES OUT TOWARDS THE GRAND STAND.
NOT SURE WHAT IT’S FOR, BUT WE’LL FIGURE IT OUT.
SEE SOME OF THE TECHNICIANS DOWN THERE WORKING ON THAT NOW.
SO, FIRST YELLOW FLAG IN THIS ONE.
KURT BUSCH WILL TAKE OVER THE RACE LEAD ONCE THE 32 CAR CYCLES
THROUGH TO PIT ROAD. THEY’VE STAYED OUT AND TAKEN THE
LEAD UNDER THE CAUTION FLAG. FORD ECOBOOST 400, UNDER ITS
FIRST YELLOW. HERE AT HOMESTEAD-MIAMI
SPEEDWAY, YOU CAN GO ONLINE TO NASCAR.COM/RACEBUDDY TO FIND TEN
RACE VIEWS AND ALL THE CHAT ROOMS YOU’LL FIND THERE.
NICE MOVE, KURT BUSCH CHOOSES THE OUTSIDE LANE.
>>AND IT’S REALLY SLICK AND HOT, YOU NEED ALL THE GRIP YOU
CAN GET.>>THAT WILL BE A GOOD
EXPERIMENT FOR HIS TEAMMATE, KEVIN HARVICK, TO SEE HOW IT MAY
WORK.>>SOMEBODY HAS TO TRY IT.
>>WELL, WITH JUST ABOUT TEN LAPS ON THE TRACK YESTERDAY,
SEEMED LIKE IT WORKED PRETTY WELL.
>>I THOUGHT WE MAY SEE A LOT MORE OF IT.
AND THE GREEN FLAG RESTART IS PRESENTED BY DIET MOUNTAIN DEW.
WHAT A RUN FOR KEVIN HARVICK THROUGH ONE AND TWO.
>>STRONG. WENT ALL THE WAY AROUND JEFF
GORDON AND GONE.>>DENNY HAMLIN ON KURT BUSCH TO
PICK UP THIRD PLACE. HAMLIN, IN THE 11, AND MATT
KENSETH. THAT CAR CHANGED JUST THE RIGHT
TIRES ON THE PIT STOP. JOEY LOGANO, LOOKING ON KURT
BUSCH TO SEE IF HE CAN FIND A SPOT.
JEFF GORDON HUNTS, TO THE LOW SIDE OF KEVIN HARVICK.
JOEY, UP TO SIXTH PLACE. HAMLIN, THIRD.
HARVICK LEADING. NEWMAN, 16.
>>NEWMAN, RAN IN ON SOME GUYS — TRYING TO PASS, KYLE
LARSON, AND KASEY KAHNE, HAD TO GIVE IT SOME THROTTLE.
>>GORDON, LOOKING LOW.>>THEY HAVE TO LOOK BACK, KEVIN
TRYING TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP HERE, THAT LOOKS LIKE A STAPLE
OF WINNING THIS RACE. REALLY HAS BEEN A FANTASTIC YEAR
FOR GORDON AND HIS TEAM. JUST PERFORMED AT SUCH A HIGH
LEVEL EACH AND EVERY WEEK. YOU CAN BLAME A LOT OF THINGS.
HE WAS IN A GREAT POSITION TO WIN IN TEXAS IN A LATE RACE
CAUTION, AND THINGS THAT HAPPENED FROM THAT POINT.
AND NOT CHANGING THE LEFT SIDE TIRES FIRST MAY HAVE COST THEM
THAT OPPORTUNITY.>>WELL, TWO SECOND-PLACE
FINISHES IN THE LAST ROUND. STILL DON’T MAKE IT.
AND SIX TOP TEN FINISHES IN THE LAST TEN RACES.
THAT SHOWS YOU HOW STRONG THIS CAR HAS BEEN.
>>AND THAT’S THE OUTCOME AT PHOENIX, HE GOT THE WORD HE WAS
OUT. THAT HIT HIM HARD.
HE SAID EVEN IF HE WINS HERE, THAT WOULD MAKE IT HURT EVEN
MORE. AND TALKING WITH HIS CREW CHIEF
YESTERDAY, HE SAID, NOW WE HAVE TO START ALL OVER AGAIN.
AND WE KNOW HOW HARD IT IS JUST TO GET IN THE CHASE, LET ALONE
GET IN POSITION TO WIN THE CHASE.
AND NOW YOU HAVE TO START FROM SCRATCH IN FEBRUARY.
>>THIS YEAR TOOK SO MUCH OUT OF HIM.
SO MUCH INTENSITY.>>AND THEY CERTAINLY, WHEN
GORDON, THEY’LL TELL YOU, WE HAD A CHAMPIONSHIP PERFORMANCE THIS
YEAR. AND THE NUMBERS TELL YOU, YEAH,
THEY DID.>>AND LOOKING TO NEXT YEAR,
COMING INTO THIS YEAR, NOT KNOWING HOW THIS WOULD PLAY OUT.
AND THE THINGS THAT THEY WOULD EXPERIENCE, AND THE AMOUNT OF
PRESSURE THERE IS TO PERFORM. IT’S GOING TO BE DIFFICULT TO
GET THROUGH IT AND BE A PART OF THE FOUR NEXT YEAR.
>>BIG RUN BY LOGANO, TRYING TO CATCH MATT KENSETH FOR FOURTH
PLACE. AND JOEY IS THROUGH.
>>I KNOW IT’S EARLY, BUT THIS IS HOW I THOUGHT THIS
CHAMPIONSHIP-DECIDING RACE MAY PLAY OUT.
THREE OF THE FOUR IN THE TOP FOUR SPOTS.
RIGHT NOW, KEVIN HARVICK IS IN THE TOP SPOT, BUT WE’RE NOT EVEN
50 MILES INTO THE RACE IN SOUTH FLORIDA.
>>>THE TROPHY, AND THE FOUR DRIVERS COMPETING FOR IT WITHIN
THE FIELD OF 43 TODAY. AT THE HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY,
ON A SUNNY NOVEMBER AFTERNOON. AND THE RUNNING, SECOND, THIRD,
FOURTH, AND 13th, HARVICK LOSING THE LEAD TO JEFF GORDON JUST A
MOMENT AGO. AND WE’LL SHOW YOU HOW RIGHT
HERE.>>PRETTY SIMPLE.
WE SPOKE EARLIER ABOUT THE FOUR DRIVERS NOT TAKING CHANCES EARLY
IN THE RACE. HARVICK, MOVING UP, A COUPLE OF
BIG RUNS, SAW IT HAPPENING, LET IT GO.
>>WELL, THAT HIGH LINE THAT GORDON IS TAKING.
>>AND ALL THE SCUFF MARKS ON THE WALL, THAT’S THE RISK PART.
>>WELL, IF THAT’S WHERE THEY NEED TO BE AT THE END OF THE
RACE, THAT’S WHERE THEY’LL BE.>>AND HERE’S HARVICK MOVING UP
A LITTLE BIT. JAMIE?
>>WELL, USUALLY WE SEE THE 4 AS A RIM RIDER.
HE LIKES TO RUN UP NEAR THE WALL.
BUT I WAS TOLD, THEY THOUGHT IT WAS KEVIN JUST BEING
CONSERVATIVE TO GET ALL HE CAN OUT OF THE CAR.
RIGHT NOW, HE’S A LITTLE LOOSE.>>AND BEHIND HIM, THE 11 CAR,
DENNY HAMLIN, LOOKING AT A REDEMPTION YEAR AFTER 2010.
>>IT’S NOT BAD. DO HAVE SOME SMOKE COMING FROM
THE OIL TANK.>>THEY’RE NOT VERY CONCERNED
ABOUT IT, BECAUSE YOU CAN GET A LITTLE OIL ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE
TANK, IT CAN BURN UP. AND HAMLIN, JUST BIDING HIS
TIME.>>AND YOU KNOW THE VALUE OF A
GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP. WELL, TODD GORDON SAID HE GOT
IT, BECAUSE HE SCHEDULED ONE MORE MEETING WITH HIS CREW YET.
JOEY LOGANO SAID HE SLEPT LIKE A LOG, WHEN HE FELL ASLEEP
FINALLY. THEY’RE ADJUSTING THE CAR AFTER
BEING TIGHT EARLIER.>>GORDON, WITH A 2.5-SECOND
LEAD OVER HARVICK. NEWMAN, MOVING UP TO THE 12th
SPOT. OTHERS MOVING UP AND DROPPING
BACK. EARNHARDT JR., UP TO FIFTH.
HARVICK, TO SIXTH AFTER THE RESTART.
KASEY KAHNE MOVING UP INTO THE TOP TEN GROUP.
>>A COUPLE OF DRIVERS WE TALKED ABOUT, TOOK TWO TIRES.
KURT BUSCH AND TONY STEWART. BUSCH, TO 14th.
STEWART, RESTARTED AT 8th, ALL THE WAY BACK TO 29th.
SO, NOT TOO GOOD. JUST DON’T SEE IT WITH THESE
CARS. IT MAY BE SOMETHING THAT WILL
WORK BETTER TONIGHT WHENEVER THE TRACK HAS A LITTLE BIT MORE
GRIP.>>WELL, THAT’S THE BEST
POSSIBLE SCENARIO TO MAKE IT WORK, AND IT’S NOT WORKING.
>>MAKING JUST THE TWO-TIRE STOP ISN’T THE ONLY PROBLEM.
YOU HAVE A STORY?>>WELL, KURT SAYING HE’S GOT A
FAIRLY SIGNIFICANT VIBRATION. HE MAY NEED A BUNGIE CORD ON IT
AT THE NEXT STOP.>>AND WE’VE SEEN THAT A COUPLE
OF TIMES IN THIS LATE SUMMER AND FALL.
HERE WE GO FOR SECOND PLACE. DENNY HAMLIN, STARTING TO WORK
OVER KEVIN HARVICK. THE 11 CAR’S SPEED.
DENNY TALKED ABOUT IT. OTHER PEOPLE IN THE GARAGE
COMPARING THE LAP TIMES OF EVERY CAR IN PRACTICE.
THEY SAY THE 11 CAR SPEED IS LAP WINNING SPEED.
AND LOGANO –>>HE’S SMOOTH.
I THINK I WOULD HAVE SAVED THAT UNTIL THE LAST LAP.
THAT’S PRETTY STRONG RIGHT WILL THERE.
AND THE 11 CAR, HE SAID, THE MOST SPEED I’VE HAD ON MY CAR,
WE’RE JUST GETTING THERE. I’M SO EXCITED, HE SAID IF I CAN
GET THROUGH PHOENIX, I WILL HAVE A GREAT SHOT TO WIN AT
HOMESTEAD.>>AND PEOPLE MAKING
ADJUSTMENTS, HOW ABOUT THE ADJUSTMENTS ON THE SIDE OF THAT
22?>>THAT’S EITHER A STRONG TIRE
CHANGER OR CARRIER TO MOVE IT THAT MUCH.
BUT HE’S GOT EXTRA DOWN FORCE AND IT’S SHOWING.
>>WELL, DENNY HAMLIN, JUST ABOUT AS FAR OUT.
>>HAMLIN, RIGHT THERE ON HARVICK’S QUARTER PANEL.
A LITTLE LOOSE TRYING TO GO FROM THE BOTTOM THERE.
>>MAKING DENNY A LITTLE NERVOUS FOR A SPLIT SECOND.
>>I WAS THINKING DENNY, I DON’T KNOW IF NERVOUS WOULD DESCRIBE
WHAT HE DOES. MAYBE AGITATE?
>>WHY NOT?>>THIS IS FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP.
>>THAT’S RIGHT.>>HE’S NOT OUT THERE TO BECOME
BEST FRIENDS TODAY, FOR SURE.>>26-LAP GREEN FLAG RUN UNDER
WAY. JEFF GORDON WITH A BIG LEAD.
>>>FORD ECOBOOST 400, HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY, THE
RACE FOR THIRD PLACE, WHICH MEANS FOR TWO OF THE CONTENDERS,
HAMLIN POKING A NOSE INTO HARVICK’S SPACE, BUT NOT PAST
HIM. AND LOGANO SECOND, AND JEFF
GORDON IN FIRST.>>AND NEWMAN, WORKING HIS WAY
UP CLOSE TO THE TOP TEN. IN 11th RIGHT NOW.
>>PICKING THEM OFF, ONE AT A TIME.
SINCE THE RESTART, NEWMAN HAS GAINED SIX POSITIONS.
THE RESTART COMING IN LAP 15. AND THEY’RE GETTING THERE.
LITTLE BITS AT A TIME.>>THAT’S BEEN THE FOCUS OF
THEIR WEEKEND. THEY WEREN’T SO FOCUSED ON BEING
FAST, BUT WORKING THE DIFFERENT LINES MAKING SURE IT’S
COMFORTABLE FOR HIM. AND THE CAR, A LITTLE BIT TIGHT
RIGHT NOW, AND GETTING TIGHTER. RYAN SAYS, ESPECIALLY THE FIRST
TWO-THIRDS OF THE CORNER. BUT THEY’VE BEEN PLEASED WITH IT
FOR THE FIRST 48 LAPS.>>AND THAT’S GOOD, THEY SHOULD
BE PLEASED WITH IT. SO, JEFF GORDON, LEADING JOEY
LOGANO BY NEARLY THREE SECONDS. AND I KNOW IT LOOKS, WHEN YOU
HAVE THAT HEAD-ON CAMERA SHOT, KIND OF UNUSUAL COMING AT YOU,
BUT THESE HAVE BEEN GOING ON THE LAST FEW MONTHS.
HERE’S HOW IT HAPPENS.>>YOU SEE THE CREWS PULLING IT
OUT ON THE RIGHT SIDE. HERE, YOU SEE THE TIRE CARRIER
IS GOING TO PULL IT OUT. THAT BRINGS A LOT OF DOWN FORCE
TO THE LEFT SIDE.>>SOMETHING BREAKS DOWN, I WANT
THAT MAN ON MY SIDE.>>HE’S A STRONG BOY, HUH?
>>YEAH.>>AND NASCAR IS AWARE THIS IS
GOING ON. BUT AS IT DEVELOPED OVER TIME,
THEY GOT THEMSELVES IN THE SITUATION WHERE, WE’RE IN THE
MIDDLE OF THE CHASE. DO WE MAKE A RULE CHANGE NOW?
THE ANSWER IS NO. YOU CAN’T CHANGE WHAT HAPPENS IN
THE MIDDLE OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP. IT’S GOTTEN TO THIS POINT, AND I
EXPECT THEY’LL DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT BEFORE THE START OF
NEXT SEASON, THOUGH.>>AND YOU SEE LOGANO, HE’S
SAYING, OH, I BETTER GET MINE OUT A LITTLE BIT FARTHER.
GETTING COMPETITIVE.>>AND AMBROSE, WITH A LITTLE
SLIDE ON TURN FOUR. HE SAVED IT.
HAMLIN, NOT ABLE TO GO AROUND HARVICK INTO THIRD POSITION.
>>HE’S MADE A COUPLE OF RUNS AROUND IT.
I DON’T KNOW IF HE’S JUST TESTING IT, AND LETTING HARVICK
KNOW, I’M HERE, AND I HAVE A FAST CAR HERE, TOO.
AND HE’S UP THERE PRETTY FAR. YOU DON’T WANT TO PUT YOURSELF
IN A POSITION THAT WILL COST YOU.
YOU CAN’T WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP RIGHT NOW, BUT YOU COULD LOSE
IT.>>A LOT OF RADIO TRAFFIC ON THE
NASCAR RACE CONTROL CHANNEL. VARIOUS TEAMS REPORTING DEBRIS.
A LOT OF THEM REPORTING ARE TEAMS ABOUT TO BE LAPPED.
HOW ABOUT THAT?>>>A REMINDER, AFTER WE CROWN
THE SPRINT CUP CHAMPION, THERE ARE THE NHRA AUTO CLUB FINALS,
TONIGHT AT 7:30 P.M. AND BRETT MOFFITT, IN THE 66,
THE YELLOW, LIKELY A BAD BREAK FOR BRAD KESELOWSKI.
HE HAD JUST GONE ON TO THE PIT ROAD BEFORE THE YELLOW.
>>THAT CAN GET YOU, WHENEVER YOU’RE DOING THAT.
>>THEY’LL PUT HIM BACK ON THE LEAD LAP, BUT HE DOES LOSE WHAT
HE WAS TRYING TO GAMBLE TO GET.>>SO, SECOND YELLOW FLAG IN THE
RACE. STILL SHY OF THE 100-MILE MARK.
MATT KENSETH HAD FALLEN BACK TO THE NINTH PLACE.
>>JUST TRYING TO BE PATIENT AROUND THOSE GUYS.
>>10-4, 10-4. DOING A REALLY GOOD JOB.
>>SO, THIRD-PLACE DENNY HAMLIN THERE.
GREG BIFFLE SHOULD GET THE THREE PASS AFTER THIS ONE.
AND PIT ROAD OPEN NOW. JAMIE?
>>WELL, KEVIN HARVICK SAYING HE’S REALLY, REALLY LOOSE.
THEY’RE GOING BACK, FOUR TIRES, ALREADY MADE THE AIR PRESSURE
ADJUSTMENT.>>AND LOGANO, HIS CAR WAS
LOSING HIS FRONT TURN. AIR PRESSURE, FOUR TIRES.
>>HAMLIN, CHASSIS ADJUSTMENT, FOUR TIRES.
>>AND NEWMAN, FOUR TIRES, UP ON THE TRACK BAR, AND SUNOCO FUEL
FOR RYAN.>>A LITTLE TRACK POSITION
CHANGE THERE. BUT JEFF GORDON HOLDS THE LEAD
ON THE SECOND ROUND OF PIT STOPS AT THE FORD ECOBOOST 400.
>>>COLLEGE BASKETBALL IS UNDER WAY.
MICHIGAN STATE AND DUKE, FOLLOWED BY KANSAS AND KENTUCKY,
STARTING AT 7:00 P.M. ON ESPN AND WATCH ESPN.
THE HOME COURT OF COLLEGE HOOPS. KENTUCKY HAD TO HAVE A SECOND
HALF RALLY TO GET BY BUFFALO TODAY.
>>AND DUKE HASN’T LOST BY LESS THAN 50 YET.
>>AND YOU SEE HAMLIN TO THE INSIDE, LOGANO AND HARVICK.
>>THEY’RE PROBABLY WAITING UNTIL THE END TO RACE REALLY
HARD, RIGHT?>>YOU THINK SO.
>>OH!>>COULD COST HIM.
SO, JEFF GORDON STARTED AS THE LEADER, BUT LOGANO IN TURN TWO,
THEN HAMLIN, THE RACE LEADER OFF TURN FOUR.
>>HE’S THINKING, WHAT DID I GET MYSELF INTO, WITH THESE GUYS,
RACING FOR A CHAMPIONSHIP? RACING HARD.
>>IF HE HASN’T FIGURED IT OUT YET —
>>RIGHT IN THE HORNET’S NEST.>>NEWMAN MADE A NICE MOVE ON
THE RESTART ALSO, GETTING HIMSELF SITUATED OUT THERE.
INSIDE THE TOP TEN NOW.>>HARVICK, WITH A LITTLE BUMP
TO LOGANO, SAYING, I’M HERE! IS THAT LIKE THE NUDGE HE GAVE
HIM IN THE PRESS CONFERENCE THE OTHER DAY?
AND JEFF GORDON, REESTABLISHING HIMSELF IN THE NUMBER ONE SPOT.
>>LOGANO TRYING TO GET HIMSELF SITUATED IN WHAT WOULD BE THE
CHAMPIONSHIP SPOT AT THIS POINT.>>AND LOOK AT HARVICK.
CAN HE TAKE THAT ON OFF THE CORNER?
>>YEAH. A LOT OF TIMES YOU GET THAT RUN,
AND YOU HAVE TO LIFT A LITTLE BIT, LIKE LOGANO DID ON THE
RESTART.>>LOGANO, HIS STRONG POINT
SEEMS TO BE GETTING DOWN IN THE CORNER.
BACKING IN REALLY DEEP.>>HAMLIN, CHALLENGED BY JIMMIE
JOHNSON FOR FOURTH PLACE. AND HARVICK, CHALLENGED BY
LOGANO, INTO SECOND. YOU SEE DENNY RUNNING ALL THE
WAY UP BY THE WALL. LOOKING AROUND THE RIGHT REAR
FENDER WELL, YOU WILL SEE SOME OF THE BLACK PAINT SCUFFED AWAY.
>>I DON’T THINK HE’S HIT IT THIS RUN YET.
I THINK IT WAS BEFORE THE LAST PIT STOP.
>>GOT A REAL LIGHT RUB ON THE LEFT TIRE.
>>10-4.>>NOW, DENNY, GOING TO HUNT THE
BOTTOM GROOVE A BIT, AS HE’S FALLEN BACK TO FIFTH PLACE.
SO, IT SETTLES OUT AS GORDON, HARVICK, LOGANO, JOHNSON,
HAMLIN, AND NEWMAN IN EIGHTH. PICKING UP FOUR SPOTS.
WHAT A MOVE BY LOGANO, LISTEN.>>YOU’RE GOOD.
GET BY ONE OUT BACK. CLEAR FOR THE MIDDLE, CLEAR TO
THE TOP. GOOD BY TWO, ALL THE WAY UP.
GOOD. ALL GOOD.
24 IS BEHIND YOU. YOU HAVE A GUY TRYING TO GET TO
THE BOTTOM, CLEARED FOR THE BOTTOM.
CLEAR EVERYWHERE.>>ONE THING, FROM THAT, HE’LL
BE ABLE TO LEARN FROM, WHAT DOES HE NEED TO BE ABLE TO PULL THAT
OFF ALL THE WAY? UP TO THAT POINT, HE HAD MADE A
GOOD, STRONG MOVE.>>WELL, HE DIDN’T HAVE A GOOD
ANGLE. WASN’T ABLE TO GET A NICE ARC.
HE’LL PROBABLY LEARN FROM THAT, IF HE GETS IN THAT POSITION
AGAIN.>>HAMLIN, LOGANO FOR FOURTH AND
FIFTH PLACE. WHILE THESE GUYS ARE RACING BACK
AND FORTH FOR THIS SPOT, RYAN NEWMAN IS CONTINUING TO PASS
CARS. HE’S UP TO SEVENTH PLACE,
WORKING ON KAHNE FOR SIXTH.>>I’M NOT SURPRISED.
HE’S JUST SUCH A BULLDOG WHEN IT COMES TO RACING.
HE ALWAYS RACES BETTER THAN HE PRACTICES.
WE TALKED TO HIS CREW, THEY WEREN’T WORRIED AT ALL.
THEY SAID HE ALWAYS DRIVES BETTER WHEN THE RACE STARTS.
>>GOT TO FINISH IT UP HERE. CAUTIOUSLY.
MAKING SURE THE 5 WAS GOING TO GIVE HIM ROOM.
>>WELL, THEY MADE A GOOD ADJUSTMENT ON THE CAR.
AND THE 31 DIDN’T TEST HERE AT HOMESTEAD LIKE MANY OTHERS.
BUT THE CREW CHIEF SAID, THE SAME TIRES THEY RAN ON IN
CHICAGO AND TEXAS, ALTHOUGH THEY DIDN’T HAVE GREAT RESULTS THERE,
THEY FELT LIKE THE CAR HANDLED WELL THERE.
SO, ANOTHER REASON THE 31 WAS OPTIMISTIC COMING HERE TO
HOMESTEAD FOR THE FINALE.>>I THOUGHT HE HAD A PHOENIX
FLASHBACK FOR A MINUTE THERE. WASN’T GOING TO LET OFF.
>>THAT’S A CAR GOING REALLY STRONG RIGHT NOW.
>>GOOD ADJUSTMENTS TO PUT RYAN NEWMAN HEADED IN THE DIRECTION
HE WANTED TO GO.>>WE TALKED A LOT ABOUT, IN THE
CHAMPIONSHIP, SINCE IT BEGAN, BOTH OF YOU PREDICTED THAT YOU’D
HAVE TO WIN THIS FINAL RACE TO WIN THIS CHAMPIONSHIP.
HERE WE ARE, FOUR CHAMPIONSHIP-ELIGIBLE DRIVERS,
IN THE TOP SIX POSITIONS OF THE RACE.
>>THEY’VE PUSHED EACH OTHER TO A HIGHER COMPETITIVE LEVEL.
ALL OF THE TEAMS, IN THE TOP SIX.
>>THE ONLY OTHER DRIVERS IN THE TOP SIX, HAVE TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
BETWEEN THEM.>>GORDON AND JOHNSON.
RYAN NEWMAN, THE BOILERMAKER, LOOKING FOR A CHAMPIONSHIP.
TRYING TO TAKE HIS FORMULA AND WIN.
>>>HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY, WHERE JEFF GORDON LEADS, HAS LED
ABOUT 100 MILES OF THIS ONE. 66 OF THE 81 THAT HAVE BEEN
COMPLETED. CARS.COM, ALL DRIVE, NO DRAMA.
SHOWING YOU THE BIGGEST MOVERS IN THIS RACE.
AND ROCKETMAN HAS BEEN THAT. PAUL MENARD AND MARCOS AMBROSE
HAD TO START AT BACK OF THE FIELD FOR UNAPPROVED ADJUSTMENTS
POST-INSPECTION. AND KYLE LARSON, ON A TRACK THAT
FITS HIS STYLE. WORKING THAT THROTTLE.
HE’S ALSO HAVING A NICE RUN SO FAR.
>>YOU CAN SEE THE INTENSITY. HE’S ALWAYS UP ON THAT WHEEL.
>>AND EVERY DRIVER IS COMPLETELY FOCUSED, BUT NONE
LIKE WHEN WHEN HE HAVE THESE SHOTS OF RYAN NEWMAN.
UNBELIEVABLE CONCENTRATION RIGHT THERE.
YOU CAN SEE THE BUMPS IN THE RACETRACK, REALLY MOVING HIM
AROUND.>>NEWMAN IS 5.9 SECONDS BEHIND
JEFF GORDON. JEFF, SETTING QUITE A PACE IN
THIS GREEN FLAG RUN OF THE RACE. TWO SECONDS AHEAD OF HARVICK.
AND 5.9 SECONDS OVER RYAN NEWMAN.
LOGANO HAS DROPPED BACK IN THE RACE.
WHAT’S UP?>>WELL, THE CAR GETTING TIGHT.
REPORTING THAT ON LAP 69, AND NOW SAYING IT’S EVEN TIGHTER.
THEY NEED TO ADJUST IT.>>AND WE’LL SEE, WHEN THE TRACK
STARTS GETTING COLDER, IT WILL GET FREER.
>>AND JIMMIE JOHNSON.>>LOGANO, HE HAS TO BE CAREFUL,
HE’S RIGHT UP AGAINST THE WALL WITH A TIGHT RACE CAR.
HE COULD SLAM SOMEBODY UP AGAINST THE WALL.
>>OFF THE CORNER, SCRUBBING THE WALL, OFF THE BACK STRAIGHTAWAY.
THIS MAY BE THE 56 CAR, MOFFITT, FOR THE SECOND TIME IN THIS
RACE. AND IN FACT, IT WAS.
>>RIGHT IN FRONT OF LOGANO.>>CHANGE THE RIGHT TIRES.
>>CLEAR.>>THINKING JIMMIE JOHNSON MAY
HAVE HAD A LOOSE WHEEL.>>THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE
CAUTION FOR MOFFITT BEING OFF THE WALL.
THIS WRAPS UP A 33-LAP GREEN FLAG RUN.
AND THIS SHOULD GIVE MARCOS AMBROSE A FREE PASS INTO THE
LEAD LAP.>>A GOOD TEST TO SEE HOW THEY
PERFORM UNDER PRESSURE.>>THERE’S A PIT CREW THAT HAS
BEEN ROCK-SOLID ALL YEAR, DENNY HAMLIN’S.
>>THEY HAVE. AND THEY’RE SO COMPETITIVE,
WITHIN A TENTH OF A SECOND, TO GET AHEAD OF ONE SPOT.
A LOT OF INTENSITY DOWN THERE.>>THIRD ROUND OF PIT STOPS IN
THE RACE.>>NEWMAN SAYING, IT’S TOO SNUG
IN THE CENTER. GETTING A WINDSHIELD TEAROFF,
TWO TIRES AND FUEL.>>AND LOGANO TELLING THE CREW,
FOUR TIRES, ADJUSTMENTS.>>11.9 SECONDS, HOW ABOUT THAT
STOP FOR DENNY HAMLIN’S CREW? HE GAINS A SPOT.
>>NEWMAN’S TEAM, LOSING A FEW. KYLE BUSCH’S TEAM WITH GREAT
WORK AS WELL. A YELLOW FLAG AT THE FORD
ECOBOOST 400.>>>DOUBLE UP FOR THE RESTART AT
HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY. WRAPPING UP THE THIRD CAUTION OF
THIS RACE. AND HOW THE CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTET
TEAMS DID.>>WELL, THEY ALL PERFORMED AT A
HIGH LEVEL, AND A COUPLE EVEN STEPPED IT UP.
>>11.3 FOR LOGANO, THAT’S STRONG.
AND HERE, THE 41, A DECENT SIZE STOP.
JUST A LITTLE BIT OF TROUBLE COMING OFF.
MAYBE LOSE A LITTLE BIT MORE COMING OFF THE LEFT ON THE REAR.
>>THIS CHAMPIONSHIP COULD COME DOWN TO THE PIT STOPS.
>>AND IT COULD COME DOWN TO A LATE RESTART.
LAST ONE GOT PRETTY EXCITING. AND JEFF GORDON, CHOOSING THE
INSIDE LANE AFTER CHOOSING THE OUTSIDE LANE ON PREVIOUS
RESTARTS. AND THE GREEN FLAG RESTART
PRESENTED BY DIET MOUNTAIN DEW. LARSON, AROUND THE OUTSIDE.
>>I WONDERED WHEN HE WAS GOING TO SHOW UP.
>>NEWMAN, LOOKING THREE-WIDE. THAT’S A TIGHT SPOT FOR NEWMAN
