COMMEMORATION OF THE BEGINNING OF THE 500th ANNIVERSARY OF THE
THAT’S THE PRODESTANT REFORMATION. TONIGHT’S SPEAKER WILL BE DR. BRUCE BRASINGTON AND HIS TALK WILL BE TITLE, “HERE
WE STAND, THE REFORMATION AND THE HISTORY OF FREEDOM”. THERE
ARE LOTS OF PEOPLE I WOULD LIKE TO THINK FOR MAKING THIS EVENING
HAPPENED. FIRST AND FOREMOST I WOULD LIKE TO THINK THE REMNANT
TRUST AND THE PRESIDENT WHO IS NOT IN ATTENDANCE TONIGHT. THE THE

BRAISINGTON ONE DURING HIS 20 YEARS AS A PROFESSOR OF HISTORY

PROFESSORSHIPS FROM THE PIPER ASSOCIATION IN 2012. ONE I
BELIEVE A FIVE IN THE HISTORY OF WEST
TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY. AND MOST RECENTLY HE WAS NAMED WEST
TEXAS A&M’S OPTIMIST BY THE FACULTY SENATE IN 2016 WHICH
LITERALLY TRANSLATED MEANS, BEST TEACHER. THE AUTHOR OF OVER
50 PUBLISH ARTICLES AND FOUR BOOKS TO DATE. DR. BRAISINGTON IS A
WORLD RENOWNED SCHOLAR OF MEDIEVAL HISTORY, CANON LAW AND
THE REFORMATION. HE IS TAUGHT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF DRESDEN AND WISTER
IN GERMANY. HE LECTURED AT CAMBRIDGE KINGS COLLEGE AND YALE
UNIVERSITY. NOT ONLY DOES HE HAVE EXTENSIVE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT
MARTIN LUTHER, THE REFORMATION AND THE HISTORICAL CONTEXT, HE

16th CENTURIES AND INTERPRET THEM. DESPITE ALL THE ACCOLADES EARNED DURING A

YEARS AND I’M STILL THE ROOKIE IN THE DUAL. 29th YEAR AT WEST TEXAS A&M

COME NOT FROM THE ADVERSITY, NOT FROM THE SYSTEM, NOT FROM
PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS, NOT EVEN FROM PRIVATE FOUNDATIONS OR
EVEN HIS PEERS, THEY COME FROM HIS STUDENTS. LET ME SHARE ONE
OF THESE WITH YOU. WHEN I WAS HEAD OF THE HISTORY DEPARTMENT,
EVERY YEAR REREAD THE EVALUATIONS STUDENTS WOULD WRITE
ABOUT THEIR PROFESSORS. AND IN 2012, A STUDENT WROTE THIS,
ABOUT DR. BRAISINGTON. I TOOK WESTERN
CIVILIZATION BECAUSE IT WAS REQUIRED. IT FIT INTO MY

TO, GOVERNMENT PROTECTS US, IN THEORY — FROM — FROM HARM AND WE ARE FREE TO
FLOURISH AS INDIVIDUALS, TO SEEK OUR OWN
ENDS PROVIDED OF COURSE, THAT OUR FREEDOMS DO NOT INTERFERE IN
THE FREEDOMS OF OTHERS. WE SHALL BEGIN THIS
EVENING BY REFLECTING ON THE REFORMATION’S CONTRIBUTION TO
THAT DEFINITION OF FREEDOM. MORE SPECIFICALLY, HOW AUTHORS, MOST

FOR WORLD BEHAVIOR. WHAT KIND OF FREEDOM AND WE HAVE? THE LAST
DEFINITION WE GO BACK TO LUTHER, HOW HE UNDERSTOOD FREEDOM
DIFFERS PER FAMILY FROM THE FIRST TWO. THIS FREEDOM WAS WHAT DROVE HIM TO STAND 500
YEARS AGO TO TAKE HAMMER IN HAND BEFORE THE CHURCH DOOR AND
LATER TO STAND BEFORE EMPEROR AND STAND BESIDE MEN AND WOMEN IN NEED. YOU HAVE SEEN THE PICS
AND — PICTURE ON THE WITTENBERG DOOR THIS EVENING AND THAT DOOR
IS A LOT MORE MONEY THAN THE BEST ONE IN 1870. LUTHER’S
HAMMER BLOWS IN 1517 ECHOED DOWN THE
CENTURIES. THEY CALL TO MIND THE IMAGE OF A DETERMINED, ANGRY
MONK WHO — THOUGH HE DID NOT KNOW IT — WAS CHANGING THE
WORLD. HOWEVER WE SHOULD REMEMBER THE YEARS THROUGH WHAT WE HEAR
AND SEE WE CANNOT ESCAPE HER OWN TIME, WHICH FUNDAMENTALLY
COMPLICATES OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE PAST. EVERY GENERATION HAS ITS LUTHER’S. CONSIDER A
MAGAZINE ARTICLE FROM A CENTURY AGO COMMEMORATING THE 400th
ANNIVERSARY OF THE REFORMATION, QUOTE,, AGAINST THE DOOR ABOUT
CHURCH OF DUBIOUS SAINTS AND DUBIOUS RELICS, WAS FOUND
FASTENED ON THAT MEMORABLE DAY A SCROLL UNROLLED. THE WRITING ON
IT WAS FIRM. THE NAILS WHICH HELD IT WELL DRIVEN IN. THE

