Old Covenant vs New Covenant

we've been working at this theology taught in mainstream Christianity now they're in Old Testament times God expected his people to obey his laws we call this the dispensation of law but that in the New Testament times God does not expect his people to keep his laws we call this the dispensation of grace well in actuality in the New Testament it reveals that the believers continued to observe God's commandments in New Testament times and we look at that more weeks to come but today I want to look at the idea that law and grace do make parallel Old Covenant and New Covenant now it's true that grace is in the New Covenant but grace is also in the Old Covenant right we looked at that last week in the life of Noah nor was saved by grace God had grace on Noah and we know that there is law in the Old Covenant but there is also law in the New Covenant this week I want to look at the difference between the Old Covenant and the New Covenant a first of all the Old Covenant is not the first portion of your Bible okay that's not the Old Covenant and the New Covenant is not the second portion of your Bible the Old Covenant or the Old Testament what we call the load test me it does contain the conditions of the Old Covenant but the books themselves Genesis through Malachi are not the Old Covenant true that in second Corinthians 314 it does say that when they read from the Old Covenant and it is speaking about when the tour is read in the synagogue's that there continues to be a veil over the Jewish people's eyes so that they cannot see their Messiah it does use the term their old covet but it's referring to the agreement made pertaining to the law and not to what we call the Old Testament itself the Old Covenant or any covenant really is an agreement covenant means agreement when someone makes a covenant they'll make an agreement we make covenants today when someone gets married they make a covenant they make an agreement that they're going to stay with each other they're going to love each other all their lives and be committed to each other when a landlord and the tenant makes an agreement to rent for a period of time that's a covenant so a covenant is an agreement okay the old covenant is an agreement that God made at Mount Sinai with Israel more specifically who Jenna who are Galatians 6 16 refers to as the Israel of God who is the Israel of God the Israel of God are those who are Israel because of their faith because they have the faith of Abraham because they've accepted the Messiah that was promised to comb through Abraham those are the Israel of God and sometimes they are made up of abraham's physical descendants but not necessarily it one doesn't have to be a physical descendant of Abraham to be a child of Abraham because it's a child of Abraham by faith so we all sing the song writing room Sunday Spears when we were kids for you were in Sunday school father Abraham had many sons many sons had Arthur Abraham I am one of them and so are you so let's all praise the Lord anybody remember that ok how was it that we Gentiles claim to be children of Abraham because our faith because of our faith our faith made us children of Abraham it's also true that the New Testament books North you through the book of Revelation is not the New Covenant these new testament books reveal the mediator of the New Covenant in the person of Jesus Christ but the books themselves are not the New Covenant remember covenant is an agreement what we call the Old Testament or the Old Covenant is more than just an agreement that was made at Mount Sinai to see kind of the confusion here aware this is kind of going here see when Christians hear that were no longer under the Old Covenant anymore they want to check out the entire Old Testament because they see that as the Old Covenant instead of the agreement made at Mount Sinai I think it'd be maybe it would be easier if we called the Old Testament something else I'm not saying call the Old Testament something else I'm saying if we called it by another knee maybe if we referred to the Old Testament with another name it might kind of threw up a little bit of the confusion about what's done away with it wasn't what we call the Old Covenant or the old testament to stun away with from Genesis to Malachi that's not done away with a covenant that was doing away with was the agreement that was made at mid scenery and we look at that here in just a new role could recall that we home the Old Testament or the Old Covenant well I think maybe the term Tanakh would be good that's original is it not no it's really not Jewish people have been calling what we call the Old Testament see because the Jewish people wouldn't call the Old Testament the Old Testament because it's their Bible it's not old to them or it's all in the sense that its centuries-old but when we say the word old we're not talking about old mooing old we're talking about old meaning done away with so long it's kind of confusing but Jewish people would never call Genesis to Malachi their Old Testament they call it the two milk they call it the two milk or the scripture sometimes they refer to it as the poor the entire thing tanakh is a Hebrew word and it doesn't sound old and it doesn't sound buried it's actually an acronym hey Jerry can I have you put up the he's already ruined way to go Jerry thanks okay Torah here to knock here which is their word for Old Testament and in Hebrew the vowels would not exist so in the word to knock translated in english this is what we've got the t actually stands for torah which is instructions and the n would stand for never aim profits in place although remember it pass