Storytelling Basics from Freedom Writers’ Erin Gruwell

As an English teacher, I learned that it was the stories that mattered – storytelling. So my tip for Toastmasters is to make a story as realistic as it can be: Add in imagery, metaphors and analogies and bring it to life. So as a teacher I was always looking for that perfect story that a student can visualize. I think as a speaker we need to do the same, make it come to life, leap out of the page and have them hang on every word, jump to the ending, have them make inferences and put themselves right there next to you. I think storytelling is an important trait of a teacher but it’s even more important when you are a speaker.