NODDED IN AGREEMENT. NO SURPRISE THERE. PROTESTANT AMERICA WAS
THE NORM IN 1917. EVEN AMID THE HORRORS OF WORLD WAR I, THEY
TRUSTED IN GOD’S PROVIDENCE AND HOPE IN A LIFE BEYOND THIS
WHEN. THEY BELIEVED IN TRUTH, NOT OPINIONS. AND AS A MATTER OF
HISTORICAL FACT, ASSUMED SEVERAL AND RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
HAD BEEN ONE NOT ONLY IN PHILADELPHIA, BUT ALSO AT
WITTENBERG AND WORMS. AND ASKED FOR WARMS, HAD NOT LUTHER SOME 2 1/2 YEARS AFTER
HIS HAMMER JOURNEYED ACROSS GERMANY TO CONFRONT THE EMPEROR
HAD HE NOT DECLARED, QUOTE, UNLESS I AM
CONVINCED BY THE TESTIMONY OF THE HOLY SCRIPTURES OR BY
EVIDENT REASON, FOR I CAN EITHER BELIEVE POPE NOR COUNCILS ALONE
AS IT IS CLEAR THEY HAVE IT AIRED REPEATEDLY AND
CONTRADICTED THEMSELVES. I CONSIDER MYSELF CONVICTED BY THE
TESTIMONY OF THE HOLY SCRIPTURE WHICH IS MY BASIS. MY
CONSCIENCE IS CAPTIVE TO THE WORD OF GOD. THUS I CANNOT AND
WILL NOT RECANT BECAUSE ACTING
AGAINST ONCE CONSCIENCE IS NEITHER SAFE, NOR SOUND. GOD
HELP ME, AMEN. WHILE SOME MAY DISPUTE
WHETHER HE SAID THE, GOD HELP ME PART,
WE HAVE HERE BY THE WAY THE EARLIEST ACCOUNT OF WHAT TOOK
PLACE ON THAT APRIL DAY IN 1521. THERE IS NO QUESTION THAT
LUTHER STOOD FIRM. HE DID NOT PULL THE NAILS FROM THE
95 THESIS. HE WOULD NOT TAKE BACK WHAT HE HAD WRITTEN. HE
WOULD NOT BE SILENCED. SO TOO MANY IF NOT
ALL AMERICANS A CENTURY AGO, MARTIN LUTHER WAS SERVED THAT
SURELY A HERO FOR FREEDOM. AND 2017, MARTIN LUTHER CAN SEEM
QUITE DIFFERENT. HOW CAN ONE IGNORE HOW THE NAZIS EXPLOITED
HIS VIOLENT ATTACKS ON THE JEWS. NEVERTHELESS, IF THE LOSER SEEMS SOMEWHAT
TARNISHED, ONE MIGHT ASSUME HIS MESSAGE AT WITTENBERG AND LATER
A WORMS BUT STILL RING TRUE. IT’S A CLARION CALL FOR CIVIL
AND RELIGIOUS LIBERTY. SURELY, SOME OF THE VOLUMES LOANED BY
THE TRUST WOULD ALSO AGREE WITH THE ADMITTEDLY PARTISAN LUTHERAN
WITNESS OF THE GREAT REFORMER HAD BEEN A PIONEER FOR FREEDOM.
NO MOST IN FACT DID NOT. GRANTED THERE WERE ALWAYS EXCEPTIONS.
OUR SECOND PRESIDENT, JOHN ADAMS, DID ONE POINT MARK, QUOTE, AFTER MARTIN
LUTHER HAD INTRODUCED INTO GERMANY THE LIBERTY OF THINKING
IN MATTERS OF RELIGION, AND DIRECTED THE STANDARD OF
REFORMATION, JOHN CALVIN, A NATIVE OF A FAST GENUS, SINGULAR ELOQUENCE, VARIOUS IRRITATION AND PUBLISHED
TASTE EMBRACED THE CAUSE OF REFORMATION. SOME DECADES LATER
FREDERICK DOUGLASS FOUND LUTHER KINDRED SPIRIT AND AN
INSPIRATION FOR THOSE WHO STOOD AGAINST THE OPPRESSION BY THE
MAJORITY. HERE FREDERICK DOUGLASS, QUOTE, TAKE COURAGE
FROM THE EXAMPLE OF ALL RELIGIOUS DENOMINATIONS THAT
HAVE SPRUNG UP SINCE MARTIN LUTHER. EACH HAS BEEN OPPRESSED
AND PERSECUTED. METHODIST, BAPTIST, AND QUAKERS HAVE ALL
BEEN COMPILED TO FEEL THE LASH AND STAIN OF POPULAR
DISFAVOR. YET IN ALL IN TURN HAVE CONQUERED THE PREJUDICED