over time and sing the song Eliyahu Hanavi yahoo heart ish be you know that's a really kind of a course on Eliyahu was Elijah Hanavi is the Prophet Navi and if you and Ellie yahoo Eliyahu ha Tish V is Elijah the Tishbite I that is I know it I know what a fish bite is is when he bites the hook but at ish bike I don't know but the movie is profit and if it needs to be plural you put the email in so you have nothing so that the ends would include the profits the learner and the major prophets of the tonight and then the CH would be the kettle tattoo veen or the writings so that's how they break it up they use the word they call it the torque and it includes all of these the Torah the first five books of Moses the prophets and then the writings and it's kind of interesting because Messiah kind of does the same thing currently please Luke chapter 24 in Luke chapter 24 this is after his resurrection just before his ascension and he's speaking to his disciples let me get my glasses on here and he's speaking to his disciples and he says this in verse 44 of chapter 24 at Luke then he said to them these are my words which I spoke to you while I was still with you that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and in the Psalms must be fulfilled and then he opened their mind to understand the scriptures so it's kind of a neat parallel here that scriptures to knock because the Tanakh the word to knock stands for these three areas but law of Moses the prophets and the sounds or the writings and certainly understands kind of an interesting way of looking at it there okay so what is the Old Covenant what is the old agreement made at Mount Sinai let's take a look Exodus 19 verse 4 if you would to me please let's go back hanging in Exodus 19 and verse 4 it says you have seen any speaking here who moves us to speak to the children of Israel you have seen what I did to the Egyptians and how I bore you on eagle's wings and brought you to myself now therefore if you will obey my voice and keep my covenant you shall be my own possession among the peoples for all the earth is mine and you shall be no you shall be to me our kings and priests or a kingdom of priests and a holy nation these are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel to earthly things to chapter 4 of Deuteronomy now this is little later on but it's moves of speaking to the children about what happened back at Mount Sinai and beginning in verse 9 of chapter 4 it reads only take heed and keep your soul diligently lest you forget the things which your eyes have seen unless they depart from your heart all the days of your life make them more into your children in your children's children how long the day that you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb or this is just another word from Mount Sinai the Lord said to you gather the people to me that I may let them hear my words so that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live upon the earth and that they may teach their children so and you came near and you stood at the foot of the mountain while the mountain burned with fire to the heart of heaven wrapped in darkness cloud and groom then the Lord spoke to you out of the midst of the fire you heard the sound of words but you saw me foam there was only a voice and he declared to you his covenant which he commanded to you to perform that is the Ten Commandments and he wrote them upon two tablets of stone and the LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and ordinances that you might do them in the land which you are going over to possess continue please in Deuteronomy 5 verse 1 and there's a seminal Israel said to them here are Israel the statutes in the ordinances which I speak in your hearing today and you shall learn them and be careful to do them the Lord our God made a covenant with us at home or in Mount Sinai not with our fathers that heat the Lord make this covenant but with us who are all with us alive this day the Lord spoke with you face to face at the mountain out of the midst of the fire while I stood excuse me while I stood between the Lord in you at that period to declare you the words of the Lord for you were afraid because of the fire and you did not go up into the mountain so God delivers Israel out of the house of bondage or out of Egypt and you guys all know the Passover story hopefully you're familiar anyway with it that in reality it's a prophetic window of our salvation and redemption through Jesus Christ our Passover lamb see this story that when we're meeting at below this story is set up with the understanding that you kind of under that you can already know what has happened the people this will find themselves in Egypt because of a famine and while in Egypt the people that the Egyptians rose up and made the people of Israel captive made them their slaves and when we started to cry out once i got tired of that and God delivered them or God gave them a deliverer in the man called Moses and through a series of plagues favor finally comes to terms that he's going to let these people go so at this last plague which will be the Angel of Death the firstborn would buy in all of Egypt including the first born of the children of Israel so God said to the people of Israel I want you to take a lamb and I want you to kill it and I want you to take some of the blood and put it on the board post and the lintel of your house and remain in your house because the Angel of Death is going to pass over all the land of Egypt and in any home where there is no blood on the door the firstborn of that home is going to die but where there is blood the Angel of Death will pass over that house