TO BE IN RIGHT THERE. LARSON, THE DRIVER WHOSE FOUR
TIRES NEWMAN LEANED ON TO GET INTO THE CHAMPIONSHIP AT
PHOENIX. HAS RUN ALL THE WAY UP, FROM
27th STARTING SPOT INTO THE TOP TEN.
>>I WOULDN’T COUNT ON IT AT THE END OF THE RACE, THOUGH.
>>THE WAY HE USED THEM IN PHOENIX LAST WEEK, HE DESERVES
IT.>>GORDON, HAMLIN, HARVICK,
LOGANO. THEN JOHNSON FIFTH.
BUSCH, PICKING UP THREE SPOTS FROM THE ROUND OF PIT STOPS.
LARSON, NEWMAN, KENSETH, AND KAHNE.
KASEY STARTED BACK IN 23rd.>>ONE THING THE CLOUD COVER IS
DOING, WE SAW THE DUAL VISOR THAT JIMMIE JOHNSON HAD ON
EARLIER. AND THE BIG ROLLS THEY HAVE DOWN
THE INSIDE OF THE WINDSHIELDS, THAT’S TAKEN THAT OUT OF PLAY.
>>IT’S BEEN A BIG RELIEF FOR THE DRIVERS NOT HAVING TO FIGHT
THE SUN. RESTARTS ARE VERY DIFFICULT TO
FACE THOSE. BUT THEY’VE BEEN VERY FORTUNATE
TO THIS POINT.>>THE EXTRA SUN VISOR FOR
JIMMIE JOHNSON IN THE “OFF” POSITION, WE’LL CALL IT.
CHASING LOGANO FOR FOURTH SPOT.>>THE VIBRATION —
>>COPY THAT, LET ME KNOW.>>WELL, YOU DON’T WANT TO HEAR
THAT, ESPECIALLY AFTER YOU JUST MADE AN 11.3-SECOND PIT STOP.
A GOOD CHANCE THERE’S A LOOSE WHEEL.
>>WE’LL MONITOR THAT. AND HARVICK, WHO GET WORKED OVER
BY HAMLIN, NOW, THE TABLES TURNING, LOOKING FOR A WAY TO
WORK HAMLIN OVER FOR THE RUNNER-UP SPOT.
>>I SAW HIM MOVE TO THE THIRD LANE, VERY, VERY QUICKLY HERE IN
THIS RUN. AND I THINK PART OF THAT, YOU
CAN SAVE YOUR TIRES A LITTLE BIT THERE.
YOU CAN RUN HARD ON THE BOTTOM AND MAKE UP SPEED, AND HEAT UP
THE FRONT TIRES QUITE A BIT.>>CHANGE FOR FOR SECOND.
HARVICK IS BY. DALE EARNHARDT JR. FOR AN
UNSCHEDULED STOP FROM 13th PLACE.
>>FOUR TIRES, GUYS.>>AND THIS, SOON AFTER A PIT
STOP, MAY TELL YOU THEY HAD A VIBRATION THERE.
>>IT’S A FLAT TIRE. THEY HAVE TO BRING JUNIOR IN.
A BAD BREAK FOR THE 88. DALE EARNHARDT JR. AND HIS CREW
CHIEF WORKING TOGETHER FOR THE FINAL TIME TODAY.
>>THERE YOU GO. SO, RIGHT REAR FLAT ON THE 88
CAR. AND DALE JR., GOING TO LOSE A
LAP TO THE RACE LEADERS. A LOT OF TIME TO MAKE IT UP.
>>ALSO GOT HIMSELF IN A SPOT IN THE RESTART, LOOKED LIKE HE WAS
GOING TO GO FORWARD, BUT WENT BACK FOR A LAP OR TWO.
NOW, STARTED BACK IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.
>>HE HAD SOME MOMENTUM, LARSON COMING UP ON HIM, AND NOW LARSON
LOOKING TO PULL UP ON KYLE BUSCH.
JUST THE MOMENTUM THAT HE HAS. THAT’S RIGHT ON THE BOTTOM.
GIVES UP A LITTLE BIT ON THE EXIT HERE.
>>THE 150-MILE MARK OF THE FORD ECOBOOST 400, THE
CHAMPIONSHIP-DECIDING RACE FOR THE NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES.
AND JEFF GORDON, DOING MOST OF THE LEADING OF THIS ONE.
AND THE FOUR CHAMPIONSHIP DRIVES, ALL IN THE TOP SEVEN
POSITIONS. HARVICK, HAMLIN, NEWMAN, AND
LOGANO. AND KESELOWSKI, TRAPPED IN A
YELLOW, BUT RACED ALL THE WAY BACK.
AND DALE EARNHARDT JR., WITH A GREEN FLAG PIT STOP, ALL THE WAY
BACK TO 32nd. AND WE’VE HAD FIVE DIFFERENT
DRIVERS LEADING THE RACE, WITH SIX LEAD CHANGES.
BUT GORDON, THE DOMINANT ONE UP FRONT SO FAR.
BOWYER, KAHNE. THIS, FOR 11th AND 12th.
KASEY, STARTING BACK, GIVEN UP ONE SINCE THE RESTART.
TRYING NOT TOE GIVE UP MORE. AND BEGINNING TO SEE THE LIGHTS
FROM THIS RACETRACK, GLEAMING FROM THE POLISHED PAINT ON THESE
RACE CARS. JEFF GORDON’S STAR IS SHINING
BRIGHTLY IN SOUTH FLORIDA. DONE A LOT OF LEADING IN THIS
ONE SO FAR.>>>THE BIG PRIZE BEING CHASED
HERE AT HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY.
THE SPRINT CUP CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY, AWARDED TO THE HIGHEST
FINISHER AMONG THIS GROUP. AND THEY’RE ALL IN THE TOP
EIGHT. HARVICK, HAMLIN, LOGANO, AND
NEWMAN, PUTTING ON A GREAT RACE. THE ONLY PROBLEM, JEFF GORDON IS
DOMINATING THIS ONE WITH A GREAT CAR.
IT’S THE FORD ECOBOOST 400 FROM THE HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY.
AND NASCAR.COM/RACEBUTDY HAS 10 LIVE RACE VIEWS, AND ALL THE
LEADER BOARDS. LOGANO, RUNNING SIXTH, PURSUED
BY KYLE BUSCH. LET’S CHECK IN ON THE TOP TEN
RUNNERS IN THE RACE.>>AS YOU MAY EXPECT, JEFF
GORDON IS HAPPY WITH HIS CAR. HE SAID HE DOESN’T HAVE ANYTHING
TO COMPLAIN ABOUT. HE SAID THEY MAY WANT TO TIGHTEN
HIM UP A LITTLE BIT ON THE NEXT STOP.
AND THEY SAID, HIS CAR DOESN’T HAVE THE DROPOFF IN SPEED, BEING
VERY CONSISTENT, SO KEEP IT UP.>>AND HARVICK, STARTING THE DAY
TENTH AND LEAD 11 LAPS. BUT THEN HE GOT TOO LOOSE, AND
HIS CREW CHIEF TOLD ME, THE KEY TO THIS RACE IS KEEPING UP WITH
THE TRACK. AND IT’S GOING TO FREE UP.
SO, THEY’VE TIGHTENED HIM UP THE LAST TWO STARTS.
SO, THE 4, PRETTY HAPPY.>>AND DENNY HAMLIN WON LAST
YEAR HERE. AND HE SAID, THEY BROUGHT THE
EXACT SAME SETUP, JUST TWEAKED IT A BIT.
HE SAID THE LONGER THEY RUN, THE LATER IT GETS, THE BETTER HE
WILL GO. LOOK FOR IT TO GET DARK, AND THE
11 TO GET FAST.>>JIMMIE JOHNSON STARTED 12th
TODAY, CURRENTLY IN 4th. THEY’VE BEEN CREEPING UP ON
MAYBE A LITTLE RIGHT SIDE WALL CONTACT A LITTLE BIT AGO.
BUT THEIR SPOTTER SAYS IT’S FINE FOR NOW.
THEY USED THIS CAR AT TEXAS AND WON THERE.
SO, THE 18 OF KYLE BUSCH, THEY’VE BEEN PUSHING THE FRONT
END, AND STRUGGLING WITH THE ROTATION.
DAVE ROGERS CALLING FOR WEDGE AND AIR PRESSURE ADJUSTMENT, AND
KYLE IS GETTING BETTER. A NICE LITTLE BATTLE BETWEEN THE
4 AND 11 THERE.>>FOR SECOND PLACE.
HAMLIN TRYING TO GET IT FROM HARVICK.
AND THE 4 CAR HAS BEEN GOOD ALL YEAR, THEY’VE HAD SPEED, BUT
DON’T GIVE UP A LOT ON THE LONGER RUNS.
HAVEN’T SEEN THAT TOO MUCH TODAY AT THIS POINT IN TIME.
THE ONLY TIME HE GOES TO THE VERY HIGH LINE, WHEN HAMLIN
COMES TO CHALLENGE FOR THAT SPOT.
I THINK WE CAN SEE WHEN THAT HAPPENS, HARVICK’S CAR IS A
LITTLE BIT FASTER WHEN HE GOES UP THERE.
>>OH, SCRAPING THE WALL IN TURN NUMBER TWO.
CAUTION OUT. SHEDDING A TIRE.
ALEX BOWMAN. YELLOW FLAG NUMBER FOUR IN THE
RACE.>>SLOW DOWN.
JUST SLOW DOWN A LITTLE BIT.>>CARL EDWARDS —
>>FIX THE CAR. FIX THE CAR.
>>YEAH.>>YEAH, HE GOT IT GOOD.
>>LOOKED LIKE HE KNOCKED THE BUMPER OFF OF IT.
>>ALL SIDEWAYS. THAT WILL TAKE SOME REPAIR.
>>SO, THE RIGHT REAR TIRE DOWN ALSO.
I DON’T KNOW IF THAT CREATED THE SITUATION.
>>MIGHT BE THE RESULT, OR COULD HAVE CAUSED IT.
>>JUST FIX THE CAR. LEAVE THEM ON.
>>THE VOICE YOU HEAR, HIS FINAL RACE AS CREW CHIEF.
CAME DOWN AT THE REQUEST OF BOBBY ALLISON.
JIMMY SAID I’M COMING TO WORK, HE SAID IT WAS BOBBY ALLISON WHO
PICKED HIM UP AT THE AIRPORT. THEY HAD GREAT SUCCESS TOGETHER,
WITH MARK MARTIN, AND NOW IN HIS LAST RACE.
>>HE’S HAD A GREAT CAREER, AN INCREDIBLE CREW CHIEF.
>>PIT STOPS HERE.>>THE CAR OF RYAN NEWMAN HAS
SWUNG TOO TIGHT. IT’S GOING TO BE A FOUR-TIRE
CHANGE, GOING TO GIVE HIM A WINDSHIELD TEAROFF AS WELL.
>>AND ANOTHER TRACK BAR ADJUSTMENT, AND FOUR TIRES.
>>AND LOGANO, HE CAN’T TURN, WEDGE AND AIR PRESSURE.
>>AND DENNY HAMLIN SAYS HIS CAR IS GETTING BETTER EVERY TIME.
SLOW RESTART FOR HAMLIN AS HE LEAVES PIT ROAD.
>>KYLE BUSCH HAS TROUBLES. MAYBE BROKE THE REAR END GEAR
SPINNING THE TIRES OUT OF THE PIT BOX.
HE WAS IN FIFTH PLACE COMING ON TO PIT ROAD A SECOND AGO.
>>>DOUBLED UP FOR THE RESTART OF THE FORD ECOBOOST 400.
AFTER A YELLOW FLAG, JEFF GORDON IN THE NUMBER ONE SPOT.
WE CHECK OUT THE FASTEST FOUR-TIRE PIT STOP TODAY.
KEVIN HARVICK’S TEAM SHINING ON THE BIG STAGE.
THE NUMBERS, AS WE REMIND YOU TO STAY CONNECTED WITH A SPRINT
SHARE PACK. $100 A MONTH AT
SPRINT.COM/BESTVALUE.>>THEY’RE BRINGING IT TODAY.
>>FREE PASS IN THE CAUTION TO DALE EARNHARDT JR.
HERE’S THE RESTART ORDER. AND GOT A LONG WAY TO GO.
ALMOST HALFWAY THROUGH.>>HAMLIN, OR TWO, THEY SURE
STACKED THINGS UP THERE.>>HARVICK LED THAT ONE.
LOGANO AND HAMLIN ARE SIDE-BY-SIDE BEHIND THESE TWO.
GORDON SQUEEZES IN FRONT. REGAINS THE LEAD.
NOW JOHNSON CHALLENGING HAMLIN FOR FOURTH PLACE.
>>TOO HARD.>>HARVICK THERE, MAYBE THE
SPLITTER WAS TOO HARD?>>I THOUGHT THAT WAS DENNY
HAMLIN’S VOICE, YEAH. HARVICK BY A LITTLE BIT THERE.
>>THAT SOUNDS LIKE A SMALL THING, BUT IT COULD BE A REAL
ISSUE TONIGHT WHEN SPEEDS PICK UP.
THE HIGHER SPEED YOU CAN GO, THE MORE IT’S GOING TO HIT.
THE MORE IT HITS, THE MORE IT HURTS YOU.
THAT’S SOMETHING THEY NEED TO ADDRESS BEFORE THE NIGHTFALL.
>>THE LATE RESTARTS, YOU NEED ALL YOU CAN GET IN A HURRY.
AND THE SPLITTER IS CLOSE TO THE GROUND THAN MOST GUYS.
THEY’RE PROTECTING IT FOR THE FAST SPEEDS.
IT REALLY IS KIND OF A TRADEOFF. I THINK THIS MAY COME DOWN TO A
LATE RESTART. YOU REALLY NEED TO BE READY TO
GO.>>DENNY, HIS CAR IS A LITTLE
TIGHT, THEY MAY NEED A COUPLE OF TRACK BARS.
ON THIS STOP, THEY DECIDED TO MAKE AN AIR PRESSURE ADJUSTMENT.
AFTER THE CHANGE, THAT’S WHEN HE COMPLAINED ON BEING UNDER THE
SPLITTER.>>TRYING TO RECLAIM FOURTH SPOT
FROM JIMMIE JOHNSON. AND HE DOES.
SO NOW, ALL FOUR CHAMPIONSHIP CONTENDERS IN THE TOP SIX
POSITIONS. WITH ONE OF THEM, HARVICK,
LEADING THE RACE.>>FIRST TIME WE’VE SEEN ANYBODY
GET AWAY FROM GORDON. BUT HARVICK, ALMOST A SECOND AND
A HALF LEAD NOW.>>THEY’VE HAD A FEW
OPPORTUNITIES TO MAKE ADJUSTMENTS.
>>THEY MADE A GOOD ADJUSTMENT ON THE 22 CAR.
SOME GREAT PIT STOPS. NEWMAN, GOING FORWARD.
LOOKS LIKE WE MAY HAVE ALL FOUR OF THESE GUYS IN THE TOP FIVE IN
A MINUTE.>>HOW ABOUT THAT?
AND KYLE BUSCH’S CAR HAS BEEN BEHIND THE WALL.
NOW, THEY’RE TAKING IT TO THE GARAGE AREA.
AN AXEL PROBLEM.>>THAT’S SECOND AND THIRD,
FOURTH, FIFTH, AND SIXTH THERE. HARVICK, ALMOST TWO SECONDS
AHEAD OF JEFF GORDON FOR THE RACE LEAD.
AND NEWMAN, LOOK AT HIM DRIVE THAT THING IN THERE.
>>IN THE CORNER.>>NOW GOING UP ON THE HIGH
SIDE.>>NEWMAN, HE’S RIGHT WHERE HE
WANTS TO BE. JOHNSON, TAKING THAT OPPORTUNITY
TO GO TO THE BOTTOM. NEWMAN LOOK A SLIDE, LOST THE
MOMENTUM, SO HE’S VULNERABLE TO JOHNSON ON THE BACK STRETCH.
HE SHOULD BE ABLE TO HOLD THAT SPOT.
YOU HOPE IT’S HAPPENING TO YOUR OPPONENT RATHER THAN HAPPENING
TO YOU, BUT THEY KNOW IT’S GOING TO HAPPEN.
>>ON THIS DAY, 1986, RICHARD CHILDRESS AND DALE EARNHARDT
TOOK THE TROPHY FOR THE FIRST WINSTON CUP CHAMPIONSHIP.
AND RICHARD ALWAYS HAD VOICE ON THE RADIO.
>>KEEP DIGGING, MAN.>>AND YOU KNOW HIM SO WELL.
>>I’VE HAD THAT VOICE IN MY EAR.
BUT WE DIDN’T HAVE OTHER TEAMS HE COULD HANG OUT WITH.
>>RICHARD IS SUCH A COMPETITIVE GUY.
>>YOU KNOW HIM SO WELL, WHAT HE’S BEEN THROUGH, THE LOSS OF
DALE EARNHARDT IN 2001. WHAT IT MEANT TO HIM PERSONALLY,
AND HIS GRANDSON COMING ON. NOW, THE OPPORTUNITY TO COME
BACK ON AT THIS LEVEL. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
>>I ASKED HIM, YOU’VE DONE IT ALL.
WON THE CHAMPIONSHIPS. WHY DO YOU KEEP DOING IT?
HE SAID, I LOVE WINNING, AND HE’S NOT FINISHED WINNING
CHAMPIONSHIPS.>>SO, RYAN NEWMAN FOR RICHARD
CHILDRESS RACING IN FIFTH. ALL FOUR OF THE CONTENDERS IN
THE TOP FIVE. HOW ABOUT THAT?
>>THEY SAY THERE’S ONE CHARACTERISTIC CHAMPIONS HAVE IN
COMMON. WE ALL HATE TO LOSE.
SO, ALL MY ENERGY GOES TO ONE SINGLE GOAL — WINNING.
FIVE-HOUR ENERGY.>>>HARVICK LEADING, LOOKING
DOWN ON THE RACE FOR FIFTH PLACE BETWEEN JOHNSON AND NEWMAN.
OUR AERIAL COVERAGE PROVIDED BY GOODYEAR, THE OFFICIAL TIRES OF
NASCAR. AND THE BASE OF THE AIRSHIPS
JUST TO THE NORTH OF THIS AREA. WHAT A DAY FOR A
CHAMPIONSHIP-DECIDING RACE. THIS NEW ELIMINATION-STYLE
FORMAT FOR THE CHASE. NOW, DOWN TO THE FINAL CHASE,
WITH THE FINAL FOUR, AND ALL FOUR OF THEM IN THE TOP SIX
SPOTS IN THE RACE. THEY’RE IN THE TOP SIX.
HARVICK, LOGANO, HAMLIN, AND NEWMAN.
>>NEWMAN’S STRUGGLES — YOU SEE JOHNSON VYING FOR THE FIFTH
SPOT. SOMETHING THEY’RE GOING TO HAVE
TO WORK ON. MAYBE THE COOLING WEATHER WILL
HELP. NORMALLY, YOU EXPECT THE CARS TO
GET A LITTLE BIT FREER IN THAT SITUATION.
>>AND RIGHT NOW, RYAN SAYS HE’S HAVING TO WAIT TOO LONG TO GET
BACK ON THE GAS. SO, HIS CREW CHIEF SAYING
THEY’LL KEEP WORKING ON IT. AND HE NOTED THE COOLER
CONDITIONS WILL HELP AS THE TRACK STARTS TO COOL AS WELL.
>>THE AIR TEMPERATURE HAS DROPPED ABOUT THREE DEGREES IN
THE LAST 30 MINUTES OR SO. I KNOW IT’S THREE DEGREES IN
SOME PARTS OF THE COUNTRY ALTOGETHER.
BUT THE TEMPERATURE EXPECTED TO DROP TO ABOUT 75 OR SO BY ABOUT
CHECKERED FLAG TIME. KYLE LARSON, PAST NEWMAN.
AND LARSON, A YEAR AGO, THEY ANNOUNCED THEY WERE GOING TO
MOVE HIM UP TO THE SPRINT CUP SERIES.
WELL, A TIP OF THE CAP TO CHIP GANASSI, BECAUSE HE KNEW WHAT HE
HAD. THIS KID WAS READY, AND HAS BEEN
A LOT OF FUN TO WATCH RACE THIS YEAR.
>>AND THE BIGGEST SURPRISE TO ME, HE HASN’T WON A RACE.
HE’S BEEN SO FAST, EVEN EARLY IN THE YEAR, IN CALIFORNIA.
SO MANY FAST RUNS. AND THIS WEEKEND, HE’S BEEN A
FACTOR IN THE NATIONWIDE SERIES AND IN THE TRUCK RACE.
>>AND THE BEST NON-CHASE FINISHER IN MANY RACES.
>>HE QUALIFIED 27th, SO A GOOD RECOVERY FOR THESE GUYS.
THE CREW CHIEF TOLD ME THEY HAD THIS RACE CIRCLED EARLY IN THE
YEAR. THEY’RE PLANNING TO GET UP
FRONT, JUST HAVE TO GET THERE FIRST.
>>AND STILL A LOT OF RACING LEFT TO GO.
JUST BASED ON WHAT HE’S DONE THIS YEAR, HE’S GOING TO BE OUR
GOODYEAR PERFORMER.>>WE SHOULD ALL THANK CHIP
GANASSI.>>OH, ALEX BOWMAN AGAIN IN THE
23. GETTING AHEAD.
>>HOW ABOUT THAT TRUCK RACE, GOT THIRD.
JUST WORE THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE TRUCK OUT.
>>A LOT MORE TO COME FROM THAT YOUNG MAN.
RACE WINS, AND BATTLING FOR CHAMPIONSHIPS.
>>KYLE BUSCH, ALL 43 STARTERS IN THE RUNNING.
HARVICK, SETTING A GOOD PACE IN THE MIDDLE STAGES OF THE RACE.
AFTER JEFF GORDON DOMINATED THE OPENING 150 MILES OR SO, GORDON
LEADING 107 OF THE 146 LAPS WE’VE RUN.
SINCE HARVICK GOT BY HIM, IT’S A 7.07-SECOND ADVANTAGE OVER
SECOND PLACE. UPDATE ON THE RACE LEADER FROM
JAMIE.>>HARVICK HAS LED 36 LAPS
ALREADY. THE WEEKEND DIDN’T START OFF AS
WELL AS THEY’D HOPED. BUT THEY JUST KEPT MAKING
ADJUSTMENTS, LOOSE, AND TIGHT, LOOSE, AND TIGHT.
THEY DECIDED TO PUT THE SETUP THEY UNLOADED WITH ON IT.
HE SAID ON RACE DAY, WE’RE GOING TO LOOK LIKE HEROES OR ZEROS.
NOW, LOOKING LIKE HEROES. A LITTLE LOOSE RIGHT NOW.
>>AND HARVICK, LEADING ALL DRIVERS IN LAPS LED THIS 2014
SEASON. SIX OF THE LAST 11 RACES, AND A
FOUR-TIME WINNER THIS YEAR. LOOKING FOR HIS FIRST SPRINT CUP
SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP TODAY.>>>HARVICK, THE RACE LEADER IN
THE FORD ECOBOOST 400. HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY, THE
FINAL RACE OF THE SPRINT CUP SERIES SEASON.
THE FINAL RACE, BRINGING UP SO MANY STORIES.
MARCOS AMBROSE IN HIS FINAL RACE ON THIS SIDE OF THE POND.
GOING BACK TO AUSTRALIA. AND AMBROSE, CALLING HIS
AMERICAN ADVENTURE, MORE THAN HE COULD HAVE DREAMED OF.
HE’S ENJOYED HIS TIME COMPLETELY.
YELLOW FLAG OUT. THE MAN AMBROSE RACED WITH AT
WATKINS GLEN EARLIER THIS YEAR, A.J. ALLMENDINGER, HITTING THE
WALL.>>HIT IT PRETTY GOOD.
>>WAS BATTLING TO GET A TOP TEN FINISH IN THE POINTS.
>>A.J. MAKING THE CHASE AS A RESULT OF HIS WIN AT WATKINS
GLEN. ELIMINATED AFTER THE FIRST
ROUND. LOOKING AHEAD TO TONY STEWART.
>>TURN THREE.>>THE TIRE LOOKS LIKE — I
THINK IT’S BROKE.>>DOWN ON THE LINER.
>>STARTED JUST AT THE ENTRANCE OF TURN THREE.
>>SO, CAUTION NUMBER FIVE. PIT ROAD CLOSED HERE.
AND IN THE LAST SEGMENT OF THE RACE, NASCAR INFORMED ALL THE
TEAMS THEY COULD PICK UP AN EXTRA SET OF TIRES.
THEY COULD HAVE 11 AT FIRST, NOW THEY CAN HAVE A DOZEN IF THEY
LIKE.>>THOSE GOODYEAR TIRE BUSTERS
ARE GOING TO WORK ALL THE WAY TO THE END.
AND THESE ARE THE NUMBER OF LAPS TODAY THAT THE FOUR CHAMPIONSHIP
DRIVERS HAVE SPENT AS THE LEADER OF THAT GROUP.
SO, AS THE CHAMPIONSHIP LEADER. AND YOU CAN SEE, HARVICK ON THE
TOP END OF THE SCALE. AND NEWMAN, WHILE RUNNING WELL,
HE HASN’T BEEN IN FRONT OF THE OTHER THREE SO FAR TODAY.
>>NOT TIME TO HAND OUT A TROPHY YET.
>>MARCOS AMBROSE, GOING TO GET THE FREE PASS ON THE CAUTION.
SO, HE’LL COME BACK AROUND ON TO THE LEAD LAP IN 22nd POSITION.
THIS IS GOING TO BE THE FIFTH TIME THE CREWS ARE GOING TO WORK
TODAY. JEFF GORDON’S TEAM HELD THE LEAD
ALL PREVIOUS TIMES, BUT HE CAME IN AS THE LEADER IN ALL THE
PREVIOUS INSTANCES. SEE WHAT HAPPENS HERE, IF IT’S
HE OR HARVICK. NEWMAN, SAYING THE CAR IS
BETTER, BUT STILL TOO TIGHT. TAPE ON THE GRILL.
>>AND FOUR TIRES.>>LOGANO, FOUR TIRES.
>>AND DENNY HAMLIN, TRYING TO GET A LITTLE BIT OF TAPE ON THE
GRILL. HAMLIN, TRYING TO BEAT HARVICK
OFF OF PIT ROAD.>>WANT TO KNOW WHY IT’S
IMPORTANT TO WIN POLE POSITION? THAT FIRST PIT BOX, DUMP THE
CLUTCH, AND YOU’RE AT THE SCORING LINE.
SO, JEFF GORDON’S TEAM REGAINS HIM THE LEAD ON THE YELLOW FLAG
PIT STOP.>>>RYAN, WHY WILL YOU WIN THE
CHAMPIONSHIP TODAY?>>I KNOW I WANT IT, AND THE
GUYS ON THE TEAM WANT IT. WE HAVEN’T QUIT ALL YEAR, AND
HAVE NO INTENTIONS OF QUITTING TONIGHT.
>>WE’VE HAD AN AWESOME SEASON. WE’LL JUST GO OUT AND HAVE SOME
FUN.>>WE HAVE HEART.
>>THE CONTENDERS FOR THE NASCAR SPRINT CUP CHAMPIONSHIP TODAY.
TELLING US WHY THEY WANT TO WIN, AND ALL FOUR HAVING SOLID RUNS
IN WITH 108 LAPS TO GO. JEFF GORDON, RECLAIMING THE RACE
LEAD. THE ONLY OTHER NONCHAMPIONSHIP
INTERLOPER, MATT KENSETH. SUNSET, ABOUT 20 MINUTES AWAY.
AND JEFF GORDON, LEADING IN THE GREEN.
>>THE RUN HARVICK HAS ON THE TOPSIDE.
DIDN’T WORK OUT FOR HIM.>>LOGANO TO THIRD AROUND
HARVICK. HAMLIN HUNTS THE LEAD ON JEFF
GORDON. RYAN NEWMAN INTO FIFTH ON THE
RESTART. LOOK AT THAT, OH, TROUBLE, TURN
THREE. CAR ON THE WALL.
IS THAT GREG BIFFLE?>>YES.
>>SIXTH CAUTION.>>SLOW DOWN.
GO TO PIT ROAD.>>HE REALLY TORE THAT ONE UP.
>>RUNNING IN 20th PLACE.>>TOUGH DAY FOR THOSE TEAMS.
EDWARDS HITTING THE WALL HARD, NOW BIFFLE.
BEEN A TOUGH YEAR FOR THEM, REALLY.
>>THE CONTACT THERE, LET’S SEE THAT AGAIN.
YEAH. LOOKS LIKE THE RIGHT FRONT WENT
DOWN. LOOKS LIKE HE WENT BEHIND
VICKERS INTO THE WALL.>>SURE DID.
>>SEE THE SMOKE THERE STARTING?>>HE’S GOT A LOT DOWN FROM
HERE. PROBABLY LUCKY NOBODY WAS THERE
ON THE SIDE. VICKERS WAS ABLE TO SLIP JUST BY
BEFORE THE CAR WENT INTO THE WALL.
A FRUSTRATING SEASON FOR BIFFLE AND HIS TEAM.
>>SO, YELLOW FLAG NUMBER SIX IS OUT IN THIS RACE.
MOST OF THE LEADERS WERE JUST ON PIT ROAD.
THERE ARE SOME PIT STOPS, BUT NONE OF THE FRONT RUNNERS.
KESELOWSKI, THE FIRST ONE TO MAKE A BREAK FOR IT.
SO, WHILE WE WORK THE YELLOW FLAG, LET’S CHECK IN WITH THE
STUDIO.>>WE WERE TALKING ALL RACE
ABOUT HOW MUCH AND CHAMPIONSHIP DRIVERS HAVE BEEN DIGGING DEEP.
YOU NEED TO STEP IT UP, AND THAT’S WHAT THEY’RE DOING.
>>ALL FOUR OF THE GUYS, ALL DAY LONG, SIDE-BY-SIDE.
RIGHT NOW, RUNNING SECOND THROUGH FIFTH.
AND NOT SHOWING ANY SIGN OF SLOWING DOWN.
TRYING TO LEAD EVERY SINGLE LAP.>>NEWMAN, HE’S STRUGGLING, BUT
HE’S FIGHTING, SCRATCHING, CLAWING.