AND HATE OF THEIR SURROUNDINGS. BY THESE
EXCEPTIONS PROVE THE RULE. MAYBE THE INDIFFERENCE
AND HOSTILITY TOWARDS LUTHER STEM FROM ENGLISH AND AMERICAN
PRESIDENTS IN FAVOR OF THEIR OWN COMMON CULTURE AND POLITICAL HISTORY. PERHAPS IT
WAS THE SHEER STRANGENESS OF GERMANS AND LUTHERANS THAT
REPELLED LATER WRITERS AND GOVERNMENT, LAW AND RIGHTS.
WHATEVER THE REASON, MOST WRITERS I HAVE EXAMINED JUDGED HIM UNFAVORABLY. A FEW PORTRAYED
HIM AS AN UNWITTING CATALYST FOR LIBERTY. MOST HAVE CONDEMNED
HIM AS AN INTOLERANT AND REPRESSIVE NO
BETTER THAN THE POPE AND EMPEROR HE DEFIED. GIVEN THE
LIMITATIONS OF TIME, IF YOU EXAMPLE SUFFICE FROM SOME OF THE
VOLUMES LOANED BY THE TRUST. TOM PAINE ONE OF THE
MOST FAMILIAR PEOPLE TO THE AUDIENCE, THE AUTHOR OF COMMON
SENSE, DID GRUDGINGLY CONCEDE THAT LUTHER HAD BEEN AN
UNWILLING CHAMPION OF SCIENCE. TO TOM PAINE THAT WAS A GOOD
THING. SINCE LUTHER CHALLENGED ROME. BUT TO HIM THE REFORMATION
CONTINUED THE EVILS OF HE SAW THEM, OF ORGANIZED RELIGION, QUOTE, THE EVENT THAT
SERVE MORE THAN ANY OTHER TO BREAK THE LINK IN THIS LONG
CHAIN OF DESPOTIC IGNORANCE, IS THAT
KNOWN BY THE NAME OF THE REFORMATION BY LUTHER. BUT THAT
TIME THE SCIENTIST AGAIN TO REVIVE AND LIBERALITY THEIR NATURAL
ASSOCIATE BEGIN TO APPEAR. THIS WAS THE ONLY PUBLIC GOOD THE
REFORMATION DID. WITH RESPECT TO RELIGIOUS GOOD, IT MIGHT AS
WELL HAVE NOT PLACE. THE MYTHOLOGY, BY THAT HE MEANS
CHRISTIANITY, CONTINUED THE SAME AND THEY NATIONAL POPES GREW
OUT OF THE DOWNFALL OF THE POPE OF CHRISTENDOM. ONE WOULD BE
HARD-PRESSED TO FIND A BETTER EXAMPLE OF DAMNING WITH FAINT
PRAISE. OTHER WRITERS LEAVE AND MORE OPEN ANALYSIS. TO THEM
LOOSELY REPLACED OTHER ENTRANCES WITH HIS OWN CONSIDER JOHN
MARK, QUOTE, PROVIDENCE 03 WITH CATHOLICS THIS SCHISM
WERE INTOLERABLE BUT WHAT CANDID ORTHODOXY NOT PART OF THE ALPS
ONCE STOOD. THERE WAS NO INTRINSIC CONNECTION BETWEEN
RELIGIOUS FREEDOM AND THE ADVENT OF PROTESTANTISM. LUTHER WAS FEROCIOUS AGAINST THE
ANABAPTIST PULLING DOWN THE WRATH OF THE GERMAN PRINCES UPON
THEM. AT GENEVA, CALVIN SURVEYED FOR
HERESY AND IN ENGLAND THE REGIME OF ELIZABETH IN THE EARLY
STEWARDS DROVE RELIGIOUS NONCONFORMANCE TO FLEE TO THE NETHERLANDS. SEVERAL DECADES
LATER THE ENGLISH WRITER GORDON, ONE OF THE WRITERS OF
CATO’S LETTERS TO THOSE GOING THAT’S GOING, QUOTE,
NOR DOES IT AVAIL IF MEN ARE TO BE PERSECUTED AND OPPRESSED FOR
THEIR CONSCIENCE, WHETHER THEY SUFFER FROM THE TYRANNY OF THE

CONSERVATIVE. WHICH IS APPARENTLY A BAD THING. THE LUTHERAN STATES BECAME THE
STRONGHOLD OF RIGID IMMOBILITY AND LUTHERAN WRITERS CONSTANTLY
CONDEMNED THE DEMOCRATIC LITERATURE THAT AROSE IN THE
SECOND AGE OF THE REFORMATION. FOR THOSE WITH — THE SWIFT
REFORMERS WERE BOLDER THAN THE GERMANS IN MIXING UP THEIR CAUSE
WITH POLITICS. GENEVA AND ZÜRICH WERE REPUBLICS AND THE