and no hay will come to that house well this is what took place the people of Israel that were faithful to do this no one died in their home but among the Egyptians it says there was not a house in Egypt where somebody hadn't died from the least up to the slaves to the throne of Pharaoh and we know that his son dies and after this last plague favor says get out just leave so Moses leads the people of Israel who have been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb here eataly he leads them out of Egypt on the first day of what later we would know would be called the first day of unleavened bread so he leads them out of Egypt on the first day of unleavened bread and as God is doing this he's setting up a 10 under basis but it's more than a calendar basis he's given us a prophetic pillow of what his son was going to come and do and years to come Jesus Christ and every event that follows here to that day takes place in the first advent of our Lord and Savior Moses leads the people of Israel out of Egypt on the first day of unleavened bread on first fruit i believe they crossed the Red Sea and they find themselves in the wilderness 50 days later they come to Mount Sinai and this is where the context of what we're speaking they have arrived at Mount Sinai God has brought and already redeemed people to the foot of Mount Sinai he comes down in a member a small manifestation of his Shekinah glory because if he didn't restrict it it would burn everything up he comes down in a restricted a definition of his of his glory and the mountain quakes and God gives his covenant his laws to the people and already redeemed people that they might know how to live when they go in to the land that he's about to give them okay that's the picture that he that is painted here so what is the agreement what is the Covenant the Covenant is not the law itself the Covenant is the agreement that they would keep this law when we go into the Promised Land okay go down there there's a problem there were still under the power of their old nature the people of Israel were delivered only from physical slavery they were not redeemed from the slavery of sin that would not happen until Jesus Christ would come and die to free us from our old nature from our fallen nature from the power of sin or from the power of breaking God's law then they have rented to obey God but their old nature was contrary to God's law Paul describes this struggle let's take a look at it in Romans chapter 7 beginning in verse 21 it reads so I find it to be a law that may not work principle that when I want to do right evil eyes close at hand for I delight in the law of God in my innermost self but I see in my members inside of him bc another law at war with the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin which dwells in my members wretched name that I am who will deliver me from this body of death thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord so then I of myself serve the law of God with my mind but with my flesh I serve the Lord seen there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus for the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and death now the law of sin and death is not God's law the law of sin and death is this law that says that if you sin you die if you break the law you die that's the law or the principle of sin and death it's kind of like it's kind of like the law of gravity well the law of gravity's no law in the sense that we think of it as a law it's a principle if you drop something fell to the ground it's the law of gravity so it's a principle that he's speaking about here in these situations in order that the just requirements excuse me back up just a little bit here in verse 34 God has done with the law weakened by the flesh couldn't do and what it could not do is change us by sending his own sane in the likeness of sinful flesh and first sin he condemned sin in the flesh in order that the just requirements of the law might be fulfilled in us who walked men according to the flesh but according to the spirit now he defines what this means listen for those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh but those who live according to the spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit now what does that mean let's take it and put it into practical terms to set the main on the flesh is death but to set the mind spirit is life and peace for the main that is set on the flesh is hostile to God it does not submit to God's law indeed it cannot and those who are in the flesh cannot please God but you are not in the flesh you are in the spirit if in fact the spirit of god dwells in you see it's those who are loved by the flesh that break God's commandments it's not those who are led by the Spirit so the Old Covenant is God's law that he gave at Mount Sinai that was outside of them hanging over them hence we get the tomb under the law if a person is under the law before the first the laws outside of them and it hangs over them these are words that kind of speak of the idea of it that it's contrary to them that it's something outside of them it's something hanging over them it's looming over them it's something that is contrary to their nature that's the Old Covenant given it mounts only so what is the New Covenant what's the New Covenant time with me please to Jeremiah chapter 31 Jeremiah describes for us this new covenant but God had decided long before Jesus Christ came in the flesh that was going to happen in Jeremiah 31 and beginning at verse 30 when it reads behold the days are coming says the Lord when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah okay so now this is