THEY’RE DOING EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO KEEP EACH OTHER IN EYE
SIGHT.>>AND JEFF GORDON, HE WON THE
POLE. THE 77th OF HIS CAREER.
AND HE SAID IF WE GO ON TO WIN THIS RACE, IT MAKES EVERYTHING
ELSE THAT MUCH MORE BITTERSWEET.>>WELL, HE’S TRYING TO PROVE A
POINT. HE’S SO STRONG, DESERVES TO BE
IN THE CHASE. HE BARELY MISSED IT.
DOMINATING TODAY, AND YOU CAN TELL HE’S MAD A LITTLE BIT.
WANTS TO PROVE A POINT, HE WANTS TO GET IT DONE.
HE’S DRIVING LIKE A CHAMPIONSHIP RIGHT NOW.
>>LET’S KNOCK OFF ABOUT 50 MORE LAPS, AND START TO TALK ABOUT
IT.>>RIGHT, WE’RE HEADING INTO
DARKNESS IN A MINUTE.>>BACK TO YOU.
>>WELL, I DON’T KNOW HOW YOU COULD ASK FOR VERY MUCH MORE.
ALL FOUR CONTENDERS IN THE TOP FIVE SPOTS.
>>AND THE GUY IN THE FRONT, HE WAS JUST BARELY OUT FROM THE TOP
FOUR.>>IT’S TOUGH TO SAY, WE’RE
GAINING SPEED. IT’S LIKE, WE HAVE TO BE CAREFUL
ON ENTRY. THAT’S WHERE I’M GETTING HURT ON
THE RESTARTS, NOT BEING ABLE TO DRIVE IN HARD, BECAUSE I KNOW
I’LL LAY FLAT ON THE SPLITTER AND KNOCK IT OFF.
>>TALKING TO DENNY HAMLIN AS WE GET READY TO GO.
WITH 102 LAPS LEFT IN THE SEASON.
THREE-WIDE, LOGANO TO THE BOTTOM, FOR THE RACE LEAD.
HARVICK TO THE OUTSIDE. AND HAMLIN, UP THROUGH THE
CENTER, COMING OUT ON TOP.>>>MAN, THIS IS SO FUN.
BEHIND THESE GUYS, DALE EARNHARDT JR. COMING BACK FROM A
FLAT TIRE EARLY IN THE RACE, JUST MADE A GREAT MOVE.
UP TO SIXTH PLACE, CHALLENGING NEWMAN WHILE THESE GUYS RACE FOR
SECOND.>>HE HAS TO GO SOMEWHERE.
BATTLING HAMLIN, BUT NOWHERE TO GO RIGHT NOW.
AND SPEAKING OF JUNIOR, THIS CAR IS REALLY FAST.
GOING THROUGH TRAFFIC.>>LOOK AT THAT, 35th, A LAP
DOWN AFTER A FLAT TIRE. NOW RACING FOR SIXTH.
>>LOOK AT LOGANO WHEEL THAT THING.
MAN.>>THERE’S STILL A LOT TO GO.
JUST UNDER 100 LAPS. BUT THEY KNOW IT’S GETTING DOWN
TO THAT TIME. LOOK AT HARVICK, A LITTLE WIGGLE
THERE OFF THE CORNER.>>AND NOW, JUNIOR, ON RYAN
NEWMAN. THAT WILL PUT JUNIOR INTO THE
TOP FIVE. NEWMAN, BACK TO SIXTH PLACE.
WHAT A RALLY FOR THE 88 CAR.>>TALKING ABOUT HOW FAST IT IS.
IT’S LOOSE, AS WELL, AND THEY SAID, I KNOW YOU DON’T LIKE IT
THIS WAY, BUT YOU’RE REALLY FAST THIS WAY.
SO, PLEASE HANG ON. SO, THAT’S WHAT JUNIOR IS DOING.
AND HE’S HEADING TO THE FRONT.>>SOMETIMES THAT’S WHAT YOU
HAVE TO DO. THEY’RE JUST LOOKING AT THE LAP
TIMES.>>WHEN YOU’RE PASSING CARS,
YOU’RE ABLE TO HANG ON TO A LOOSE CAR A LITTLE BIT BETTER.
BUT AS WE’VE SAID, THIS TRACK TENDS TO GO LOOSER YET.
SO THEY’LL HAVE TO MAKE ADJUSTMENTS FOR JUNIOR STILL IN
THE RACE.>>LOOSE AND FAST.
>>IS THIS HIS “DAYS OF THUNDER” MOMENT?
>>HE KNOWS HOW TO SET ONE UP.>>THIRD PLACE, GORDON, HARVICK,
DALE EARNHARDT JR. AND WHILE WE WATCH THIS, CAN I
DO A LITTLE HOUSEKEEPING FROM THE LAST RESTART?
KESELOWSKI PITTED FROM 11th PLACE, RESTARTED 14th.
NOW EIGHTH. OTHERS THAT PITTED ON THAT
YELLOW, JOHNSON, KAHNE, BOWYER, TRUEX, MENARD, ALL PITTING ON
THE LAST YELLOW FLAG.>>NEWMAN ISN’T GOING AWAY.
JUST GETS TO THE END OF THE CORNER SO FAST.
CARRIES MORE SPEED, A LOT OF THE DRIVERS ARE BACKED UP TO DRIVE
IT UP TO THE CORNER. I THOUGHT THAT WAS GOING TO BE A
PLUS. THAT COULD BE A BIG PLUS,
ESPECIALLY ON THE LATE RESTART.>>LAST LAP, OFF THE CORNER LIKE
THAT, THAT COULD BE A BIG HELP.>>AFTER GETTING CLEAR OF THE
FIGHT FOR SECOND, LOGANO NOW TRACKING DOWN DENNY HAMLIN FOR
THE RACE LEAD.>>HE’S BEEN STRONG ON THESE ALL
YEAR LONG.>>SO, ACROSS THE 250-MILE MARK.
WHAT A FIGHT IN THE RACE THAT WILL DECIDE THE 2014 SPRINT CUP
CHAMPIONSHIP. NEWMAN, JUST PASSING DALE
EARNHARDT JR. FOR FIFTH.>>>87 LAPS TO GO IN THE FORD
ECOBOOST 400 FOR THE NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES AT
HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY. AND IN FLORIDA, THEY HAD THE
THURSDAY NIGHT GAME BETWEEN THE DOLPHINS AND BILLS.
AND MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL FEATURES THE STEELERS AND TITANS
AT 8:15 EASTERN ON ESPN AND WATCH ESPN.
THE STEELERS LOOKING TO REBOUND DOWN IN MUSIC CITY.
DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME. HARVICK, LOGANO, FIGHTING FOR
SECOND PLACE. BEHIND HAMLIN.
AND NEWMAN, IN SIXTH PLACE. WE’RE LOOKING AT THE RIGHT SIDE
OF THE 22 CAR TO SEE IF IT’S SCUFFED UP A LITTLE BIT, AND IF
IT LEFT A MARK ON THE WALL.>>GOT IT PRETTY GOOD.
WE TALKED ABOUT BEFORE THE RACE STARTED, PICK AND CHOOSE YOUR
TIMES YOU’RE GOING TO GO UP THERE AND CHALLENGE THIS.
LOGANO, A LITTLE TOO MUCH SPEED, NOT ENOUGH GRIP AT THIS POINT.
>>HIT THE WALL A LITTLE BIT THERE.
>>SO, JOEY, STILL RUNNING THIRD.
AND STILL GOT A LONG WAY TO GO IN THIS ONE.
>>WE TALKED ABOUT, FROM A NARROW STANDPOINT, THAT FORWARD
OF THE CAR TO THE RIGHT REAR. THAT KIND OF DAMAGE COULD HURT
YOU.>>AND THE FOUR DRIVERS IN THE
CHAMPIONSHIP HAVE BEEN IN THE TOP SIX, SEVEN SPOTS FOR ALMOST
THE ENTIRE RACE. AND JEFF GORDON, CHARGING
FORWARD AFTER THE FIRST STOP. AND THESE GUYS HAVE BEEN IN THE
LEAD GROUP EVER SINCE. ALL OF THEM, FIGHTING IT OUT
WITH JEFF GORDON FOR THE TOP SPOTS.
GORDON, THE STRONGEST OF THE NON-CHASE CARS TODAY.
HE’S IN THIRD POSITION NOW. AND TODD GORDON, REACTING TO
SEEING THE FOOTAGE OF HIS DRIVER SCUFFING THE WALL.
AND A PHOTO THEREOF CAPTURED BY THE TEAM.
>>HE’LL HAVE A PLAN TO GET IT FIXED UP AT THE NEXT STOP.
>>YOU WERE THE LAST ONE TO ADJUST IT!
>>TODD GORDON, ONE THING HE’LL REMIND JOEY OF TODAY, PRE-RACE,
HE SAID, WE HAVE HAD SEVERAL OPPORTUNITIES TO COME BACK THIS
YEAR. JOEY, WITH A TIGHT RACE CAR.
A LITTLE DAMAGE, BUT THE OPPORTUNITY NOT TO LET THE
SITUATION CAVE IN ON THEM.>>AND LOGANO, SLIDING IN.
AND TONY STEWART TAKING HIS CAR TO
THE GARAGE AREA.
FROM 26th PLACE. HE WAS RUNNING A LAP DOWN, AND
HIS CONSECUTIVE SEASONS OF ONE-WIN STREAK WILL END AT 15
YEARS.>>WINS ONE EVERY YEAR PREVIOUS
TO THIS ONE.>>ANOTHER ONE INTO THE WALL.
PAUL MENARD, IT LOOKS LIKE, THE 27.
>>THIS PLACE IS SLIPPERY.>>AND NOW, THE TRACK, COOLING
DOWN. YOUR SPEEDS PICK UP, AND YOU
HAVE TO ADJUST.>>HANG ON TO IT, PAUL.
>>THE RIGHT REAR IS DOWN. HOPE WE DON’T HAVE A REPEAT OF
WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM HERE LAST YEAR.
>>OH, YEAH. RIGHT REAR WHEEL BLEW OFF THE
CAR. IN THE PIT AREA.
>>PAUL, RUNNING IN 15th PLACE WHEN HE GOT INTO THE WALL THERE.
AND HIS CREW –>>NOT SURE, GOING DOWN —
>>REALLY IMPRESSED TO WATCH KEVIN HARVICK HERE.
JUST NOT BUYING INTO THE FACT THAT TO GO UP NEAR THE WALL AT
THIS POINT IN TIME, HE MAY NOT NEED TO.
EVEN IF HE GIVES UP SECOND TO GORDON HERE, I DON’T THINK HE’S
READY TO GO UP HERE AND RUN LAP AFTER LAP CHALLENGING THE WALL.
>>WE SAW LOGANO LOSE A LITTLE BIT OF HIS GIDDY-UP AFTER HE HIT
THE WALL.>>HARVICK, TO SECOND PLACE.
A PRETTY STEADY GROUP OF CAUTIONS TODAY, THE LONGEST
GREEN FLAG STREAK, 44 LAPS. AND SOME OF THE THESE TIRE
CHANGERS ARE GOING TO BE FLAT WORN OUT IF THIS KEEPS UP.
>>WE EXPECT A LONG GREEN FLAG RUN AT SOME POINT IN THE RACE.
USUALLY HAPPENS.>>THE LAST NINE MIAMI RACES HAD
AT LEAST ONE GREEN FLAG STRETCH OF 53 LAPS OR MORE.
HAMLIN, HARVICK, LOGANO, NEWMAN. 77 LAPS TO SETTLE IT.
>>>DID SOMETHING SAY SOMETHING ABOUT TIRED TIRE CHANGERS?
YELLOW FLAG NUMBER SEVEN. MARCOS AMBROSE, RUNNING IN 17th
PLACE, AND THIS HAPPENED.>>A CALL FOR TREVOR BAYNE
THERE. HAS A TIRE GOING DOWN.
>>FREE PASS, A.J. ALLMENDINGER, PIT ROAD OPEN.
WITH 72 LAPS TO GO. COULD BE THE SECOND TO LAST PIT
STOP. BUT MAYBE NOT.
>>NEWMAN, WORKING HARD ON HIS CAR.
HE SAYS, I NEED SOME COLD WATER, AND A TUNED UP RACE CAR.
>>AND THEY’RE GOING TO ADJUST THE AIR PRESSURE, AND FOUR
TIRES.>>ADJUSTMENT FOR A CAR THAT’S
TIGHT.>>NO CHANGES, FOUR TIRES, AND
HAMLIN WILL SCOOT OFF PIT ROAD AND LOSE A SPOT.
>>AND THE 2, FALLING TO TENTH POSITION.
>>>DOUBLED UP FOR THE RESTART OF THE FORD ECOBOOST 400, HERE
AT HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY. AND NASCAR.COM, YOU CAN CHECK IT
FOR YOUR LATEST INFORMATION. GOING TO BE 69 LAPS TO GO.
AND LOGANO, BACK TO TENTH PLACE.>>LOOK AT ALL THE DAMAGE ON THE
RIGHT SIDE. THEY HAVE TO SPEND A LITTLE BIT
OF TIME FIXING THIS.>>GET THAT STUFF PULLED OUT
RIGHT.>>THEY DID A GOOD JOB NOT
LOSING TIME WHILE MAKING THE REPAIRS.
>>SO, HAMLIN SECOND, NEWMAN EIGHTH.
>>THEY GET IT DONE ON A WEEKLY BASIS, PRETTY MUCH EVERY PIT
STOP.>>HAMLIN ALONGSIDE JEFF GORDON
FOR THE RACE LEAD.>>GETTING TO A TIME WHERE THESE
RESTARTS COULD DECIDE WHO OUR CHAMPION IS.
SEE WHAT THE DRIVERS HAVE.>>A LOGANO, A LITTLE BOX THERE.
OH! KENSETH IN SOME TROUBLE, LOGANO,
CAUGHT BEHIND HIM. AND JIMMIE JOHNSON, NOWHERE TO
GO.>>HUGE ONE BY KENSETH THERE.
>>LOGANO, I DON’T KNOW HOW MUCH I’D BE GETTING ON THAT RIGHT
REAR QUARTER PANEL. BUT GOT TO GO.
DOING EVERYTHING HE CAN TO GET FORWARD.
>>WATCH THE JOB KENSETH DID, AND HOW TIGHT A SPOT THIS WAS
FOR LOGANO.>>THIS IS LOGANO’S CHAMPIONSHIP
RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM HAPPENING.>>ALL GOOD EVERYWHERE.
48, INSIDE, INSIDE, INSIDE, 48. INSIDE, 48.
>>YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A HEART RATE MONITOR ON THEM, SEE
HOW MUCH THAT PULSE SPIKES.>>AND IT’S A DRIVER NOT IN THE
SITUATION, YOU’RE JUST DOING YOUR JOB.
IT’S THE ONE BEHIND, YOU CAN’T DO ANYTHING LIKE IT.
>>YOU DON’T THINK LOGANO’S DIDN’T JUST —
>>NO, THE ONE BEHIND, IT’S KENSETH.
>>SO, LOGANO, IN EIGHTH PLACE. AND JEFF GORDON BACK IN THE RACE
LEAD. BACK EARLIER, AFTER A CAUTION AT
LAP 115. GORDON AND HARVICK SWAPPED THE
RACE LEAD FOUR TIMES BETWEEN THEM.
AND THEN HAMLIN WENT TO THE FRONT FOR A LITTLE WHILE.
BUT NOW IT’S GORDON BACK TO THE NUMBER ONE SPOT.
HE’S MADE THE MOST OF HAVING THE NUMBER ONE PIT STALL ON THE
STOPS, BY VIRTUE OF WINNING THAT POLE POSITION IN THE QUALIFYING.
>>WE HEARD HARVICK TALKING ABOUT —
>>WELL, THE ONLY ADJUSTMENT FOR THAT IS AIR PRESSURE.
SO, THEY HAVE TO — THEY CAN JUST ADD AIR TO TRY TO HELP THAT
SITUATION. THE DOWNSIDE OF IT, THE TIRES
WILL GIVE UP A LITTLE BIT MORE IN THE LONG RUN.
LET’S FOLLOW UP WITH THAT IN THE 11 PIT.
>>WELL, YOU GUYS ARE RIGHT. THEY’VE HELPED THE SPLITTER
SITUATION, JUST BARELY TOUCHING IT ON THE RESTARTS.
HE SAID IT’S STILL A LITTLE BIT TIGHT IN THE MIDDLE, BUT THEY
CAN’T MAKE ANYMORE CHANGES.>>AND YOU GUYS MENTIONED THE 4
WAS HITTING THE SPLITTER AS WELL.
SO, RODNEY CHILDRESS SAYING, THE CAR IS UP TOO HIGH.
AIR PRESSURE, AND THE RIGHT REAR TIRE, AND THE WEDGE AND TRACK
BAR ADJUSTMENT, SEEMS TO BE A LITTLE BIT BETTER THIS ONE.
>>THEY CAN LOWER THE CAR A LITTLE BIT.
THAT TAKES A LITTLE BIT OF TIME, NOT AS MUCH AS THE FRONT.
>>CAUTION IS OUT. I JUST HEARD THE PACE CAR
REPORTING SOMETHING IN, AND TREVOR BAYNE IN TURNS THREE AND
FOUR, NOT SURE IF SOMETHING CAME OUT FROM UNDER THE 21 CAR.
OKAY, SOMETHING CAME OUT FROM SOMEBODY’S CAR.
>>21, TAKING HIS CAR BEHIND THE WALL.
>>EIGHTH YELLOW FLAG OF THE RACE.
COMES OUT WITH 61 LAUGHS TO GO. AND TREVOR, ANOTHER ONE OF THE
SEASON-ENDING STORIES. GOING TO MAKE A FULL CAMPAIGN
FOR ROUSH-FENWAY NEXT SEASON. IT’S ONLY BEEN NINE LAPS OF
GREEN FLAG RACING.>>AND WE TALKED TO GUYS, FOUR
OR FIVE LAPS, STAYED OUT.>>I THINK WE’LL SEE THEM ON PIT
ROAD.>>THAT’S THE CUTOFF.
>>AND DO WE SEE SOME PEOPLE, I DON’T KNOW, BOWYER PLAYING A
LITTLE STRATEGY TO TRY TO GET UP FRONT?
SEE WHAT THEIR CAR CAN DO?>>NOTHING TO LOSE AT THIS POINT
IN THE SEASON.>>I THINK IT’S STRATEGY TO STAY
OUT.>>AND JUST A SIDEBAR STORY, WE
TALKED ABOUT THE RACE FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP.
EVERYBODY THAT MADE THE CHASE HAD THEIR POINTS RESET.
THEY’RE ALL COMPETING FOR FIFTH PLACE IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP.
AND KESELOWSKI AND GORDON ARE TIED IN POINTS.
>>I WOULDN’T EXPECT ANYTHING LESS.
>>THAT’S WITH JEFF WINNING AND BRAD COMING IN FOURTH PLACE.
59 TO GO.>>NEWMAN, THE CAR GETTING A
LITTLE BIT BETTER, BUT IT’S TIGHT AND GETS WORSE THE LONGER
THEY GO.>>HARVICK, FOUR TIRES, AIR
PRESSURE, ADJUSTMENT, RIGHT REAR.
>>AND LOGANO, WEDGING, AND GOING BE TIGHT IN THE MIDDLE,
AND TOO TIGHT ON RESTARTS. GOT TO GET OVER THE SPLITTER.
HAMLIN, HE’S AWAY.>>GORDON, NOSING AT THE LINE,
BARELY OVER HAMLIN. AND NEWMAN, LOSING FOUR SPOTS ON
THE ROUND OF PIT STOPS. THAT HURTS.
BY THAT MUCH. JEFF GORDON HANGING ON TO THE
RACE LEAD OF THE FORD ECOBOOST 400.
>>>A STUNNING EVENING IN SOUTH FLORIDA.
HOME OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP RACE. AERIAL COVERAGE PROVIDED BY
GOODYEAR. THE OFFICIAL TIRE OF NASCAR, AND
I JUST HAVE A FEELING, UNDER CAUTION FOR THE EIGHTH TIME.
THE TIRES MIGHT BE PUT TO THE TEST ON RESTARTS COMING UP.
AS WE GET DEEPER INTO THE RACE, THAT’S REALLY GOING TO BECOME A
STORYLINE.>>WELL, SEEMS LIKE THAT TOPSIDE
HAS SOME MOMENTUM HALF A COUPLE OF LAPS.
BUT IF HARVICK IS GETTING THAT CAR A LOT BETTER, LOGANO IS IN
TROUBLE WITH THE RIGHT SIDE TORE UP.
AND HAMLIN, HE’S RUNNING GREAT.>>JUST A LITTLE BIT OF COOL
AIR, THEY’RE COMING ALIVE. I THINK YOU’RE RIGHT, RESTARTS
WILL BE HUGE.>>JEFF GORDON IN FRONT.
>>AND ALL FOUR OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP CONTENDERS RUNNING
WELL. BUT LOGANO, RUNNING INTO THE
WALL, AND HE’S BACK IN EIGHTH PLACE.
AND RYAN NEWMAN, WITH A BAD PIT STOP THERE, DROPPING HIM FOUR
POSITIONS DOWN TO NINTH PLACE. HAMLIN AND HARVICK, SECOND AND
THIRD. GORDON, BACK IN THE LEAD.
55 LAPS TO GO. AND NO REASON TO DISAGREE WITH
THE INTENSITY OF THE RESTART.>>YOU DON’T KNOW IF THIS WILL
BE THE LAST ONE, AND YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO GET UP FRONT,
RIGHT NOW. LET’S SEE WHAT HAPPENS.
>>DENNY HAMLIN IN FRONT OF JEFF GORDON, FOR THE RACE LEAD.
>>HUGELY IMPORTANT FOR HARVICK’S CHANCES HERE TO GET BY
GORDON AS QUICKLY AS HE CAN.>>JUST IN CASE WE’VE SEEN THE
LAST OF THE YELLOW FLAGS. LOGANO, UP TO SIXTH.
NEWMAN, TRAPPED BACK AT 11.>>REALLY IMPRESSED WHAT HAMLIN
HAS BEEN ABLE TO DO IN THE LAST TWO RESTARTS.
GETTING POSITION UP FRONT.>>AND THE ADJUSTMENTS THEY MADE
TO THE CAR. THEY’VE REALLY TURNED THAT CAR
AROUND.>>AND THE JOE GIBBS RACING
ORGANIZATION, ADMITTING THEY DIDN’T HAVE THE PACE.
BUT DENNY, WITH THE VICTORY AT TALLADEGA IN MAY.
KENSETH, WINLESS ON THE YEAR. BUT AS THEY MADE THE CHASE, THEY
FOUND MORE PACE, FOUND BETTER HANDLING WITH THE CAR.
AND HAMLIN AND COMPANY GETTING STRONGER AND STRONGER WHEN IT
COUNTS THE MOST.>>IT’S ABOUT PEAKING AT THE
RIGHT TIME, AND GETTING TO THE END.
>>AND LOGANO, GOING AROUND DALE JR. TO GET HIMSELF INTO FIFTH
SPOT.>>IT’S NO GOOD AS FAR AS THE
CHAMPIONSHIP, BUT GETS YOU CLOSER TO THE OTHER GUYS.
HE CAN STILL SEE THEM.>>AND THERE’S NEWMAN.
BACK IN TENTH. NOT THE RIGHT TIME TO GIVE UP
TRACK POSITION IN THIS RACE. NEWMAN, STARTED IN 21st PLACE,
RACED HIS WAY UP TO THE TOP SIX AND TOP FIVE.
NOW, HAS A DEFICIT TO WORK THROUGH AND IT’S TIME TO MAKE
SOMETHING HAPPEN.>>WELL, WE DON’T SEE THESE GUYS
UP AGAINST THE WALL AS THE TRACK AS COOLED DOWN.
THEY’RE TAKING A SHORTER WAY AROUND.
AND LAP TIMES HAVE PICKED UP CONSIDERABLY.
>>BIG RUN BY HAMLIN ON JEFF GORDON HERE.
ANOTHER BIG RUN. LOOK AT HIM GAP THAT 24 UP.
OOPS, SLIPPED THERE.>>SOMETIMES YOU GET TO THE GAS
A LITTLE SOON, YOU SLIP UP. NOW, GORDON FALLING BACK TO THE
CLUTCHES OF KEVIN HARVICK. JOEY LOGANO, TRYING TO HANG ON
TO FIFTH, WITH DALE JR. ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE SCREEN.
>>HE KNOWS HE’S GOT TO MAKE A MOVE HERE.
NOW HAMLIN GOES BACK TO THE TOPSIDE OF THE RACETRACK.
GORDON, TRYING TO TAKE ADVANTAGE.
>>NOT YET.>>I THINK HARVICK IS PULLING
FOR GORDON NOW.>>HOW MANY TIMES CAN YOU SAY
THAT?>>I THINK HE IS RIGHT HERE.
>>CAUTION FLAG ON THE THREE BACK STRAIGHTAWAY.
NOT ENOUGH CARS INTO THE WALL, NOW BITS AND PIECES OF CARS ON
THE TRACK. THIS YELLOW FLAG, NUMBER NINE.
AND IT COMES OUT WITH 47 LAPS TO GO.
JAMIE McMURRAY’S CAR, THE BLACK CAR, CENTER OF THE SCREEN.
SHEDDING SOMETHING.>>MAYBE SOME OF THE INNER
PANELS. FROM EARLIER DAMAGE.
>>SO, CAUTION OUT AND AFTER JUST NINE LAPS OF GREEN FLAG
RACING, HERE WE GO AGAIN.>>WELL, THEY GIVE THEM AN EXTRA
SET OF TIRES, BUT THEY’RE GOING TO BE CLOSE AT THIS RATE, HAVING
A CAUTION ABOUT EVERY TEN LAPS.>>OPPORTUNITY FOR RYAN NEWMAN’S
TEAM THERE TO MAYBE MAKE UP A LITTLE BIT OF THE GROUND THEY
LOST.>>THEY’RE GOING TO HAVE TO
TIGHTEN IT UP ON PIT ROAD.>>DON’T BE SURPRISED IF THAT’S
THE TEAM THAT MAY NOT TRY TWO TIRES THIS TIME.
THEY MAY BE THE BEST AT MAKING THE MOST ON TWO TIRES IN THAT
SITUATION.>>THEY MAY NOT HAVE THE CAR TO
GET UP AND RACE WITH THE OTHER GUYS.
THEY HAVEN’T CHALLENGED TO PASS HAMLIN OR LOGANO OR HARVICK.
GOT TO DO SOMETHING, TRY TO GET IN FRONT OF THEM, SEE IF YOU CAN
HOLD IT. 45 TO GO, PIT ROAD OPEN.
HERE COMES NEWMAN.>>WELL, PIT ROAD HAS BEEN THE
PROBLEM TONIGHT. MINUS FIVE OVERALL.
BUT GOOD NEWS, THIS IS THE BEST THE CAR HAS BEEN TONIGHT.
JUST TIRES AND FUEL.>>THEY’RE GOING TO ADJUST
WHEELS, TRACK BAR, PRESSURE.>>AND A LITTLE HELP ON THE
SPLITTER. BARELY ON THE TAKEOFF, UNDER 14
SECONDS FOR HAMLIN. ALMOST CONTACT LEAVING PIT ROAD.
HAMLIN MAKES AN EVASIVE MOVE.>>LOOK AT NEWMAN’S PIT CREW.
THREE SPOTS GAINED.>>AND THE SCORING LINE AT THE
END OF PIT ROAD. BOY, THAT’S CLOSE.
I THINK GORDON GOT THEM.>>WOW.
>>>SO, RYAN NEWMAN’S TEAM GETS THE JOB DONE ON THE PIT STOP,
MOVING HIM UP TO FIFTH PLACE. LOGANO’S TEAM, TOUGH TIME TO
HAVE A BAD STOP.>>SEE HIM GOING TO THE RIGHT
SIDE, RIGHT THERE. LOST A LUG NUT.
>>FIFTH TO 11th PLACE FOR LOGANO.
>>WE WANT TO HAVE ANOTHER SHOT AT THIS.
>>42 LAPS TO GO LOGANO, WITH SOME GROUND TO MAKE UP.
HARVICK NEEDS TO CLEAR KESELOWSKI THERE.
>>HUGE RUN BY THE 2 CAR, ALL THE WAY TO THE BUMPER OF THE 11.
>>AFTER THE LITTLE TEXAS INCIDENT, I DON’T THINK HE’S
GOING TO CUT HIM MUCH SLACK HERE.
JEFF GORDON, THE LEADER, HAMLIN, SECOND.
KESELOWSKI AND HARVICK, FIGHTING FOR THIRD.
AND NEWMAN, RUNNING SEVENTH AFTER THE RESTART.
NOW, NEWMAN PICKS ONE BACK UP TO SIXTH.
LOGANO, IN NINTH.>>THESE RESTARTS HAVE BEEN A
PROBLEM FOR HARVICK, AFTER THE ONE TIME HE WAS ABLE TO GET TO
SECOND.>>CONVERSATIONS ABOUT MARKERS,
TEAMMATES, KESELOWSKI BEING LOGANO’S TEAMMATE, AND
ETIQUETTE.>>WELL, LOGANO, SAW AN
OPPORTUNITY, THINKING HIS CAR IS IN GOOD ENOUGH POSITION, I DON’T
THINK IT HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH A TEAMMATE.
AND IF IT’S HARVICK, HE’S NOT GOING TO GIVE HIM THE SPOT.
>>JUST A LITTLE FOUR-WIDE RACING FOR YOU THERE.
>>YUP.>>SAID IT YESTERDAY, I’LL SAY
IT AGAIN. I LOVE THIS RACETRACK.
>>YOU CAN’T HAVE A BETTER RACETRACK FOR THIS KIND OF A
FINALE.>>AND HARVICK IN THIRD.
HAMLIN IN SECOND. AND NEWMAN AND LOGANO IN SEVENTH
