Wells Fargo customers find fraudulent Amazon charges on their debit cards

WHEN YOU NEED HELP, SHE’S ON YOUR SIDE. BETTER CALL BEHNKEN. IT IS A SCAM EFFECTING MORE THAN 100 WELLS FARGO CUSTOMERS IN VIRGINIA AND APPEARS TO HAVE HIT A ST. PETERSBURG WOMAN. SHE DISCOVERED A MYSTERIOUS AMAZON CHARGE ON HER DEBIT CARD. HER BANK SAID IT WAS AN AMAZON MEMBER FEE. THING IS SHE’S NOT A MEMBER. IT IS ODD. Reporter: I’VE BEEN LOOK INTO IT ALL DAY. IT’S STRIKINGLY SIMILAR TO WHAT HAPPENED TO A BUNCH OF CUSTOMERS IN VIRGINIA ALL SUMMER. WELLS FARGO CUSTOMERS TELL ME THEY — WELLS FARGO TELLS THEY ME TOOK CARE OF IT. SHE WAS SHOPPING WHEN SHE DECIDED TO CHECK HER BANK ACCOUNT. I CHECKED MY BALANCE AND I SEE AMAZON. AMAZON? THIS IS NOT RIGHT. Reporter: THERE WAS A MYSTERIOUS CHARGE FOR $14.06. SHE CALLED HER BANK, WELLS FARGO. I SAYS WHAT’S THIS CHARGE FOR. THEY SAYS AMAZON. I SAID I SEE THAT, BUT WHY. THEY SAID BECAUSE YOUR MEMBERSHIP FEE. I SAID I DON’T HAVE A MEMBERSHIP FEE. Reporter: THE BANK OFFERED TO SEND HER A NEW CARD, BUT IT WOULD TAKE DAYS. I SAYS CAN I GO WITHDRAW MY MONEY RIGHT NOW? TELL YOU HOW MUCH I’M GOING TO WITHDRAW SO I CAN HAVE SOME CASH FOR THE WEEKEND? NO. Reporter: WHAT HAPPENED TO DARLENE MIRRORS REPORTS FROM VIRGINIA OVER THE SUMMER. MORE THAN 100 CUSTOMERS IN NORFOLK AND RICHMOND COMPLAINED OF AMAZON CHARGES ON THEIR WELLS FARGO ACCOUNTS. MOST OF THE CHARGES WERE AROUND $14 AND FOR SOME IT ADDED UP TO HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS. IN DARLENE’S CASE, SHE THOUGHT HER PROBLEM WAS FIXED, BUT NOT SO FAST. LAST NIGHT, I CHECKED MY BALANCE AND IT WAS STILL BEING PENDING AND UNDER MY OLD ACCOUNT NUMBER. TODAY, I JUST CHECKED MY BALANCE AND IT’S POSTED. THEY DIDN’T BLOCK IT, STOP IT AND IT’S ON THE NEW ACCOUNT. Reporter: THAT’S WHY SHE KNEW SHE BETTER CALL BEHNKEN AND I WENT TO WORK CALLING WELLS FARGO AND AMAZON. A BANK SPOKESWOMAN TOLD ME THE PROBLEM IN VIRGINIA WAS TAKEN CARE OF AND THEY’LL REACH OUT TO DARLENE. YOU WANT YOUR MONEY BACK? I DO. Reporter: YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE IT DOESN’T HAPPEN AGAIN? ABSOLUTELY. Reporter: IT’S STILL NOT CLEAR HOW THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED IN VIRGINIA AND HOW IT HAPPENED TO DARLENE’S ACCOUNT. SPOKESPEOPLE TOLD ME THEY’RE LOOKING INTO THE SITUATION. $14 IS NOT THAT MUCH, BUT IF THEY DO IT ALL OVER THE PLACE, THEY ARE RIPPING PEOPLE OFF. DID IT HAPPEN ANY WHERE ELSE IN FLORIDA? WELLS FARGO TELLS ME THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THEY’VE HEARD OF ANYBODY IN FLORIDA COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS. I PUT IT ON MY FACEBOOK PAGE