speaking here of the Covenant that God made with them at military why do I know that because it says so in verse 32 not like the Covenant that I made with their fathers when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt my covenant which they broke though I was a father excuse me though I was their husband says the Lord okay so God is saying here that he's going to make a new covenant now like the Covenant that he made with them when he brought them out of Egypt the covenant by which they broke though he was their husband it says 33 but this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days says the Lord I will put my law within them and i will write it it upon their hearts and I will be their God and they shall be my people and no longer shall each man teach his neighbor in each his brother saying know the nerd for they shall all know me from the least of them to the greatest says the Lord for I will forgive their iniquities and I will remember their sins no more praise God for that the New Covenant is an agreement that God made through Jesus Christ that he would take away our sins through his death on the cross but also that he would change us see the promise of the New Covenant the salvation that we have in Jesus Christ is not just that he died so that our sins could be washed away it includes that praise God but the first salvation worked out in us is that it would change us that it would change who we are it wouldn't just take away our sins and then we go on continue singing but it would actually be a transformation we call this a born-again experience God's commandments was not the problem the problem for the people because their hearts needed changed they were still carrying with them the file from their father Adam and Eve their parents i should say Adam and Eve Anthony had given back to Romans in Chapter seven Romans chapter 7 and beginning at verse 12 says so the law is holy and the commandment is holy and just and good this is the Apostle Paul speaking okay he's not saying your bondage he's not saying here curse he's saying the law is holy the commander is holy and just and good did that which is good then bring death to me by no means it was sin which is breaking God's law working death in me through what is good in order that sin might be shown to be sin and through the commandment might become sin for beyond measure we know that the law is spiritual but I am carnal sold under sin I don't understand my own actions for I do not do what I want and I do the very thing I hate now if I do what I now if I do what I do not want I agree that the law is good so then it was no longer I that do it but sin which dwells in me for I know that nothing there dwells within me that is in my flesh word to do what is right but I cannot do it for I do not do that word I weren't but the evil that i do not want is what I do so that real fast now if i do that i do not want it is no longer I that do it but sin which dwells in me you see when we repent and accept Jesus as our Savior we have a dune what is called a born-again experience we receive the Holy Spirit and a new heart tells me back pains to Ezekiel chapter 11 Ezekiel speaks of this new covenant in this form he says in chapter 11 beginning of verse 19 and I will give them a new heart and I would put a new spirit within them I will take away the stony heart out of their flush and give them a heart of flesh that they may walk in my statutes and keep my ordinances and obey them and they shall be my people and I will be their God just like Jeremiah says but as for those whose heart goes those after their detestable things and their abominations I will requite their deeds upon your own heads says the Lord God see I think the easy way to remember this whole thought here of what I'm trying to say is this way Jay can I have many other thing think of it this way Old Covenant was given to people who were trying to keep it with their old nature so you have Old Covenant of nature you can't be under the Old Covenant if you are born again believer in Jesus Christ because you are now under the New Covenant you're not under the Old Covenant so when we look at this idea i think it just kind of makes it simple old covenant with the people of their old nature the new covenant is with a people of a new nature and it's not because of us it's because of what God would do when he gave his laws at Mount Sinai he gave them to a people who are under the old nature and it was contrary to them they thought it all alone though they want to do what they know is right there is something that dwells in them that does not allow the new pope paul just defined and described this conflict within a person but to the redeemed who had the Holy Spirit a born-again nature we enter into a new covenant I mean that's how we enter into a new covenant it's not the same the new covenant it doesn't change God's laws it changes us it changes where the problem was it fixes the problem it changes our nature our heart your attitude toward God's commandments it's being led by the spirit and not by the flesh so that we want to obey if we love god his ways are the light to us amen none it's from that love that we have an inner desire to keep God's commandments and as commandments are not burdensome to us and they want bondage and they're not a curse Vermont contrary to us but if you're led by the flesh by the old nature by the stony heart in God's commandments are contrary to you they are a burden to you they are bondage they are a curse and you will not obey God's laws in fact Romans 8 says you cannot see you you're still struggling with not wanting to obey God's commandments you're