AND EIGHTH. WATCHING THE MEN AT WORK.
>>IF HE COMES UP SHORT, IT WON’T BE FOR LACK OF TRYING.
AND THAT CAR, JUST LOOKED LIKE HE’S GOT A FIFTH GEAR IN HIS
CAR. JUST FLEW BY HIM.
HE SURE GETS OFF THAT GAS HARD.>>I EXPECT TO SEE KEVIN
HARVICK, IT MAY BE GETTING CLOSE TO THE TIME WHERE HE MOVES UP,
AND TRIES WHAT HE CAN DO AT THIS HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY.
THAT’S THE HIGHEST WE’VE SEEN HIM ALL NIGHT.
>>SO, DENNY HAMLIN, RIGHT NOW, YOU’RE NOT WORRIED ABOUT JEFF
GORDON. YOU’RE RACING KEVIN HARVICK.
>>THAT 24 CAR IS NOTHING. IT’S ALL ABOUT THIS 4 CAR RIGHT
NOW.>>OTHER THINGS TO BRING INTO
THIS DISCUSSION, THAT LAST PIT STOP THEY MADE.
WITH THE ABILITY TO MAKE IT TO THE FINISH ON FUEL, IF IT WERE
TO RUN THAT FAR ON FUEL, THE HANDLING AND TIRES COULD GIVE
OUT. THAT WOULD MAKE THE HANDLING
TOUGH.>>AND WHAT THEY’RE DOING RIGHT
NOW, HOW HARD THEY’RE DRIVING THE CARS, THAT COULD AFFECT WHAT
THEY HAVE LEFT AFTER A 40-LAP RUN.
BUT YOU NEED TO GO.>>THEY’RE NOT SAVING ANYTHING.
>>NO.>>JEFF GORDON, A SECOND AND A
HALF CLEAR OF THESE TWO. CONTINUING TO POST SOME SOLID
LAP TIMES IN THAT 24.>>AND HARVICK AND HAMLIN, JUST
RIGHT THERE AT THEM. JUST A COUPLE OF HUNDREDTHS OF A
SECOND BETWEEN THEM. 50 MILES LEFT IN THE SEASON, TO
DECIDE A CHAMPION. IT’S BEEN TREMENDOUS SO FAR
THROUGH 350 OF THEM. WHO KNOWS HOW THE FINAL 50 ARE
GOING TO TURN OUT. GORDON, IS THE LEADER.
HAMLIN LEADING THE CHAMPIONSHIP, BARELY.
NASCAR NONSTOP, PRESENTED BY GOOD YEAR.
>>>SEE THE CAUTION FLAG OUT, AND THE PACE CAR, A HARD CRASH
FOR A.J. ALLMENDINGER. COMING OUT OF TURN NUMBER ONE.
THIS DEVELOPED IN A HURRY. CHECK IT OUT.
>>WATCH THIS. MAKES A LEFT, LIKES LIKE THE
TIRE JUST BLEW OUT.>>I HEARD ON THE RADIO, HE MAY
HAVE HAD SOME CONTACT WITH ANOTHER CAR EARLIER.
COULD HAVE CAUSED THE TIRE TO GO DOWN.
>>TOUGH HIT FOR ALLMENDINGER.>>A.J. WAS RIGHT THERE,
BATTLING TO GET INSIDE THE TOP TEN.
HE WAS IN 11th, JUST A FEW POINTS BEHIND THE 18 OF KYLE
BUSCH.>>WELL, A SEASON THAT FEATURED
A HIGH OF A WIN AT WATKINS GLEN FOR ALLMENDINGER ENDS WITH BEING
LOADED ON TO A TRUCK. AND PIT ROAD IS CLOSED BECAUSE
OF WHERE THE CAR SITS. SO, TIME FOR US TO CHECK OUT THE
DRIVER WHO’S LED THE MOST LAPS TONIGHT.
BROUGHT TO YOU BY SPRINT. THAT WOULD BE JEFF GORDON, WHO
HAS LED 146, NOW 147 LAPS.>>JEFF GORDON HAS LED MORE LAPS
THIS YEAR THAN HE DID THE LAST TWO YEARS COMBINED.
>>CERTAINLY LOOKING LIKE A NIGHT OF AFTER CELEBRATION IN
VICTORY LANE, POSSIBLY, A NIGHT OF WHAT-IFS.
>>PIT ROAD GOING TO BE OPEN HERE.
CAN I JUST TAKE A MINUTE AND SHARE SOMETHING WITH YOU FOLKS
WATCHING AT HOME? A TIP OF THE CAP TO THE 150 OR
SO ENORMOUSLY HARD-WORKING MEN AND WOMEN THAT WORK 35 WEEKS A
YEAR TO WORK ON THESE TELECASTS. WE JUST WANTED YOU TO KNOW FROM
US, IT’S BEEN A BLAST. WE THANK YOU AT HOME FOR SHARING
WITH US.>>OUR CREW IS THE BEST IN THE
BUSINESS.>>JUST UNBELIEVABLE, THE
TALENTED PEOPLE WE HAVE.>>AND NOW WE’RE GOING FOR THE
BIG FINISH.>>THAT’S RIGHT.
A LOT STILL TO BE DECIDED. PIT ROAD OPEN.
AND THE LEAD CARS HERE. WHO GAINS?
WHO LOSES? WILL ANYBODY MAKE A STRATEGY
PLAY. HERE COMES NEWMAN.
>>WELL, THEY NEED ANOTHER GOOD ONE HERE.
RYAN SAYS IT’S GOOD, JUST FOUR TIRES.
>>AND LOGANO’S CREW, FOUR TIRES.
>>AND THEY SAID IT COULD BE A $10 MILLION PIT STOP.
12.4 SECONDS, HAMLIN HUSTLING BUT GORDON WILL GET THERE FIRST.
>>AND THE INTENSITY OF THOSE PIT STOPS, LOOK AT THE INTENSITY
OFF PIT ROAD. AND STILL, HAMLIN AND GORDON,
BUMPER TO BUMPER. THOSE PIT CREWS ARE DOING A JOB.
LOOK AT THE TRAFFIC JAM COMING TO THE END OF PIT ROAD.
>>WE TALKED ABOUT THE DRIVERS STEPPING UP.
HOW ABOUT THE PIT CREWS, THEY HAD TO DO IT.
JUST PUTTING OUT NUMBERS THAT ARE AMAZING.
AND THE FRONT TIRE CHANGER. YOU CAN TELL, THEY’RE INTO IT.
>>NO DRIVER DOES THIS ALONE. IT TAKES A STRONG CREW OF PEOPLE
TO ENGINEER, PUT TOGETHER THE RACE CARS.
SO FINELY TUNED AND ASSEMBLED. AND IT TAKES A STRONG CREW ON
PIT ROAD TO GET IT DONE. AND THEY’VE ALL DEMONSTRATED
NASCAR’S FINEST TONIGHT.>>AND EVERYONE WONDERED HOW IT
WOULD TURN OUT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SEASON.
HOW WOULD IT ACTUALLY TURN OUT ON THE RACETRACK, FOR 400 MILES.
I DON’T KNOW THAT WE COULD HAVE POSSIBLY ASKED FOR A MORE
EXCITING AFTERNOON OF RACING, ALL THE DRIVERS IN IT STILL.
>>INSIDE OF 30 LAPS TO GO, AND WE HAVE NO IDEA OF WHO’S GOING
TO WIN.>>HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR
ADJUSTMENTS IN THE CLOSING LAPS?>>EVERYBODY HAS DONE A GOOD
JOB. THESE RESTARTS HAVE HURT, WE
NEED TO BE ON THE OUTSIDE LANE AND HAVE TO MOMENTUM.
EVERYBODY HAS DONE THE BEST JOB THEY CAN DO SO FAR, WE’LL SEE
HOW IT PLAYS OUT, AND YOU NEVER KNOW.
WE’LL SEE WHAT HAPPENS.>>HOW HAS THIS WHOLE RACE BEEN
LIKE FOR YOU? IT’S THE FIRST TIME YOU’VE BEEN
IN THIS CHAMPIONSHIP HUNT.>>WELL, IT’S LIKE ANY OTHER
RACE. JUST DO THE BEST JOB YOU CAN.
AND DON’T FOCUS ON ANYTHING OTHER THAN THAT.
WE CAME TO WIN THE RACE, AND THAT’S WHAT WE’VE TRIED TO DO.
>>AND YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THIS RACE CAR.
DO YOU HAVE IT WHERE HE CAN CONTEND IN THE FINAL 30 LAPS?
>>I FEEL GOOD ABOUT THE PROGRESS TODAY.
WE’RE STEPPING UP AND THINK HE CAN TAKE IT.
>>AND THREE DRIVERS TAKING WAVE WAIVER ROUTES TO GET ON THE LEAD
LAP. THAT WILL GIVE US 29 CARS ON THE
LEAD LAP. AND DOUBLING UP WITH JEFF
GORDON, THE RACE LEADER, AND DENNY HAMLIN TO HIS RIGHT SIDE.
>>AND YOU TOLD ME THIS MORNING — DOES HE HAVE ENOUGH
TO WIN THIS CHAMPIONSHIP?>>WELL, HE’S DOING AN AWESOME
JOB TO KEEP US UP FRONT. WE’VE BEEN FAST ALL NIGHT.
WE NEED A GOOD RESTART HERE.>>AND TODD GORDON, YOUR DRIVER
IS DOWN. I SUSPECT YOU DON’T BELIEVE HE’S
OUT.>>NO, HE’S STILL TOP TEN.
HE’S AWESOME AT RESTARTS. HE’S TAKING A STAB AT IT.
SEE WHERE THIS CAUTION GOES. AND IF HE COMES IN FOR ONE,
WE’LL GET SOME MORE TIRES ON IT.>>WE’LL WATCH FOR LOGANO TO TRY
TO MAKE IT THREE-WIDE, MAYBE ON THE OUTSIDE LANE.
AS HE RUNS WITH 25 LAPS TO GO. GORDON LEADING ON THE RESTART.
>>HAMLIN, TROUBLE GETTING GOING.
HARVICK SHOOTS THE MIDDLE GAP. THAT’S THE SPOT THAT MATTERS TO
HARVICK AND HAMLIN.>>ALL FOUR CONTENDERS,
NOSE-TO-TAIL ON THE RACETRACK. JIMMIE JOHNSON, AFTER LOGANO FOR
SIXTH PLACE.>>A HUGE PASS BY KEVIN HARVICK.
>>HE’S BEEN BEHIND HARVICK — AHEAD OF HARVICK FOR 99 STRAIGHT
LAPS THERE. THINKING HE HAS THINGS WELL IN
HAND. BUT YOU JUST NEVER KNOW.
WE SAID IT’S GOING TO COME DOWN TO A RESTART, PROBABLY.
HARVICK HAS IT NOW.>>SO KEVIN PUTTING A GAP ON THE
OTHERS. BUT THE WAY THIS RACE HAS GONE,
FREQUENT CAUTION FLAGS. NEWMAN, SNEAKING AROUND HAMLIN.
>>HE’S NOT GOING TO AWAY.>>NOT GOING TO GIVE UP.
>>HARVICK’S NEXT CHALLENGE IS GOING TO BE, IF HE GETS TO THE 2
CAR, CAN HE MAKE PROGRESS THERE, OR WILL THAT IMPEDE HIM?
THE OTHER CARS ARE NOT VERY FAR BEHIND.
>>JOHNSON, STILL THERE. LOOKING FOR POSITIONS.
AS IS HIS JOB IN THE 48 CAR.>>NEWMAN, TRYING TO INSIDE NOW.
IF HE CAN GET BEHIND HAMLIN THAT WAY.
NOT QUITE ENOUGH STEAM OFF THAT CORNER.
>>ALL THREE GUYS, HOPING THERE’S ANOTHER YELLOW FLAG.
BECAUSE HARVICK, ALMOST TWO SECONDS FROM HARVICK BACK TO
HAMLIN.>>KEVIN HARVICK NOW, DRIVING
HARDER DOWN INTO THE CORNER THAN I’VE SEEN HIM THIS ENTIRE RACE.
WE’LL HAVE TO SEE IF THAT’S SOMETHING THAT HURTS HIM LATER
IN THE RUN. THIS MAY NOT BE A LONG RUN, BUT
THAT RIGHT FRONT TIRE COULD BECOME AN ISSUE FOR HIM.
>>OH, CAUTION! DEBRIS, TURN NUMBER TWO.
I THINK WE JUST SAW IT. AND SO, THERE’S WHAT HAMLIN
NEEDED TO CATCH BACK UP TO HARVICK.
AND THE LAST THING THAT FOLKS IN RED WANTED TO SEE.
BUT IT WAS THERE ON THE RACETRACK.
SO NOW, FIVE LAPS OF RACING.>>AND ONLY 20 TO GO.
THIS IS DEFINITELY AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE 22 AND 31.
THEY HAVE TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT.
BUT YOU GOT TO COME TO PIT ROAD.>>YEAH.
>>BUT YOU GOT TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT.
YOU HAVE TO THINK ABOUT TWO TIRES.
IF IT’S EVER GOING TO WORK, IT’S NOW.
AND YOU GOT TO BELIEVE THE OTHER CARS ARE GOING TO TRY TO GET
FOUR TIRES.>>I’M BELIEVING THAT THE ACID
LEVEL IN THE OLD STOMACH JUMPED UP A LITTLE BIT.
>>MICHAEL McDONALD, FREE PASS. AND ALL THE OTHER GUYS THAT
AREN’T RACING FOR A CHAMPIONSHIP, TRYING TO STEAL A
WIN? STRATEGY OPTION HERE, TOO.
>>THAT’S A HUGE OPTION THEY COULD TAKE, AND SHOULD, A LOT OF
THEM.>>KENSETH, IN EIGHTH.
EARNHARDT JR. IN 11th.>>LOOKS LIKE HAMLIN STAYED OUT.
GORDON AND HAMLIN STAYED OUT. WE’LL SEE HOW MANY MORE STAY
WITH THEM. NOT MANY.
>>AND THE 31 TEAM HAS GAINED NEWMAN FOUR SPOTS THE LAST TWO
TIMES IN THE PIT. FOUR TIRES AND A PIECE OF TAPE
ON THE GRILL.>>AND WORKING TO THE LEFT, FOUR
TIRES.>>AND THEY TAKE THE COMMAND,
COMES DOWN OFF THE JACK. 22 OFF THE JACK ON THE LEFT
SIDE. THEY’RE LOSING A LOT OF TIME ON
PIT ROAD RIGHT NOW. STILL TRYING TO GET THE CAR OFF
THE GROUND. THE CREW TRYING DESPERATELY TO
GET THE CAR BACK ON THE JACK. AND FINALLY, GETTING THE TIRES
ON. DISASTER FOR THE 22.
>>JACK IT UP!>>NOW, WHEN IT COUNTS THE MOST,
PROBLEMS ON PIT ROAD FOR LOGANO’S TEAM.
HE’S GOING TO BE AT THE BACK OF ALL THE CARS NOW, FROM SIXTH
PLACE.>>AND IS THAT DENNY HAMLIN’S
CALL TO STAY OUT THERE? THAT COULD BE THE WINNING MOVE.
>>LOOK AT THAT. BANGING ON THE STEERING WHEEL.
>>I HAVE THE QUESTION THE DECISION TO TAKE FOUR TIRES
THERE.>>THE OTHER TEAM, THEY GOT TWO
AND BACKED OUT.>>HARVICK HAS A LOT OF CARS
BETWEEN HIM AND HAMLIN AND THE 31.
>>SO, BIG PLAYS BETWEEN THE OTHER CARS AND THIS 11 TEAM.
>>THOUGHT WE COULD HAVE BEAT THEM OFF PIT ROAD.
>>SO, HAMLIN, THE SECOND PLACE CAR, AND NEWMAN IS THE FOURTH
PLACE CAR. GORDON AND VICKERS DIDN’T PIT.
>>I TOLD YOU, HE WAS THE BEST I RACED WITH ON TWO TIRES ON THESE
LATE RESTARTS.>>I WAS WITH LUKE LAMBERT ON
THIS DECISION TO TAKE TWO TIRES. GOOD CALL, PUTS THEM IN
POSITION. GIVING THEM A CHANCE.
>>I LOVE IT.>>AND BECAUSE OF TWO PEOPLE
THAT JUST TOOK TWO TIRES, HARVICK 12th.
AND LOGANO, 29th.>>HUGE RESTART FOR HAMLIN.
IF HE CAN GET IN CLEAN AIR, COULD BE HIS CHAMPIONSHIP MOVE.
>>16 LAPS TO GO. WAVES OFF THE RESTART.
THREE WIDE OFF THE BACKFIELD.>>EVERYBODY IS ARGUING OVER
WHERE THEY’RE GOING TO START. IT MEANS A LOT OF EVERYBODY.
EVERYBODY TRYING TO GET THE BEST THEY CAN.
>>LOOK AT THE BACK.>>WHAT A TWIST OF PLOT ON A PIT
STOP THAT CAME WITH 18 LAPS TO GO IN THIS ONE.
LOGANO’S TEAM WITH TROUBLES ON THE LEFT SIDE JACK.
>>HE FELL. THE JACK JUST CAME OFF.
THAT’S DISASTROUS. TALK ABOUT HOW MUCH PRESSURE THE
PIT CREWS ARE UNDER. WE FELT LIKE SOMEBODY — THIS IS
THE KIND OF THING YOU CAN OVERCOME EARLY IN THE RACE, BUT
NOT NOW.>>REMEMBER BACK IN 2011, IT WAS
A GUTSY CALL THAT ALLOWED TONY STEWART TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP.
HE SAID, I KEPT MY NOTES. AND HE SAID, NO, NO, NO, STAY
OUT. HE MADE THE CALL TO STAY OUT,
AND MAYBE THAT WILL WIN THEM A CHAMPIONSHIP.
>>THIS WAS WHEN PIT ROAD WAS OPEN.
BUT BACK OUT, WELL CLEAR OF THE COMMITMENT CONE, OF THE PLACE
WHERE YOU HAVE TO BE. 15 LAPS TO GO IN THE
CHAMPIONSHIP. CAN DENNY HAMLIN HOLD ON?
CAN RYAN NEWMAN GET PAST HIM? AND WHAT ABOUT HARVICK AND
LOGANO? FOUR WIDE ON TURN TWO.
HAMLIN, FOR THE RACE LEAD!>>I REALLY DON’T THINK HARVICK
HAS TIME TO PASS THESE CARS WITHOUT A CAUTION.
EVEN WITH THE FOUR TIRES.>>HE’S RIGHT THERE.
>>NEWMAN MIGHT JUST DO THAT.>>DON’T WANT TO TAKE OUR EYES
OFF THIS. BUT WITH THE WAY THEY’RE RACING
AT THE BACK OF THE PACK, WE MAY JUST GET THAT CAUTION.
GORDON.>>LOOKS LIKE HE MAY BE IN A
LITTLE BIT OF TROUBLE.>>CARS INTO THE WALL.
>>THAT COULD BE THE BREAK THAT HARVICK NEEDS.
>>ALEX BOWMAN AND J.J. YELEY. AND THE YELLOW IS OUT WITH 13
LAPS TO GO.>>I CAN’T IMAGINE WHAT IT’S
LIKE INSIDE THE CARS.>>WELL, MY HEART IS BREAKING.
THIS IS SOMETHING. OH, DEAR.
>>BIG BREAK FOR JOEY LOGANO. IF SOME OF THOSE OTHERS SHOULD
HAPPEN TO PIT THERE. HE COULD STAY OUT AND MAKE UP
POSITION. THIS IS TWO WEEKS IN A ROW, HE
WAS PUT BACK IN TEXAS, AND IN PHOENIX, HAD TO BATTLE BACK FROM
A LAP DOWN. AND FOR THIS TO HAPPEN AT THIS
POINT IN THE RACE.>>HOW ABOUT IF YOU’RE DENNY
HAMLIN, GOT AROUND JEFF GORDON, AND NOW, HERE THEY ALL ARE, YOU
HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN AND GET IT JUST RIGHT.
AND THE RESTART BEFORE, YOU SPUN YOUR TIRES, AND LOOKED LIKE THE
CHAMPIONSHIP WAS LOST.>>AND WHERE DO YOU START?
DO I WANT TO KEEP THE GUYS I’M BATTLING FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP,
NEWMAN, OR KESELOWSKI, FROM THE HIGH SIDE, IN THE FOUR SPOT.
PROBABLY NOT GOING TO GET A BIG ASSIST FROM HIM.
>>THAT’S WHY IT TAKES A TON OF CHARACTER TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP.
>>A BUNCH OF CHARACTERS HERE, ALL RIGHT.
>>THAT’S FOR SURE.>>SO, THIS, THE 12th CAUTION OF
THIS RACE. THE TRACK RECORD FOR CAUTIONS IS
14. THAT CAME IN THE FIRST RACE, THE
SECOND RACE AFTER THE TRACK WAS RECONFIGURED IN 2004.
SO, WE’RE NOT QUITE THERE YET. BUT IT’S NOT OUT OF THE
QUESTION. JEFF GORDON, HEADING TO PIT
ROAD. FROM SECOND PLACE.
AND FEW OTHERS COMING IN. LOGANO IS GOING TO PIT.
>>THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR NEWMAN.
>>OKAY RIGHT HERE.>>FOUR TIRES.
FIVE, FOUR.>>THEY WERE COUNTING CARS.
WHEN THE NUMBER ROSE TO FOUR, THEY KNEW THEY COULD COME DOWN
AND PUT ON FRESH TIRES, AND LOOSEN UP THE CAR.
AND THE LAST THREE WEEKS, WE’LL SEE IF JOEY CAN PICK UP SOME
SPOTS. BUT I DON’T THINK IT WILL BE
ENOUGH.>>IT’S GOING TO BE HARD.
BUT DISASTER COULD HAPPEN AT THE FRONT OF THE PACK AND THE WHOLE
PICTURE COULD CHANGE.>>YEAH, BUT I DON’T LIKE HIS
CHANCES.>>SO, RYAN NEWMAN RUNNING
SECOND TO DENNY HAMLIN, WHO LEADS THE RACE, AND THE
CHAMPIONSHIP COMING TO TEN LAPS TO GO IN THE SEASON.
>>WHAT LINE DO YOU THINK IS THE BEST?
>>THE 31 IS GOING TO BE IN THIRD.
SO, IT’S UP TO YOU, AS FAR AS THE OLD TIRE RESTART RIGHT
THERE.>>I TELL YOU WHAT, I DON’T
THINK I WOULD GIVE NEWMAN THAT INSIDE LANE.
HE’S BEEN SO STRONG DRIVING IN THE CORNER.
>>THAT CONVERSATION CAME BEFORE GORDON HIT HIM.
AND AS YOU SAID, WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT THE ENTIRE RACE, ABOUT THE
31, HIS ABILITY TO DRIVE IT IN THE CORNER BETTER THAN ANYBODY
ELSE.>>SO, DOUBLED UP FOR THE
RESTART. GOING TO COME WITH NINE LAPS TO
GO. GORDON GOING FROM SECOND PLACE
TO 24th. LOGANO, 29th.
HARVICK, UP TO SIXTH. DON’T COUNT HARVICK OUT, EITHER.
HE’S ONLY TWO ROWS BEHIND THE TWO GUYS LEADING THE RACE.
>>YOU GUYS WERE TALKING ABOUT NEWMAN AND THE INSIDE.
THEY TOLD ME TODAY THEY WORKED ON THE INSIDE LANE IN PRACTICE.
THEY FELT THAT’S WHERE THE CHAMPIONSHIP WAS GOING TO BE
WON. DIVING ON THE INSIDE AND MAKING
A PASS COME DOWN TO THAT. CERTAINLY, THIS IS SOMETHING
THEY’VE WORKED ON ALL WEEKEND.>>HE’S GETTING READY.
>>READY TO GO. SO, HAMLIN, THE RACE LEADER, HAS
CHOSEN THE OUTSIDE LANE. NEWMAN TO THE INSIDE.
AND HARVICK, HE’S GOING TO BE IN A HURRY.
>>I THINK HE’S IN A SEAT WITH THE TIRES HE HAS VERSUS THE
OTHERS, THAT MAY PUT HIM IN A POSITION TO MAKE A CHARGE IN THE
LAST NINE LAPS.>>NEWMAN, TROUBLING GETTING
GOING. LARSON, THREE TO THE OUTSIDE.
HAMLIN HAS TROUBLE. McMURRAY TO THE OUTSIDE.
HERE COMES HARVICK. HARVICK, TO SECOND.
THREE OF THE FOUR CHAMPIONSHIP CONTENDERS, ONE, TWO, THREE,
WITH EIGHT LAPS TO GO.>>HAMLIN’S WORST CASE SCENARIO.
>>TROUBLE, A CAR IN FLAMES.>>STAYING GREEN.
>>THERE HE GOES. HARVICK, GOING TO RUN.
>>HE’S WIDE. HARVICK LEADS.
THE CAR THAT IS TROUBLE, TRYING TO GET BACK AROUND TO PIT ROAD,
AND TRYING TO FINISH THE RACE. SECOND PLACE, NEWMAN ON HAMLIN.
THE 32 OF JOEY GATES, AT THE BOTTOM OF THE RACETRACK.
HERE COMES NEWMAN, TRYING TO TAKE THE SECOND SPOT.
CAUTION, DEBRIS FROM THE 32.>>IT’S GOING TO BE CRITICAL TO
SEE WHERE THE 31 WAS WHEN THE CAUTION CAME OUT.
>>MIDDLE OF THE RACETRACK. ONE AND TWO.
>>THE GRILL PIECE FROM THE FRONT OF THE FORD.
>>DID I SAY JOEY GATES FOR THE 32?
IT’S BLAKE KOCH FOR THIS RACE. YOU’LL FORGIVE ME FOR BEING
CAUGHT UP IN THE MOMENT.>>AND THE TWO CARS, RUNNING ONE
AND TWO, THEY SWITCHED COMPANIES THIS YEAR.
HARVICK, MOVING OVER, AND STEWART, TO RICHARD CHILDRESS
RACING.>>AND THE FOUR-LAP BURST OF
RACING, HARVICK FROM SIXTH TO FIRST.
HAMLIN, GATHERING IT UP, KEEPING THE LEAD, THEN GOING FOR A BIG
SLIDE IN TURN FOUR, AND COULDN’T HOLD HARVICK OFF.
>>WELL, HE CAN’T AFFORD TO COME TO PIT ROAD.
ALL HE CAN HOPE TO DO IS GET A GREAT RESTART AND GET HIMSELF IN
A POSITION TO WIN THIS. WATCH DENNY HAMLIN GO FOR THE
BIG POWER SLIDE. HARVICK JUST HAD IT RUNNING.
>>IT WASN’T ANYTHING THAT DENNY DID WRONG.
IT’S JUST A PRODUCT OF WHAT HE HAD TO RACE WITH, AND TRYING TO
KEEP THE LEAD.>>SO, HARVICK LEADS.
NEWMAN AND HAMLIN, TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO GET AROUND
HIM.>>MAYBE THEY GET TUSSLED UP.
I DON’T KNOW. CAN’T GO ANY FASTER.
>>I DON’T THINK ANY OF THEM CAN DRIVE ANY HARDER.
DON’T COUNT DENNY OUT OF THIS YET.
OR NEWMAN. I KEEP SAYING THIS.
>>HE JUST WON’T GO AWAY. HE’S RIGHT THERE.
>>J.J. YELEY’S CAR, PUSHED IN BEHIND THE BARRIERS.
TURNED OFF THE RACETRACK, TRYING TO KEEP THE CAUTION FROM BEING
BROUGHT OUT. NOW, A RESTART WITH THREE TO GO.
>>AND KESELOWSKI, TRYING TO WIN THE RACE.
HE’S NOT GOING TO AFFECT ANYBODY FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP.
BUT HE CAN MAKE THIS THREE WIDE AND JAM IT UP.
>>THAT’S A LOT.>>ESPECIALLY WITH ALL THE
THINGS WE’VE SEEN HAPPEN OVER THE LAST FEW WEEKS.
>>SOME BAD BLOOD.>>HARVICK, NEWMAN, HAMLIN.
AND JEFF GORDON, UP TO 13th PLACE AFTER RESTARTING IN 29th
AFTER PIT STOPS A MOMENT AGO.>>CAN’T SPIN THE TIRES.
>>THREE LAPS TO GO ON THIS ONE. HAMLIN, HAS TROUBLE.
NEWMAN, TO THE INSIDE OF HARVICK.
HARVICK, STAYING IN. THAT MIGHT BE THE WINNING MOVE.
>>SET YOUR MARK HERE.>>LOOK AT NEWMAN, DIVING OFF IN
THE CORNER.>>HE SHOWED US LAST WEEK, HE
WAS CAPABLE OF DOING GREAT THINGS WITH A LOT ON THE LINE.
TWO LAPS LEFT TO GO.>>NEWMAN, GIVING IT ALL HE’S
GOT RIGHT NOW.>>WATCH HIM DIVE DOWN INTO TURN
THREE AFTER THE 4 CAR.>>COMING TO THE WHITE FLAG.
ONE LAP LEFT TO GO IN THE SEASON.
WE’RE IN THE LAST LAP.>>ONE MORE.
>>IF THE CAUTION COMES OUT, THE RACE IS OVER.
NEWMAN, TRYING TO STAY WITH HARVICK.
TRYING TO FIND A WAY AROUND HIM. TWO MORE CORNERS TO GO TO A
CHAMPIONSHIP FOR KEVIN HARVICK! HE’S GOING TO DO IT!
HE’S GOING WIN THE RACE, AND THE NASCAR SPRINT CUP CHAMPIONSHIP.
CALIFORNIA’S KEVIN HARVICK DOES IT!
>>HOLY COW!>>YOU ARE THE 2014 SPRINT CUP

>>AMAZING SEASON, KEVIN HARVICK.
>>AND HE WAS ROOKIE OF THE YEAR IN THIS SERIES.
IT’S BEEN A LONG YEAR FOR YOU. WHAT DOES THIS FINALLY MEAN FOR
YOU?>>IT’S SURREAL.
TO MAKE THE CHANGE HE DID, TO COME FIGHT FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP,
WITH ONE OF THE BEST GROUPS OF GUYS I’VE EVER BEEN AROUND.
THEY DESERVE THIS.>>WHAT WAS IT LIKE IN THE
OFF-SEASON, KNOWING YOU WERE GOING TO START OVER FROM
SCRATCH?>>WELL, KEVIN, HE WANTED THAT
CHALLENGED AND WITH EVERYONE BELIEVING IN HIM, IT WAS
AMAZING.>>WHAT DID THE LAST LAP FEEL
LIKE FOR YOU?>>ONE OF THE LONGEST IN MY

YOU.>>KEVIN HARVICK WINS THE RACE
TO WIN THE NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP.
NEWMAN, FINISHING SECOND. HE WAS THE UNDERDOG.
KEPT TELLING EVERYONE, DON’T COUNT US OUT.
YOU HAD A SHOT. WHAT MADE THE DIFFERENCE IN THE
FINAL THREE LAPS.>>RESTARTS HAVEN’T BEEN MY
STRONG SUIT. THAT WAS A LITTLE BIT TOUGH.
I THOUGHT ABOUT HAULING IN IT THERE WIDE OPEN, BUT I WOULDN’T
WANT HIM TO DO IT WITH ME. I WANT TO THANK CHEVROLET AND
SPRINT. IT’S BEEN AN AMAZING YEAR.
>>WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU PERSONALLY, YOU’VE WON DAYTONA,
INDIANAPOLIS, DIDN’T GET THE CHAMPIONSHIP TODAY.
BUT WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE IN THIS POSITION IN YOUR
FIRST YEAR WITH RCR?>>WELL, IT SAYS A LOT ABOUT THE
ORGANIZATION. EVERYBODY DID A GREAT JOB.
IT’S BEEN A WHOLE LOT OF FUN. WE WEREN’T VICTORIOUS, BUT STILL
A LOT OF FUN. REALLY APPRECIATE ALL THE GUYS’
HARD WORK.>>A CHAMPIONSHIP-WORTHY
PERFORMANCE, BUT JUST A LITTLE BIT SHORT TODAY.
ALLEN?>>RICHARD CHILDRESS THERE WITH
RYAN NEWMAN AND KEVIN HARVICK. WAITING FOR THE STAGE TO BE
ASSEMBLED. A TITLE-WINNING MOMENT.
WINNING THE RACE, TO TAKE THE CHAMPIONSHIP.