still under the weakness of the Old Covenant they're still under the influence of the Old Covenant see I've been told in the past that I'm really were the old covenant because I'm trying to obey God's laws law meaning friends 1 million Christians have told me that I'm living under the Old Covenant but I say I'm trying to keep God's commandments because I'm living under the New Covenant someone in the New Covenant once to obey God's commandments from the heart because they love God but it's not to try to earn their salvation I don't keep the law because I'm trying to earn my salvation because I am saved and I've been told you don't understand what Jesus did for you and you don't understand grace well I understand very well why the level of my soul had to die for me on the cross it's it's fairly clear to me then inspires understanding grace you try to walk in God's principles you try to make him first in your life in every aspect you do and you'll learn very quickly and appreciate god's grace your training understand the wound for God's grace let no one deceive you it's when a person doesn't want to obey God's commands or speaks against them or lashes out against you because you're trying to obey them it is there that need to ask themselves our way in the New Covenant let me simplify what I've said today by asking and answering a few questions what's the new covenant what's the new covenant that's right the new covenant is when God takes the same laws that he gave that he manifested in his word and changes us and takes those laws and rights them on our hearts and puts them in our minds that's the new covenant it's not that he threw these things away now we live under grace and we don't need to worry about obeying God's laws because we live in grace we we can live in a perpetual state of ungodliness and sin and grace covers all of that that is not the new covenant let's just look at what the new government for what the Bible calls the new covenant there is Grace and when we come it amen that that that's what makes it all possible but the new covenant is not this idea that God has made void his law and now just excuses as if his people walking out their life doing anything wrong when they continue to transgress that now the reason that this does not seem as as a bigger plane as I'm saying is because as I said before there's not a Christian that I've ever talked to that believes that the law is done away with you realize that you ask you talk to them they will initially tell you yes the law is done away with but if you ask them if it's okay to murder of course not it's not okay to commit adultery is not okay to steal it's not okay to lie and on and on and on it's because they don't believe that the law is done away with they just believe that certain laws are going away with and that and that accounts for the whole theology of what we call the Old Covenant being done away with and were under the New Covenant the Old Covenant is done away with the Old Covenant was the Covenant that God made with a people to keep his laws in their fallen condition the New Covenant is that God changes us regenerates us through the power of His Holy Spirit and what takes those laws and rights mother hurt put Sam in her mind now this is just the first fruits of this whole revelation this what he is speaking about here is not going to be fully manifest until the resurrection when we are resurrected from the dead we will not be able to send anymore because a very nature would be as his nature to us our very being would be like God not above him by any means but like him in the sense that we will live forever in obedience to him because we will be resurrected in more bodies perfect bodies that are in obedience to him and then the scripture will be fulfilled but says you don't need to tell your neighbor or anyone about the Lord because we'll all know the Lord this is the leaving community i'm talking about that when this manifestation takes place of our perfect resurrected bodies we will live in harmony with God forever on a new earth praise God for that but we still have the first fruits of that right now an inward desire to want to obey Him and we stumble of course we do that's why we have grace but there is a desire that comes with more than just a if I can get around to it it comes with the idea that it's a passion there should be a passion in us to do the will of God there should be a passionate us to find what his desire is for our lives that's what the new covenant is if the law is red we're in the heart of a Christian this is a question I've got okay these are questions are god I've got given to me if the law is written on the heart of a Christian why don't christians know it why don't they do it well okay I my answer this question with the understanding but I'm talking about people who really are saved who really are believers they don't just go to church and and and we've never made a profession of faith they've never had a born-again experience I'm going to confirm the answer to this question in the fact that a person has a relationship with God why don't they do it then if it's written on their hearts and in their mind if it's been through the manifestation of a born-again experience when the Holy Spirit comes at us takes out our heart of stone and gives us a heart of flesh and in that flush since it's not evil it was a soft heart toward done if that has happened and why isn't all the church world messianic it's a good question and I think I have an answer it is it is written on their heart and I think it's being manifested more times people come to me and I say to them one of my favorite questions to ask a new