I JUST REALLY DON’T KNOW WHAT TO AND I APPRECIATE EVERYBODY.
FOR EVERYTHING THAT THEY PUT INTO THE TEAM.
IT CAME DOWN TO A PIT CALL, AND I WAS LIKE, MAN, WE’RE IN BIG
TROUBLE HERE. AND RODNEY AND ALL THE GUYS THAT
PUT TOGETHER A TEAM, JUST DONE AN AMAZING JOB.
MOBIL 1, GOT TO GIVE RODNEY A HUG.
>>OH, HEY.>>AS WE GET A SHOWER OF SUDS.
TAKE US THROUGH THAT LAST RESTART.
YOU KNEW THAT RYAN NEWMAN WOULD DO.
WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?>>JUST HOLDING THE PEDAL DOWN,
AND I KNEW OUR CAR WOULD –>>THERE IS HIS 2-YEAR-OLD SON.
AND WIFE. LET’S GO TO THE IMPORTANT STUFF.
YOU PUT YOUR SON IN THE CAR EACH WEEK AS YOUR GOOD LUCK CHARM
BEFORE THE RACE. WHAT DOES IT MEAN AS A DAD TO
SHARE THIS CHAMPIONSHIP WITH THIS YOUNG MAN.
>>I’M JUST REALLY EXCITED. IT’S REALLY SPECIAL FOR
EVERYBODY. AND I JUST — I’M GLAD YOU’RE
AWAY. ARE YOU HAPPY TO BE AWAKE?
CAN YOU SAY, I BELIEVE DADDY WON?
SAY IT. REALLY HAPPY.
IT’S BEEN 13 YEARS AND GOT TO THANK TONY STEWART AND JIMMIE
JOHNSON, HELPING ME AND CALLING ME ON THE PHONE TO TELL ME WHAT
I NEED TO DO TODAY. I WANT TO THANK SPRINT, THE
FANS, WE APPRECIATE YOU COMING HERE TODAY.
THIS NEW FORMAT HAS BEEN SO STRESSFUL.
THE RACING HAS BEEN PHENOMENAL. I’M GOING TO SLEEP FOR A WEEK.
>>AND YOUR CAR OWNERS, YOU TOOK A LEAP OF FAITH, AND TONY
STEWART SAID I’LL DO EVERYTHING I CAN TO WIN YOU A CHAMPIONSHIP.
>>WELL, THEY JUST GAVE US ALL THE RESOURCES I NEED.
WE NEVER TALKED ABOUT MONEY OR ANYTHING FINANCIAL.
JUST GO GET WHAT YOU NEED TO BUILD A TEAM.
WE BUILT ALL-NEW RACE CARS, TRUCKS, TRAILERS, ALL-NEW
PEOPLE. AND THE FORMAT HELPED US BUILD
AS A TEAM. AND IT’S LED TO THIS MOMENT
RIGHT HERE. AND TO CLOSE THAT DEAL OUT AT
THE END OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP WAS AWESOME.
>>TIME TO CELEBRATE. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, HERE HE
IS, YOUR 2014 NASCAR SPRINT CUP CHAMPION, KEVIN HARVICK.
[ CHEERS AND APPLAUSE ]>>TONY STEWART.

SEASON-ENDING RACE OF THE SPRINT CUP CHAMPIONSHIP.
THE TROPHY PRESENTATION, STILL TO COME.
WHAT A NIGHT!>>>TONY STEWART.
CO-OWNER OF STEWART-HAAS RACING. WITH HIS CHAMPION, KEVIN
HARVICK. NOW THEY BOTH KNOW WHAT IT’S
LIKE TO BE A CHAMPION OF THIS SPORT.
WHILE KEVIN GETS READY FOR THE TROPHY PRESENTATION, LET’S GO TO
DAVE.>>SEVENTH PLACE FOR DENNY
HAMLIN, YOUR THOUGHTS?>>WELL, IT WASN’T FOR A LACK OF
TRYING. I THOUGHT WE HAD A BETTER CAR
THAN THOSE GUYS. I HAD A BAD RESTART.
AND LOST POSITION TO THE FOUR. WE MADE A DECISION TO STAY OUT
THERE ON TIRES. SOMETHING TO GET THE POSITION
BACK I LOST ON THE RESTART. JUST DIDN’T WORK OUT FOR US.
WITH ALL THE CAUTIONS, THE GUYS CLOSED BACK UP.
JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS, SOMETIMES THE CAUTIONS HELP,
SOMETIMES THEY DON’T. REALLY IMPROVED ON THE SHORT RUN
ALL DAY. I CAN’T THANK FEDEX, TOYOTA,
SPRINT ENOUGH AND THE FANS FOR A GREAT YEAR.
WE GAVE OURSELVES A SHOT. THINGS WERE LOOKING GOOD FOR US.
BUT THE CAUTIONS JUST REALLY, REALLY HURT US.
>>WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO LIVE THAT TONIGHT.
WE WERE ON THE EDGES OF OUR SEATS.
WHAT WAS IT LIKE FOR YOU?>>WELL, WE HAD THE FINAL FOUR
IN THE FINAL BRACKET. IT’S JUST UNFORTUNATE, AND PROUD
TO BE IN THIS POSITION, AND HAPPY FOR ALL OF OUR TEAM TO
HAVE A SHOT AT IT. AND LEADING THIS THING WITH A
FEW LAPS TO GO. JUST COULDN’T OVERCOME THE
TIRES, AND THAT WAS ALL SHE WROTE.
>>GREAT SEASON FOR DENNY HAMLIN.
>>AND A DIFFICULT FINISH FOR JOEY LOGANO.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE WAY IT UNRAVELED DOWN THE STRETCH?
>>WELL, WE HAD A GREAT SEASON DOWN TO THE LAST 20 LAPS.
I MADE A MISTAKE EARLY, HIT THE WALL, AND LOOK A LOT OF THE
SHAPE OUT OF THE RIGHT SIDE. I RECOVER FROM IT, GET BACK UP
TO FOURTH OR FIFTH. RIGHT WHERE THE OTHER CONTENDERS
WHERE. RIGHT BACK WHERE WE NEEDED TO
BE. AND ON PIT ROAD, UNFORTUNATELY,
WHAT WAS A GREAT SEASON, STILL WAS A GREAT SEASON, GOT TAKEN
AWAY BY ONE PIT STOP, UNFORTUNATELY.
WE HAD A GREAT SEASON, STILL SCORED THE MOST POINTS HERE, BUT
CONSISTENCY DOESN’T MAY ANYMORE. WE KNEW THAT COMING IN.
IT’S JUST THE WAY THE POINTS PLAY OUT NOW.
OTHER CARS CAN BE FAST, BUT NOT CONSISTENT.
BE UNFORTUNATELY, WE JUST DIDN’T EXECUTE PERFECTLY TONIGHT.
>>SO STRONG DURING THE COURSE OF THE SEASON.
GET INTO THE CHASE, IT COMES DOWN TO ONE RACE.
CAN YOU PUT IN PERSPECTIVE HOW DIFFICULT IT IS TO DELIVER IN
THE FINAL RACE IN THIS FORMAT?>>IT’S DIFFICULT FOR SURE.
WE WERE DOING EVERYTHING WE COULD.
AT ONE POINT, THE TOP FOUR CARS, JUST US.
THAT’S AMAZING. AND THAT’S SOMETHING WE
EXPECTED. BUT MAN, IT’S JUST FRUSTRATING.
HARD TO SAY I LIKED IT AT THE END, BUT I’M SURE IT WAS
EXCITING FOR THE FANS.>>HEARTBREAKING FINISH FOR JOEY
LOGANO TODAY.>>WELL, FROM THE AGONY OF
DEFEAT TO THE THRILL OF VICTORY. FOR KEVIN HARVICK, HE WAS FAST
THIS YEAR. LED MORE LAPS THAN ANYONE ELSE.
FIVE WINS, TIED FOR SECOND MOST OF THE SEASON.
WINNING THE LAST TWO RACES OF THE YEAR, THAT’S RISING TO THE
OCCASION WHEN THEY NEEDED IT TO MOST.
>>THERE WERE TIMES THEY DIDN’T CAPITALIZE, BUT HE KNEW THAT
FAST CARS WOULD ALWAYS WIN OUT.>>THAT’S GETTING THE JOB DONE
WHEN YOU’RE SUPPOSED DO. AND WE SAID, IF YOU’RE GOING TO
BE THE CHAMPION, YOU WERE GOING TO HAVE TO WIN THIS RACE.
>>GETTING READY FOR THE PRESENTATION OF THE SPRINT CUP
SERIES TROPHY. TO THE STAGE, AND DR. JERRY
PUNCH.>>WELL, OUR NEWEST CHAMPION HAS
MADE IT TO THE STAGE. HERE’S JEFF HALLECK FOR HIS
COMMENTS. JEFF?
>>WELL, JUST FANTASTIC. I’M REAL PROUD OF YOU.
ON BEHALF OF EVERYONE AT SPRINT, CONGRATULATIONS ON A GREAT
SEASON AND BEING THE SPRINT CUP SEASON.
>>I FORGOT WE WON THE RACE.>>A WALKOFF WIN, AND A WALKOFF
CHAMPIONSHIP. HOW ABOUT THE TROPHY?
HERE’S MIKE HELDEN, NASCAR PRESIDENT.
>>YOU RACED YOUR WAY IN NOT JUST TO THE RECORD BOOKS BUT THE
HISTORY BOOKS. CONGRATULATIONS, YOU EARNED IT.
YOU DESERVE IT. CONGRATULATIONS.
WE’RE PROUD TO HAVE YOU AS THE 2014 SPRINT CUP CHAMPION.
>>THERE HE IS, THE 30th CHAMPION IN NASCAR’S 66-YEAR
HISTORY. AND THE GUYS BEHIND US ARE
LOVING THIS. ALL RIGHT, CHAMP.
WHEN YOU’RE A CHAMPION, YOU A RESPONSIBILITY.
FOR THE MILLIONS OF FANS WATCHING AND LISTENING, WHAT IS
YOUR MESSAGE AFTER THIS INCREDIBLE CHASE ABOUT WHERE
THIS SPORT IS HEADED?>>WELL, I THINK THE CHASE IS
THE BEST THING TO HAPPEN TO THE SPORT IN THE LAST DECADE.
I WANT TO THANK THE FANS FOR STICKING WITH THE SPORT.
YOU GUYS ARE WHAT MAKES THIS GO AROUND, AND YOU GUYS ARE
SUPPORTING US.>>AND LET’S BRING UP TONY
STEWART. COME ON UP.
GENE HAAS. AND TONY STEWART.
YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN THROUGH A LOT.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN, TWO CHAMPIONSHIPS IN JUST A FEW
YEARS?>>I’M TOTALLY IN AWE.
TONY HAD THE FAITH IN ME, AND THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE.
I’M JUST IN AWE.>>AND TONY, YOUR THOUGHTS ON
KEVIN HARVICK AND HIS TEAM?>>FROM SEPTEMBER WHEN RODNEY
AND HIM AND THE WHOLE TEAM WENT THROUGH THE TEST, IT WAS OBVIOUS
THEY WERE GOING TO BE A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH THIS YEAR.
AND
TO WATCH THE RACE, AND SEE ALL FOUR CONTENDERS UP THERE IN
FRONT, I’M SO PROUD OF EVERYONE. JIMMY JOHN’S, CHEVROLET,
EVERYONE AT STEWART-HAAS RACING. I’M EXCITED HE HAS THE TRUST IN
US, AND THIS IS THE RESULT OF IT.
>>AND HE PULLED A RABBIT OUT OF THE HAT SO MANY TIMES.
YOU WERE ON THE EDGE –>>DON’T EVER QUIT UNTIL THEY
DROP THE CHECKERED FLAG. AND HERE WE ARE.
>>SO MANY TIMES, YOU JUST GOT IT DONE.
AND THAT’S HARD TO DO.>>YOU WOULD BE HARD-PRESSED TO GET A BETTER PICTURE.
HOW ABOUT THAT, THE 30th DIFFERENT CHAMPION IN NASCAR
HISTORY, WITH A WALKOFF VICTORY AT PHOENIX, AND
A WALKOFF
CHAMPIONSHIP HERE AT HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY.
>>THEY WORKED SO HARD AND RACED SO HARD, WITH A DREAM OF THAT
MOMENT, HOISTING THE CHAMPION’S TROPHY.
KEVIN HARVICK HAS DONE IT
TONIGHT.>>NOT A BETTER FEELING IN THE
WORLD.>>HE DID IT AFTER WINNING THE
SEASON FINALE, AFTER THIS NEW CHASE FORMAT FOR THIS YEAR.
THEY SAID ALL ALONG, YOU MAY HAVE TO WIN THE LAST RACE TO WIN
THE CHAMPIONSHIP. AND KEVIN HARVICK ACCOMPLISHED
IT TONIGHT. MORE TO COME.