Messianic is how can he do this huh what what did God do to bring into this situation what why are you looking under this stuff what happened and over and over and over I hear this i sat in a contemporary church for years some say all my life and I listen to the sermons each rank you know some of them were excellent sermons but whenever I heard that God's laws were done away with again just certain ones a very few actually that we turn Jewish that whenever I would hear that these were done away with something was wrong in my heart some something just didn't seem right my conscience was saying when the pastor knows more than I do lunch he knows the Bible better than I do surely he's right but there was something that told me since this the answer to this is not far before me I hear that all the time and I believe it's because God put in them that knowledge but because we live in the culture that we live in and because of dispensationalism and all these other things there's a mass amount of confusion and people that we trust who who are well-meaning not even and friends that we love who are wonderful and they love God and they want to serve God and they try to encourage us and they really do seek our best interest are constantly telling us look good these things aren't for us anymore and so we live in confusion we don't know what to do you get a few young people who are just on fire for the ministry we send them off to seminary school and wow what comes out of them after that is what we've been talking about this whole again with this whole dispensationalism thing and basically that Norwich that I believe God gives us kind of a veil it's built that needs to be lifted it needs to be lifted off don't have to be humble in buying it because I can't lift the veil from anybody's eyes and you can't either you can talk to your friends you can talk to your family members and continue to do that but you've got to pray for them because it's God who lifts the veil so that they can see you know and in really again like I said they already have it I know because they know they'll know that it's wrong to lie and steal commit adultery their heart tells them that if we lived in a culture or if they visited a culture where they sat down in a congregation in the pasture stood up there and said we don't need to worry about obeying God's laws ladies and gentlemen if you seek another one's spouse go ahead and fulfill your passions there's no a born-again believer that I know who would not go that is not from God how do we know that well we have his word that tells us and we have the Holy Spirit in a screaming at that point that's not for me that's phone to me what have the same word when it comes to keeping the Sabbath and the dietary laws in the feast days and we have the same Holy Spirit saying yes this is right but we live in a culture where these things have been tossed out the door so what bombarded constantly with this confusing message thrown around to us okay that's why I believe that they're doing it who is the nuke excuse me who is the New Covenant made with and that one that one will go answer next week okay let's pray father thank you so much for today thank you for your girls and their lives Lord God thank you for caring about his father even even when we weren't right with you even when we worked we walked contrary to whom he want us to be Lord when we were rebellious to you and we might have even hated you that you loved us but while we were yet sinners you died for us can you brought us into a relationship with the god of the universe and you saved us from ourselves you saved us from our sins you you washed it away you took away the debt that stood against us the hustle father you're in the process of changing us and we'll pray lord god that our desire would be that you have your way that you change us father I pray that we can all be soft-hearted before you that we can all be molded by you into anything you want us to be Lord God in heaven we thank you for the work that we couldn't do we thank you for achieving in us that which was impossible for us got into that in heaven we pray that you would continue to enlighten us and give us strength continue to fill us with your Holy Spirit continue to lead us and guide us we're not all where we need to be one of us are rodas ire is that you would take us where we are at right now total that if we will surrender to you right now we know Lord God that you would use us that you will make the proper changes and all the other things necessary to take what was it once or rebellious even an enemy of yours and it through your mercy you can draw somewhere to yourself and cause us to be people who take your love out so that others may find it father God in heaven we pray that wherever we are today that our hearts would be surrendered to you that we would begin where we are that there would be no falseness nor false claims just poured out before you who we are and make us who you want us to be we ask that in the only name that has authority we ask that in the name of the only one who can make it happen your son Jesus Christ amen thank you for your time folks

  • Jeremiah 31:31 is still in the future, what does Matt. 5:18 tell us?18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

still under the Old Covenant until this heaven and earth pass away

  • I am watching this video piece by piece because in at work, great video…But I have a question Yehweh lead me to His Sabbath and to abstain from unclean foods….But how far does it go? Galatians 5:3 comes to my mind. How about stonings, is that taken away because we are not to take vengeance on people? How far does it go?