100 thoughts on “NASCAR Sprint Cup Series – Full Race – 2014 Ford EcoBoost 400 at Miami

  • Just have to say this – that sign-off by Allen Bestwick (4:10:05)…  pure class.

Bestwick is the best play-by-play guy in the business, and I sincerely hope he winds up at NBC.  Hell, Mike Joy's great, but he's not getting any younger.  Maybe Allen will end up at Fox someday.

In any case, that was a great sign off.  So long, ESPN.

  • It would be so awesome if these could be streamed live! It probably can't happen because of licensing, but I can still daydream about it…

  • I'm going to get a lotof hate for this, but I cant let it slide…. Henry Kissinger said,  'military men are just dumb stupid animals to be used as pawns in foreign policy' ….  soldiers overseas are not fighting for the freedom of the USA (just read the Constitution), but they are fighting for wall-street bankers, oil companies, and the anglo-america establishment/nwo……………, it makes the sacrifice of dead soldiers even more heart-breaking, because they meant well and thought it was about 'usa usa usa', but it isnt… and while this video is about nascar and how great it is (besides my strong dislike of the chase format and turning it into wwe or a lottery), there are things in life that matter more, and the reality of war and the purpose of war, for the ruling elite, is one of those

  • I like the ESPN telecast in 2000, when I was introduced to NASCAR, they were commentors, I was hoping they would way better in 2007, but I have mistaken, so many fails and stupidity, but my favorite is Allen Bestwick, he did a great job on the booth. ESPN takes this as a job, FOX actually enjoys the races. I hope NBC does good like back in 2001-2006

  • I liked how Allen show respect by paying homage to the original ESPN cast from the 80s-2000 before signing off. Classy Move!

  • Great race! Congrats to Harvick on his first championship, and I do believe that this new format is the best thing that has ever happened to Nascar. It just makes the races so much more exciting. Also sad to see Ambrose leave Nascar, and Nascar leave ESPN, and I hope NBC does a good job with it on their network, but at least I know they can't be any worse than TNT.

  • What an end to an amzing season. Sad the Denny couldn't get it but Harvick is a well deserved champion. The 4 drivers who would deserved it most were the 2, 22, 24 and 4. They were the best this season. I hoped Jr would win in the last race with Steve Letarte or Carl in his last race with Roush. It'll be strange to see Carl not driving for them next season

  • Ok so what happened to the homestead commercial that was uploaded on this channel? that was the best 30 sec. video i think i've ever seen

  • And Gordon robbed of another one yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay, and why the fuck did he pit? And why the fuck are idiots racing for the 39th position on a WIDE ASS track wrecking each other determining the out come of the race and the CHAMPIONSHIP, they should be banned and sentenced to death. It has to be illegal to be that terrible and stupid. FUCK NA$CRAP!

  • everybody has a problem with how the season is decided through the playoff format, my issue is with how the individual races are decided. cautions are thrown way, way too much when there is no need to. Points system(which doesn't matter in the final race though) is total ride around in 10th garbage. And I haven't quite figure this out, but after some point in the race, your ass needs to be retired. TIred of seeing cautions at the end of the race between Josh Wise and Landon Cassill duking it out for 35th deciding races.

  • This isn't entertainment, this is easy I could beat all of those guys if I had a car and pit crew. I mean all you need is to be able to drive stick and to turn left, it just hard for them cause everyone there is just a binch of idiot redneck… Just the name jeff gordon sound inbred

  • My biggest dream is to go to Daytona but I live far away and I have not enough money to go … but I never give hopes.Regards from PERU

  • I still dont get nascar , they just go round and round …this is not racing. Anyway , i guess you have to be a fat drunk american to enjoy this…

  • I wish you could get cars like this on the road with the same body (obviously with headlights and without the sponsors and with a practical interior etc). Yes these cars are based on real life ones but they look so much cooler

  • Right at the end of the race, Harvick just got the lead, for the 1 millionst time a Ford grill as debry??? Common guys forbid that construction for 2015!! It happened too often this year that Ford cars lost that grill and brought out a caution!! Horrible!!!

  • Now,I know this MIGHT sound crazy to everyone but… here it goes… my thoughts on the 2014 NASCAR season

    1) I miss Dodge in NASCAR. Seriously,I miss seeing Dodges out on the track week in and week out. The Dodge teams I want to see are Penske,BK Racing,Petty, that would be pretty sweet.

    2) I seriously thought Austin Dillon and Kyle Larson would go at it for rookie honors… and I also thought Dillon would get the honors and wins too and show Larson who was the boss of the track… but boy…did Larson go and prove me wrong.

    3) I had thought up of a tournament format back in,believe it or not,2013! It was gonna be the 12 man format (top 10 plus the 2 wild cards) and after race 5,12 through 7 would be kicked out, after that, the driver at the back of the chase field at the end of races 6-9 would be kicked out, leaving the best 2 drivers to go at in Homestead. NASCAR went 1 up on me and added 4 more drivers and setting it up in 4 rounds. Mine was 3 (round 1 : races 1 to 5 round 2 : 6 to 9 round 3 : Homestead) And you know what? I'm not complaining about the tournament. Every race had me going "what's gonna happen next?"

    4) ABC,YOU WILL NOT BE MISSED! I swear,I saw the trends Monday after the race (I listened on PRN) and boy was I mad. there is always 3 sides to every story, and apparently,ABC turns a blind eye to the facts. In fact,I even read comments from angry fans too,I'm so thankful ABC is done covering NASCAR

    5) Now what?  You mean to tell me the tournament was another scheme to go after Jimmie Johnson? NO! Johnson had EVERY chance to move on and get out of round 2. It'll take time, but Johnson will get this tournament figured out.

    6) Going back to Kyle Larson, damn,he can race,I'm surprised he DIDN'T win at all… once Larson got going,he TRUMPED the rookie class of 2014

    7) Is it irony that make a Danica Patrick rant here at thought #7? SHE CAN'T RACE!!! I said this WAY back in 2011… but who listens to me,right? Kyle and Richard Petty said she can't race,I said it,LOTS of people said it! I hope she goes back to the open wheel cars. Seriously Tony Stewart,go get Parker Kligerman,Regan Smith,Jennifer Jo Cobb, somebody OTHER than Danica Patrick! She's not gonna win,no matter WHAT changes NASCAR makes to the cars and rules.

    8) Honestly… I think the Camaro should be the Chevy Cup car and the SS should be the Xfinity Series. Also, the Fusion should go to the Xfinity Series and Mustangs should be the Cup car for Ford, Am I SERIOUSLY the ONLY one who thinks that?

    9) It was a low blow for RFR when Edwards announced he was leaving Roush Fenway Racing on Brickyard Sunday. Really? I thought you weren't supposed to announce that stuff until AFTER the season ended.

    10) Tony Stewart? Winless? WHHHAAAAATTTT?!?!?! I can't believe that, seriously,i'm so used to hearing Tony Stewart getting 1 win a season at least… oh well,it had to happen at some point,am I right?

Done. go ahead and razz me out for anything.

  • Thank you NASCAR for the full race in have been in the 2013 one, and I knew Jimmie will win, still THOSE SIX ABBS CHAMP though

  • If you think Kevin Harvick didn't deserve the championship after what he did it the last 15 laps, you're a goddamn idiot. He drove like a fucking hero those last laps. 12th to 6th in 3 laps, then 6th to 1st in 1 and 3/4 of a lap, then held off 2 drivers desperate drivers to win in the last laps. He earned it.
    -From a diehard Gordon fan.

  • I thought Harv lost the race when he took four tires with 19 to go.  Just shows how much I know… What a ballsy call by Rodney Childers.  I'm so glad that Harv will not be the next Mark Martin.  It's about time that he got his title.  Go #4!

  • Do you have any news video of Elvis Presley deliberatly running over and killing 18 women and seriously injuring 12 more?

  • Kevin got real LUCKY that WWECAR made a stupid chase format that is ALL BASED ON LUCK. This whole thing should have asterisks all over it.

  • Kevin Harvick: Went from the most stressful task ever of replacing the greatest of all-time to a champion himself.

  • God It hurt so bad seeing Gordon run so good but not have a chance because of Brad. He had the championship. The way he drove last season was purely incredible. Just to have it all end in the blink of an eye tore me apart big time. Just seeing the way he drove last year showed how much he wanted that cup. I'll always love you Jeff. It's so hard knowing my childhood hero is taking his final laps. It hasn't been the best season so far but I believe in you.

  • I believe this was the best NASCAR season ever. Even though I'm a Gordon fan and believe he should've won the championship it's still one of my favorite NASCAR seasons

  • does anyone else notice the bent sides to the bottom left…. at least 7 that I could count??? great race though. Newman drove his heart out!!! Good luck to Jeff #24

  • i feel so stupid i was watching this thinking it was 2016 and saw Gordon leading the race and was like "how the fuck is Gordon in the lead?!" then i looked at the title and saw 2014 lol.

  • I miss Bestwick. He gives you enough information without overdoing it. Compare this call here to Rick Allen's call this year to see what I mean.

  • Wonder how come this was the last race where these cars had 850HP oh that's right turdyota motors kept blowing up and got shit stomped everywhere 2 wins across the board 2 fucking wins then they drop the HP down to 725HP and then they got and "engine advancement" then changing the aero package weekly to favor their shit cars abbra fucking cadabra 10 wins in 13 races JGR going 1234 multiple races something even Hendrick Motorsports hasn't accomplished and now their more dominant and superior then Chevy and Ford sure glad Brian "The almighty Dollar" France gave them every advantage there is so they wouldn't pull sponsorship and risk his pockets gettin lighter

  • Last race of ESPN and its pit studio
I think indycar on ESPN used it as a broadcast booth for some races but not sure (if someone knows what happened to it plz tell me)

  • Last race on ESPN
    Last race for Marcos Ambrose
    Last race for Steve Letarte
    Last race for Jimmy Fennig
Last race for Carl Edwards in the #99
Last race for Trevor Bayne in the #21
Last race for Alex Bowman in the #23

  • 2013 and 2014 were best seasons because there was old good drivers and Chevy SS, Toyota Camry 2013 and Ford Fusion.

  • I was being Devil’s Advocate and rooted for Ryan Newman all the way because I wanted him to completely eff up the new chase format 😂😂
